Re: Quick question about 40 GB PS3...

No, that was back when it was $600 and people were complaining that it cost too much. They cut costs, and now people are still complaining. If you're that hung up on backwards compatibility, the 80GB Bundle is a much better deal. $100 more for +40GB on the HDD, 80-90% backwards compatibility, and MotorStorm.

Amazon is having a sale currently on their BD stock. About 220 titles are 50-60% off. I bought the Dragonball Z Brolly Double Feature for $13.99, Pirates At World's End for $19.99, and the Spider-Man Trilogy for $45.

Also, just pick up an HDMI cable on eBay or something for 5 bucks.

Re: Quick question about 40 GB PS3...

Some impressions since this is my own thread:

Uncharted is awesome, as expected. If you own a PS3 and looked over this game, you suck, seriously. The voice acting is of the same caliber as was in Mass Effect... professionally done, well executed, and it feels like an interactive movie.

The XMB interface is hit and miss with me. I definitely prefer the 360's blades. The PS3's interface looks more high tech, but it looks sterile and uninspired. I like the fact that I have a lot more control over various settings, and I love some of the extra features that the 360 is lacking such as crossfading for music playback and decent upscaling for DVDs, but the 360s blades are much more streamlined and visually pleasing.

The PS3 will probably stay on 24/7 much like my PC and iMac to contribute yet more to Folding@Home, so it's nice that it kicks on automatically if you set it to do so.

Unfortunately, they have no plans on releasing the 80GB version in Europe. They released a limited number of 60GB ones which sold almost instantly and now only deliver the 40GB one with 2 less USB ports, no LAN cable, and no backwards compatibility.

Ah yes, Europe gets screwed by SCEE's terrible decisions. Japan now too. My apologies.

Thankfully, Europe gets an awesome 40GB bundle right now, so maybe that'll make up for it, until the inevitable launch of a new high-end SKU.

Yeah, I'm jealous of Europe's 2 free games deal. I'd have loved to have gotten Uncharted and Ratchet & Clank for free.

I still plan on buying a PS3 but I think I'll wait a while longer and see if they review their decision on only delivering the 40GB model. I've heard rumours of the 80GB or some new larger model making it over here but, to be honest, if I can upgrade the HD myself anyway I'm only really interested in the USB ports and the backwards compatibility. There are a number of PS2 games I'd love to play again for nostalgia's sake.

You can customize the PS3's XMB using Themes. There are a few downloadable directly from the PlayStation Store, and a bunch of 3rd party ones (Sony has released a tool that lets you make your own themes).

Re: Quick question about 40 GB PS3...

I have the Uncharted theme, and it's a lot nicer... but it still falls flat in comparison to the dashboard IMO, it's just not as visually pleasing and streamlined. It's like the difference between Windows XP and OSX, to me. Yeah, I know... I just compared the 360's dashboard to an Apple product which is kinda scary. The PSN Store needs some serious work too. It's definitely better than the Wii store though... sheesh, Nintendo.

Yet another issue... I've grown used to the 360 and Wii controllers shutting off on their own after a period of inactivity. The PS3's does not. Not cool. I hope they add this feature in a future firmware update.

On the positive side, the PS3 is going to make my Folding@Home score go up a lot more! Since it isn't a miniature volcano like the 360, I've already got it running 24/7 and it'll be folding at all times when I'm not playing games or watching a movie much like my computers. Oh and, Super Stardust HD is probably the fanciest arcade type title on any of the three platforms right now, for certain.

I actually like the XMB much better than the 360's text blades. It's much more intuitive and less on-screen clutter.

On this we agree. We know the PS3 can shut off controllers remotely (when it powers off), so why not have this happen when the screensaver kicks in?

That's true for the 40GB. My 60GB puts out almost as much heat as a 360, though it's much, much quieter.

My only gripe so far... even the new 40 GB PS3s still don't come with any HD cables, or even an ethernet cable. Ended up using the ones that came with my 360 Elite since I already had an Ethernet cable for it, and I have the 360 hooked up via VGA. There's something funny about having an HDMI cable with "Microsoft" printed on the plug connected to the back of the PS3.
At any rate, I guess I need to file for the five free Blu-Ray movies. Even though I am none too pleased with the movie industry and their stupid format war, free movies are free movies. I do plan on using the PS3 for all my movie playback though. It's pretty much fact that the 360 doesn't upscale DVDs nearly as well. Should be good times.
                        Uncharted was a good choice! And Okami for $20 is awesome, around here you can't find it for that price and most places don't even have any used or new. ; ;
When the PS2 came out and it played DVD's, I thought I as going to eliminate my DVD player. WRONG! Ended up playing most of my DVD's in my DVD player which irritated me. Then when the PS3 came out I thought it would probably suck as a movie player too. WRONG! Now the only thing my DVD player does is plays my anime off the USB. Even DVD's look FABULOUS with the right cables and a nice LCD. Now with the update for the PS3, I can get rid of my USB DVD player because the PS3 plays my anime now too!
The backwards compatibility issue really ticks me off. In an interview a high ranking Sony official (CEO, I believe) said straight out that it was to make people pay more attention to the PS3 and PS3 games instead of playing PS2....more money in their pocket that way. Greed makes the world go 'round.

I was just wondering about the backwards compatability b/c if I did get a PS3, I'd like to play FFXI on it. I've been playing on PC though, but it's usually occupied by someone else so PS3 seemed like a good way to have something that's "mine".

FFXI works on the PS3 (60GB/20GB/80GB...not the 40GB though... yet). You just need to download the HDD compatibility settings from the PlayStation store, and all the discs should install without any trouble.

Keep in mind that you can't install The Vana'diel Collection 2008 on the PS3 unless you have an install of PlayOnline Viewer from any of the previous discs, not including Wings of the Goddess. The backwards compatibility hasn't been updated as yet to prompt a partitioning of the PS3 HDD for use with FFXI on the two new discs.

As for backwards compatibility, it seems Sony is still interested in making it work properly. They're currently hiring positions to improve the status of backwards compatibility for all platforms on both the PS3 and their next-generation console. (And for those of you who are shocked and will certainly find this as a reason to chastise Sony for working on their next platform already, keep in mind that they started talking about plans to implement CELL in the PS3 as early as 2001).
