Hypothetically speaking, if there were a member of the opposition party who professed similar ideas would you vote for him?

Now per se that you are Anti-Widget.

and then say that the only issue that the two candidates differ on is Widgets and both candidates vote in the exact opposite way that their respective party votes with respect to Widgets.

The opposition party is Pro-Widget, and your party is Anti-Widget.

    Who do you vote for?

There is no reason a direct democracy would result in more stupid people voting.

Unless you're trying to say that congress is smarter than most people, in which case you should do stand-up.

George Washington warned against parties. Fact.

From this, we can deduce he was a Red Mage.

Is the Anti-Widget candidate (who actually is Pro-Widget) also Pro-Cobalt? How about Anti-Pistachio? Anti-Jingle Ball? Unless I'm voting for the Commisioner of Widgets, I wouldn't base my vote by the stance on a single issue.

Now, if you want to argue that Anti-Widget vs Pro-Widget is the single biggest issue facing all of America, and polarizes everything... why on earth is someone who is Pro-Widget a part of the Anti-Widget party while someone is Anti-Widget is part of the Pro-Widget party? If Widgets truly are the most important issue, this whole hypothetical situation doesn't jive.

Ignorant is the majority of ppl. They only see the hear and now.
Kind of like the Observants from Danny Phantom(See The Ultimate Enemy for details), while the un-ignorant ppl, and febas, are like Clockwork.

You're dodging the question. If you will note, Feba has bolded the important part in his post above. I said that it's the only difference. Therefore if one is Anti-Pistachio, so is the other ad nauseam. I also did not give weight to the issue. It can be assumed that the issue is whatever you would consider the absolute "Medium" importance.

Also, if you're that concerned about hypothetical issues, I'm sure I can dig up candidates from two different parties who stand opposite each other on a given issue and make it a realistic situation instead--whichever you prefer. The use of a hypothetical is my attempt to remove any specific bias from the judgment.

Thank you for the clarification. In that case, I would vote for the Pro-Widget candidate who represents the Anti-Widget party. No elected official is an island. Power is very distributed, and elected officials only stray from their party's platform as an exception, not as a rule.

If I was a "single issue voter", and Anti-Widget was that single issue, then I might vote for Mr. Anti-Widget. But I'm not. And I think it's unrealistic to expect someone to act like they're a member of the Anti-Widget party while actually being a member of the Pro-Widget party once they are elected to office.
