  • If you wanted to bitch about an update

This is the type of update to bitch about.

    http://games.slashdot.org/article.pl.../12/06/1312254

CCP's latest major patch to the EVE-Online client, Trinity, comes with an optional DX9-enhanced graphics patch that dramatically improves the visual quality of the in-game graphics ... It also has an unfortunate bug: the incredibly stupid choice of boot.ini as a game configuration file, coupled with an errant extra backslash in the installer configuration. The result is that anyone who installs the enhanced graphics patch overwrites the windows XP c:\boot.ini file with the EVE client configuration file, bricking the machine on the next boot
Obviously the machine is not unrecoverable and therefore not 'bricked.' Unfortunately most users won't know how to recover the machine.

This isn't the first time things like this has happened as was pointed out FFXI at one time tried to remove the XP hal.

However, these are the types of updates to complain about.

Also, Eve players running the new client, don't uninstall it just yet.
I use a Mac because I'm just better than you are.

        Dizzamn for them.

On top of that, I bet they released the update during EU prime time too!

Re: If you wanted to bitch about an update

I was one of the victims of the boot.ini removal lol.

At one time last night, EVE almost crashed, and I was going to re-boot my computer. Good thing I didn't. I was running EVE & FFXI both at the same time.

I fixed the boot.ini wrote a boot loader boot.ini file, and put it in, fixed it fine. It boots up normally.

I had to do the same thing to my bro's computer as well.

Man, this is kinda scary stuff, especially if it's to a newbie user. What if they didn't know and it prevented a boot up on it. They'd have to take it in to best buys or circuit city not knowing what it was.

This was indeed a bad QA and Testing on CCP's fault.

The only users that were unaffected were:
          Windows Vista
          Mac
          Linux

Well that's like what... 5% of the eve players? lol

It's definitely feasible to see how it could have slipped testing. Restarting your computer is generally not something you consider when installing a videogame, and it probably wasn't on any kind of checklist.

The real error was naming the file bootup.ini in the first place. We're almost unlimited in the number of ways we can name a file, and they chose to name it the same as an important pre-Windows-Vista-era bootup file?

CCP actually gave a good explanation of why and how it happened:
