What do you think is next for Nintendo portables? (DS2?)

Nintendo released the Game Boy in 89.
Seven years later, they released the Game Boy Pocket.
Two years later, they released the Game Boy Color.
Three years later, Game Boy Advance.
Two years later, Game Boy Advance SP
Two years after that, the Game Boy Micro.
The DS was out by then, too. One year after the Game Boy Micro, Nintendo released the DS lite.

It's been about two years since then, so it's really not too far out of the question that Nintendo will announce a new portable soon, although it will probably just be another version of the DS.

There is but that's purely fan art. Food for thought though.


What do you think Nintendo will bring in their next generation? Just an improved DS (and what could they improve?), or an entirely new machine?

I always love the ingenuity of people and how talented they are to make stuff like that! While its very cool, I don't think its very practical.

How long till they remake the DS? I say something will be out by next Xmas. Now it just may be a tweaked version and not an entire remake. Kind of like when they did the backlighting for the GB. An entirely new innovative system? I think that will be a while because this one is still HOT HOT HOT!

I'd say a new DS model is likely in 2009. Next year a new DS Lite will be released in Japan, but the only difference will be a built-in 1seg tuner. Nintendo's probably planning the next major overhaul for the system as we speak which'll breathe another few years of life into its healthy sales.

Oh, so the 1-seg is going to be built in? I thought they were just releasing it as a cart.

Will the antenna be built into the DS too then?


Either way, TV broadcast would be a helluva lot better than Pictochat for built in software.

I'm kinda thinking that Nintendo could rerelease the Wii and DS with practically no changes but upgraded graphics, and make them otherwise about the same, and do pretty well, If they did it in 2009, they could keep things cheap, not piss off their customers too much, and still get some much better looking graphics. Then again, the Wii still probably has a lot of edge pushing to do-- compare the early PS2 ones to God of War and such.

If anything, I think it's pretty obvious that the next Nintendo handheld will probably feature a Handheld Virtual Console, with GB, GBC and GBA games for download.

That would be pretty sweet, but that would require more onboard storage. Not that even 4GB is expensive nowadays (why the Wii only has 512MB integrated is beyond me)

512MB would be far more than enough for a Gameboy VC. Think about how little space GameBoy games must need.

What I will never guess is how Nintendo is going to top themselves in the console department, rather than the handheld one.

I suppose we won't even have another hint as to such for at least four years, though . . .

I'd offer speculation, but I suck pretty bad at it. Wouldn't surprise me to see a re-made DS in 2009 like Pai Pai Master said though.

You have no idea how badly I'd love to see Virtual Boy done in a discreet frame (so you can wear it on the go) and with modern graphics.
