  • Hollywood finally clues in

    http://www.joystiq.com/2007/10/16/ar...halo-3s-fault/

They are, according to top executives in the film industry. Ticket sales for the first week of October are at their lowest since 1999, and the industry is worried that those dang video games might have something to do with it.

Advertising Age reports that ticket sales were down 27% from last year, and that the likely suspect is the recently-released Halo 3, with over $300 million in sales and countless hours of multiplayer mayhem keeping potential movie-goers strapped to their couches. Now, in a wholly different way, video games are on the radar of the film industry, as studios begin to sweat the unforeseen competition. Oh, for the days when piracy was the only concern!

No they didn't clue in to anything. Sales are down because they keep pumping out craptastic movies that no one in their right mind will pay $11 per person to see.

This argument has been trotted out every year since at least 2000.

Give it to Zack Snyder. What he did for "300," he can do for "Halo."

Well, as a movie, Spirits Within wasn't bad. It just wasn't Final Fantasy. Other then that, and the first Mortal Kombat, you seemed to have named *the* worst game movies evar. Like, in the history of movies ever. Hell, they were just bad movies period, video game based on not.

Also, as a complete game geek and someone who's rather anti-social, I have *never* said "I'd rather stay home and play games then watch a movie I want to see". Long story short, games aren't stealing movie viewers, crappy movies are stopping movie goers from actually *going* to the movies. So if you want people to go to the movies Hollywood, STOP MAKING CRAP MOVIES.

It's only going to get worse if the Writers' Guild goes on strike.

And for the record, Silent Hill was a halfway decent movie, even if it was weird as all hell.

I would say the Silent Hill was NOT good and Resident Evil 1 was acceptable. While, Resident Evil 2 was horse shit.

Halo + Final Fantasy = Spirits Within?

Both those movies were pretty cool.

Spirits Within was bad. Shooting things that can't die? That takes all the fun out of it.

Theres nothign worth watching until Avatar comes to theartres. If they think Halo will be their problem, just think when spore is released....

                          Re: Hollywood finally clues in

I can see it now, Halo: The Movie starring The Rock as Master Chief. Much hilarity ensues... ^^

Actually, it's a shame video game based movies are usually such crap. There's so many games out there that would translate well to the big screen. I'd give anything to see a kick ass Castlevania film, or something based on the Metroid franchise.

I read a thread on the imdb years ago about how kick ass it would be if they made a good Legend of Zelda movie. One of the poster's recommended Michael Clark Duncan (from The Green Mile) as Gannon, and I was like "Holy Crap, that'd be perfect". He's got the voice for it, and I think he'd pull it off well (I haven't played the newer LoZ games, so they may have changed his character in the later games to where he wouldn't fit...but for the NES/SNES era he'd be perfect)

Anyways, getting back to the original point, movie takes have been sucking lately because, well, movies have been sucking lately. I used to go to the movies constantly, but at $20 a pop (when you factor in the $7 popcorn and $5 drink) I have to really really REALLY want to see something before I'll just let it wait until the DVD comes out.

Plus, they gotta factor in that a lot more people are getting into the HDTV/Surround Sound market, and for a lot of peeps (like my mom, for instance) they'd rather just wait and watch it in the comfort of their own living room, and not have to listen to people talking/snoring/doing god knows what in the seats behind them. The turnaround between the theater and dvd release is like weeks now, so it ain't like you're waiting forever anymore...
I'm a slow motion accident, lost in coffee rings and fingerprints...

You mean he'll just turn it into an annoying series of cliches people will shout in MMORPG raids and FPS clan wars?

We don't need more help with that, we already had Leeroy Jenkins.

If it becomes an annoying series of cliches that people will shout in MMORPG raids and FPS clan wars(and in real life, too), that means that, at the least, he did his job, and made something that caught peoples' attentions.

At the most, it means he created something that was fuckin' good. "300" was fuckin' good.
