  • Have you ever bought hardware for a 'killer app'?

Have you ever bought something, be it a game console, PC, or other things of that sort for a *single* software app, specifically games?
Personally, the only time I bought a console for a single game was Xbox, for Shenmue II.

I finally got a PS2 because they stopped making NCAA Football for the Gamecube. I would have gotten one eventually anyway, but that was the trigger.

Well technically yes, as I bought a Gamecube just to play Resident Evil remake and Zero. However I only bought it because it was so cheap at the time (along with the games), all new on a clearance sale.

But other than that no, not really.

Nintendo DS once I heard of Pokémon Diamond and Pearl.

I never regret my decision ever since.

An Xbox for Halo - I was getting utterly thrashed in the res. hall matches and needed to get more play time in (not to mention a bigger screen).

Xbox, for True Fantasy Live Online. Game got scrapped, I was pissed. Xbox was sold to a friend.

                That's about it.

                  GBC for Zelda DX.

Might get an Xbox 360 for like 2 games. I hate microsoft so much... but those games are so nice!

Re: Have you ever bought hardware for a 'killer app'?

More or less; I ended up spending about $600 building Meredith (new desktop) when Emily (previous desktop) was only 6 months old. Combination of a tempting Fry's sale and annoyance with some visual effects lag on Emily. In this case, the "killer app" was FFXI, which is also the only reason I have Windows 2000 installed at all (GNU/Linux preferred, self-constructed).

Got some of that money back selling Emily to a friend, anyway.

As far as consoles, all of my console purchases have been predicated on a small handful of titles I was interested in at the time:
SNES: Sorry to say, Super Mario World and Super Mario All-Stars. This was very early on and I'd yet to encounter a single RPG.
                    Playstation: FFVII and Xenogears
Sega Genesis+Sega CD: Lunar: The Silver Star and Lunar: Eternal Blue
Sega Dreamcast: Sonic Adventure, though in retrospect Grandia II is what made it worthwhile. A GNU/Linux port also factored in, though I have yet to get the Ethernet adapter which would make messing with that worthwhile.
Playstation II: FFX and Kingdom Hearts -- mostly FFX
Game Boy: Pretty much the primary exception, by the time I got around to buying one there were a LOT of titles I was interested in. Because so many backward-compatible systems had been released, I picked this up used for $5 from a record store.
Game Boy Advance: Final Fantasy Tactics Advance and Sword of Mana

Note that except for the SNES, I bought all of said consoles used and well after their initial release, so in some cases buying for 1-2 games wasn't such a terrible proposition. Dreamcast in particular only cost me $40, including keyboard IIRC. GBA cost me $25 from a pawn shop.

I bought a GBC for Pokemon Red. I'm going to buy a PSP for FFT, but while I'm at it I'll also get Maverick Hunter X and Lumines (it's still for FFT though, the other two games put together wouldn't be enough to sway me otherwise.) I'm going to get a Wii for Brawl.

The last console I bought at the peak of it's popularity was the SNES, so I'd have to say no. And I've only had a home PC for a few years (I got it for work, and gaming just kind of happened).

As of right now, I'd say no... but I am very much so tempted to buy a PS3 or a 360 just for the new Gundam - Dynasty Warriors Game... that game is soooooo awesome... When I play it on the PS3 in the stores it's just so much fun that by the time I leave my neck is sore from staring up at the screen that for some reason is mounted 9 feet off the floor... -_-

My personal policy is usually that if the system doesn't have at least five games I want, the system is not worth having.

So PS3 has a looooooong way to go. Problem is PS3 is so expensive, even if I did have 5 games I wanted I still wouldn't buy one. I mean, its kinda sad that Metal Gear and Final Fantasy can't motivate me even to want one slightly.

PSP I want now that is really picking up on the RPGs. Took two years, but it finally cleared my standard rule.
