480p Insider videos..."borrowed"...from IGN.

Advance Wars, Metroid and Drill Dozer assist trophies confirmed.

Norphair confirmed as a new Metroid stage.

Rumours abound that Luigi is getting cut; his outfit included as an alt. costume for Mario. This was the case in the original Smash Bros. however, and Luigi was still present, so it may not be true.

They've also brought back character intro animations from the original game.

MetaKnight's Final Smash is a one-hit kill. He and Sonic are looking like top-tier characters at this point, unless there's more balancing to be done.

Also confirmed: GAME OF THE FOREVER.

Re: Sonic Confirmed for Brawl, Remaining Nerds Explode

I for one am glad they delayed the game. There's too many good games coming within a small timeframe this holiday season as it is, and as an added bonus, they get to do more tweaking to make it perfect when it ships.

My wallet thanks Nintendo. December, January, February, March... it's all the same to me. No matter when it ships, Game of the Year for certain.

With all the variety in characters I think it's waaaay too early to start making tier calls lol. Ike outranges the both of them something fierce and should have a big weight advantage over them as well. Snake, ZS Samus, Sheik, Ganon, Link, and Peach all have big range and weight advantages over them as well.

I'm quite pleased with this though. The tiers are going to get shaken up something fierce with the variety of characters that're available in this version. Plus, Kirby and Yoshi are getting the improvements they so desperately needed. The biggest question on my mind right now is: will Falco make the cut? He plays completely different from Fox and performs better against different characters than Fox, but he's still a big clone, having the exact same animations for all his attacks.
Honestly it was probably delayed so they could make the best game ever even better.

With the amount of hype this game is getting, they most likely decided to hold it back a few more months and add even more content.
I'm betting on this too. They're putting a lot of effort into this game - the list of composers is ridiculous, and they're giving us an entire Kirby Superstar-styled single-player mode in addition to all the multiplayer goodness any fighting game has to offer. Let them take as long as they need. Better that than them having to cut corners on a masterpiece of a game.

EDIT: Now that I'm back home and have good internet, finally saw that Haloid video. Awesome stuff. I'm pretty sure Samus doesn't have rocket boots and that's supposed to be a whip, not a lightsaber, but I'll forgive them. Also, 'd when All the World in just One Girl played at the end.

That may be the case, but IGN's impressions of the game state that matches were pretty well rounded until someone had to go and choose MetaKnight, who won the remaining 4 rounds with 0 KO's. Either MetaKnight is extremely easy to learn (the new Link?) and people just aren't used to his unique playstyle, or he's practically broken at this point.

Hopefully there'll be more balances in the future, since the game is (at least now) still pretty far off.

From what I've read, its a 1-hit KO, but the range is much smaller than other's Final Smashes, so it'll be harder to execute (like Roy's fully charged 1-hit KO in SSBM)

Also Zero-Suit Samus's Final Smash turns her back into powersuit Samus (plus attacks obviously)

Sonic's is super sonic (dur really?) Flys around, touching opponent deals massive damage to them.

Straight from 1-up about Peach's Final Smash:

Princess Peach has a large screen-filling one that starts off with two mirror images of her showing up on the right and left sides, blowing a kiss of rose petals, followed by round, fuzzy peaches raining from the sky, effectively wiping out everything in sight.
Bummed about not getting to blow my winter break playing it with my friends, but from all the new vids, it will so be worth the extra 2 months (*twitch*)

I know this isn't too relevant to the casual gamer but from in those two IGN videos, the players were being pretty scrubbish. I saw a fair bit of smash attack spamming, and hardly any short-hopping, wavedashing, dashdancing, or other advanced techniques. And free-for-alls are not very conducive to balanced play either. For standard competitive play, Smash is played 1v1 or 2v2 (with Friendly Fire on.) Some characters are far better to be opportunistic or cowardly with in a free-for-all than in a 1v1 match.

There's always some characters that are more intuitive and easy to play than others. Take Peach for example. A noob player using Peach has a huge advantage over other noob players using a big portion of the other characters because noob players don't know advanced techniques to avoid falling prey to Peach's down smash spamming, and also have a very difficult time killing her due to her recovery. Yet the three top tier characters are Sheik, Fox, and Marth. Fox in particular has a very steep learning curve compared to the others, but in the hands of a skilled player he's very deadly (Sheik and Marth are also very deadly but require less skill for the same performance. Ease of play isn't always indicative of top-tierness.

Like I said, I know this isn't too relevant to the casual gamer that just wants to play Smash for fun (undoubtedly the vast majority of the population, as well as the majority of the posters here I'd bet.) It's possible that Meta Knight is just a very easy character to play. Or he could be broken. But if all we have are IGN test player's testimonies, we don't have much to really pass judgement yet.

I know this'll probably come off like I'm chewing you out or that I'm holier-than-thou, but it's nothing of the sort. Just my honest opinion.

/rantoff

EDIT: Since I probably just killed this thread with my little rant, I figured I'd illustrate my point. This is a video of me (B4K4) and a good friend of mine (EV1L) playing against each other in a tournament about 2 years back. Fox and Falco play very differently when you use advanced techs (especially Falco, who becomes a laser-camping little whore ;o). And bear in mind that while we were decent at the time, that kind of gameplay is still noobish by today's standards.

LOL at Peach's Final Smash. That's great.

AND OMG DID THEY MAKE FOX FALL SLOWER?

P.S. Don't feel bad, Smash is a game you can't be really good at without going into forums and reading up on game mechanics and advanced techs. Every player that's good starts out that way.

Re: Sonic Confirmed for Brawl, Remaining Nerds Explode

Captain Falcon isn't confirmed yet but we all know he's going to be in. Don't need to know it's confirmed to know it's got a 99% chance of being in the game.

But that's not my reasoning for it. They interviewed the guy that does the art for Twilight Princess and he confirmed he's working with the Smash developers for Ganon and Sheik.

I.do.not.speculate.randomly.I.didn't.even.think.Sonic.would.be.in. (And that doesn't change my argument either. Small characters have a hard time against rangemonger characters.)

Give me a few and maybe I'll be able to dig up the link.

Aonuma: I’ve been working with Sakurai for a very long time with this new Smash Bros., because the Wii came out and when discussion for a new Smash Bros. took place nobody could think of anyone other than Sakurai working on it. He was kind of the default, and I was very happy to hear that he would be working on it. Actually, my designers did work on the designs for Sheik and Link and Ganondorf. So they submitted the initial designs, and so it would fit in the Smash Bros. Brawl environment, they’ve had to tweak some of the designs. But Sakurai has brought those altered designs to NCL. We’re working very closely with the team of Smash Bros. Brawl to make sure the characters look their best.

So far only characters that sucked in the first place (Pichu, G&W, Mewtwo, Y.Link) or were very strictly clones (Dr. Mario, which has had his forward air integrated into Mario's) seem to have been cut. Marth and Roy probably didn't make the cut but we got Ike in return (Roy was a total failure as a character, and Marth was sorta broken.) Sheik doesn't have a direct equivalent, is a top tier character and is widely used so I can't imagine them randomly removing her. What I do expect is that they'll separate her from Zelda.

Armando, we both know what happened with that last Smash Bros. article you cited. But, even if this one is real (and refering to Brawl at the same time), I'm still having serious doubts about Shiek.

She was top tier, as you said, to the point where she stole the spotlight from her real self. To be perfectly honest, I think that's all the reason in the world to remove her: that, and the more obvious Twilight Princess ensamble.

And having Shiek as a different character entirely? You know they are the same person, right? That argument would hold more water if you even nominated Zelda's Ocarina of Time Shiekra bodyguard as a playable character (or even just a random Shiekra in general).

My point is, Shiek isn't going to be in Brawl. There's no rational reason to keep her in. I just wish you tourney players would learn to let go. Play a character you like, for once: not one that's broken.

And, Armando, before you say anything: remember what I said about letting go.

I'm not going to comment on tournament play, but I have to agree with this. I know I'll probably be playing Sonic almost full time (apart from clearing the game on every character), or maybe Fox.

I'd say go for the character that has the fighting style you like best, though, not whatever one has the best chance of winning, again outside professional play (some people enjoy that, and that's their right), I enjoy the bouncier, lighter, faster characters (Kirby, Ice Climbers, Fox), so I play them.
