Perhaps from your perspective, which I certainly won't argue against. There's no doubt in my mind that Sony wanted Resistance to justify the purchase of a PS3 for every gamer out there, but I don't recall anyone calling it a killer-app in a Halo-sized sense, or at least not hyping it up enough to call it anything of the sort.

Sony tried that already with Killzone, and we all know what happened with that. Sure, every developer would like their game to be a killer-app, but Insomniac simply aimed to make a solid launch title, and they did just that. In fact, it's among one of the best launch titles I've ever played. Forgive me from making rash assumptions, but I would venture a guess that you haven't played Resistance, so I do have to disagree with your opinion of it as a "bomb." It's an extremely fun and unique game, which is expected of such a talented developer and I highly recommend giving it a try.

PS3's launch price prevented it from having any sort of killer-app from the very start. The only console so far to have a killer-app is the Wii; the 360 and PS3 won't be capable of supporting mass-market sales until they reach a mass-market price point. Despite that, Resistance has sold fantastically well as a launch title for a $600-freakin' dollar videogame console, and continues to do so.

If you wanted to use the quality of the game as a defense, that would be beside the point, but it still wouldn't qualify Resistance. Resistance, according to a quick look at metacritic, got 86% on average, with multiple scores going as low as 60%

Compare that to Ico, the king of "awesomely underappreciated" games -- 90% average, nothing lower than 75%

Compared to other FPS? For recent games, Halo 3 got 94% on average, 70% on the lowest. Metroid Prime 3: Corruption got 90% on average, with only a single 70% as the lowest.

Want to blame those scores on the reviewers being hyped? The original Halo had 97% overall, with the lowest score I see at 80% Metroid Prime is also at 97%, with the lowest score again being 80%.

For good old, classic FPS? Goldeneye on N64? 96%. The lowest is a 78% from Famitsu-- three of their reviewers were 8/10, only one was 7/10. The original Quake got a 94%, with the lowest at 80%

So if you want to defend Resistance for not moving many copies, general quality of the game, according to multiple reviews, also is fairly average. Above average, perhaps, but nowhere near any 'classic' or 'great' game.

Alright well, I can't really do much to change your mind if you're going to bash on a game because of review scores. You do bring up some great games in your argument, but I'm sorry that something as retarded as MetaCritic would prevent you from experiencing some great games.

I didn't call Resistance a classic, but I will continue to argue that it's a great game. Do keep in mind that you have no argument, because you haven't played it and are basing your opinion entirely on reviews. Unless you believe you think exactly the same way about games as every reviewer who claimed it's not worth playing, then you simply can't form an argument against the game out of that.

I'm not bashing it. I'm just saying, it's not a killer app in terms of sales, it's not an amazingly high quality game. It doesn't compare. It might be a decent FPS, but that was exactly the point-- PlayStation has never really had any great FPS, even Nintendo has beat Sony in that department.

Yet Metroid Prime 3 will likely sell less than Resistance in the long run. That certainly doesn't make either of them any better or worse than the other, even if you can't even begin to draw comparisons between the two. They're extremely different in nearly every sense of the genre, even if they are both very good games.

My personal opinion is that sales and reviews have nothing to do with the overall quality of a game. There've been far to many great games to remain under the radar or score terrible reviews, and Madden is the only thing I have to mention for the other side of that argument.

Ya Midway announced that UT3 will indeed be delayed to 2008. What a shame.

One if the things I was looking forward to seeing is that user created mods from the PC would be able to run on the PS3. I like to see them integrate systems more with PC's for more variety for people.

From Mark Rein himself, for clarification on the UT3 issue:

As a public company, Midway felt an obligation to its shareholders to let them know about the possibility of a delay. Our goal is still to get the PS3 version of UT3 in stores before the end of 2007. However, we will only ship it once it’s ready and is the best game we can deliver.

In addition there is some good news as a little extra time in development means that now the PS3 version will have all of the same maps as the PC version whereas we previously expected to ship a fewer maps on console.

He later responds on the forums that a December release is most likely at this point.

A- you're basing it off personal opinion, while I on the other hand have hard numbers from both regular people's opinions, and professional reviews, as well as the sales. You can call Superman 64 great all you like, but that doesn't make that the case.
B- You have no idea how I pick my games, but suffice to say I don't let numbers pick.
C- Write your entire post before you press submit, attacking people after they've already replied to you = lame
D- FFXIO needs to add an "if you navigate away content will be lost" blahblah popup to these forums, I just lost a good ten minutes of writing and more numbers and I'm pissed.

Considering it's supposed to be a killer app, move systems, so on and so forth, yes, it did bomb.

Comparing a first-game in a franchise to a 3rd game in an already very successful franchise is kinda unfair.

The first Halo took months to reach 1 million games sold and didn't have any competition from other consoles. Resistence arrived at a time where competition was tough but still managed to sell really well for a PS3 FPS.

And at least it helped the already so-behind in sales system to gain some credibility in the FPS department, but I don't think it was ever meant to be a Halo-killer.


Still, Sony really needs to make this offer good if they ever hope on catching up to the competition.

Naturally the most unbiased (something I think you're not and I know I'm not, but that's good) discussion would come from two people who have both experienced the game fully and consider the credit reviews and sales have on the perception of a game, which I won't deny the existence of. However, that would make it much less interesting. I do apologize if you feel I was attacking you directly Feba, as that certainly wasn't my intention. I'm glad we can disagree with eachother on some points, but still agree on others (For example, Corruption is awesome, and Superman 64 is one of the worst abominations in the history of gaming).

And sorry if my posting style annoys you. It's how I avoid the problem you're also facing. I'll check with the admins to see if it's possible to get some sort of warning popup while attempting to close a window while in the process of posting a message.

The only technical difficulty for running user made mods should be distributing the mod to PS3's. I can't really think of anything else unless there was a PS3 edition that ships without a HDD. I don't think there is, but I may only be paying attention to what I would buy.

But that aside, I liked Resistance. The story was actually pretty interesting as far as FPSes go. I'm sure they wanted to mix WW2 with Aliens and high-Tech technology.

That whole "Steam-Punk"esque genre of the 40s being the golden age of technological innovation really interests me. Something similar to Bioshock's projected time period?

It's my understanding that Epic is setting up an online portal in the game menu for downloading PS3-compatible mods, similar to Resistance. In addition, top mods will be available for download on the PS Store, and you can also transfer them directly from PC via USB drive, PSP, memory cards, or external HDD.

Resistance wasn't anywhere near as deep as Bioshock (at least, as far as we can tell from the first game in the series), but I am definitely a sucker for alternate-history stories, particularly in the cliched WWII-era FPS. Insomniac did a teriffic job of blending the two together in a believeable, yet stylized, manner. The story itself wasn't as developed as, say, the Ratchet & Clank games, but I'll give them the benefit of the doubt to improve on that in subsequent sequels.

In the end, the potential delay isn't getting me too down. UT3 on PS3 is destined to become one of my single-most expensive game releases in a while. I'll be buying a bluetooth keyboard/mouse combo and an external HDD just to pack full of mods, so I could use the extra time to save up for it. XD
