Here comes Sony's next attempt to right their wrongs; the "Core" PS3 model will be retuning this month after the murder of the launch-period 20GB unit. Many despised the move as it was, obviously, a cheaper solution to the expensive standard unit.
Many reports are coming in worldwide that a new SKU will launch this month, and speculation has run for quite some time that it'll hit for a $399 price point, and the attached BestBuy leaked UPC info slip confirms that price point. (Retailers are speculating 399 Euros in Europe, and retailers are claiming $699 price point in Australia.)
Retailers are reporting that the unit will be stripped of its card reader like the original 20GB PS3. However, it will ship with a 40GB HDD, it will include WiFi, but it will not contain the PS2 chipset at all, meaning no PS2 Graphics Synthesizer GPU, and no backwards compatibility (unless Sony plans on full software BC somewhere down the road, but that seems unlikely).
This BestBuy slip also seems to confirm that it will ship with Spider-Man 3 packed in.
Will Ratchet & Clank Future: Tools of Destruction ship packed-in as well? Some are speculating, as the game was delayed from its October 23rd release one week, after going gold. That seems unlikely, as perhaps the delay was just to emphasize one of the PS3's biggest fall titles at the release of this new SKU.
The obvious point of contention is the lack of Backwards Compatibility. For many, BC doesn't really mean much for consoles in general but it usually a highlight of Sony consoles, especially since the PS2 had such a strong library. Granted, $399 is a decent price to pay for the cost of having to keep your PS2 around, but for some it'll be too much of a tradeoff. I know a few friends who'll be picking this new SKU up this month, while others will be waiting for a price drop on the 80GB unit next year, which is rumoured to hit around the time Metal Gear Solid 4, Grand Theft Auto 4, and LittleBigPlanet are released.
