The battery that ships with the model is "more efficient," i.e. it gives you the same amount of battery life as the old model, but with less power needed.
You can still use one of the original batteries (either the normal or heavy duty models that last even longer), and it will give you longer battery life. However, the PSP Slim standard battery is smaller, so an original model battery will not allow you to use the Slim's battery cover.
You can, however, order a replacement cover designed specifically to fit with the older batteries from Sony free of charge. Early reports suggest you can get around 10 hours minimum on a PSP Slim, using the standard original battery, and around 15 hours using the heavy duty original battery.
US and Japan use different region codes for UMD. They do however, share the same region code for BD, even though all BD players are region-free.
