    Re: New MGS4 Video

Umm, where to start? Oh, I know. *Ahem*

So, I'm at the airport, leaving civilisation to travel back to work for a month, and I'm browsing through the magazines at the news-stand while I wait for the queue to go down at my gate. I buy a Wii magazine (I own a Wii), an indie 360 magazine (yup, same here) and the OFFICIAL Playstation 3 magazine (you knows it), and I manage to get through about a week of my trip before I have to open them up.

I'm not afraid to say that I've been more than a little disappointed with the PS3, as due to a severe lack of any killer app (or even any half decent game that isn't available and IMHO better on the 360) it's been utilised as little more than an already under used Blu-Ray player. However, I notice that the PS3 magazine has an article about FFXIII and a disc with footage of the new MGS game which I've heard so much about.

Well, I get about 3 pages in to the magazine and although I'm liking the look of FFXIII, I start to feel a little queasy with all the progaganda being spouted out at me from the pages and I put on the DVD to take a look at the MGS demo, complete with walkthrough talkthrough. I think I get something like 30 seconds maybe into that and then *BAM* I threw up all over myself. Honestly. It wasn't even just a little bit either. It was all over me... and the bed... and the floor.

I managed to stagger through to the bathroom, got on all 4s and heaved into the toilet... then again, into the sink... then again, into the base of the shower. Then I lay down on my back, spent.... and was caught off guard as I threw up all over myself again. Then I passed out on the ceramic tiles.

I woke up about 3 in the morning, room covered in partially digested food and with a big X on my face, about 1/4" deep, from where my cheek had been laying in the grout track between the tiles on the floor. I compose myself, take a deep breath and clean the place up before setting off for work.

In the whole magazine, the only thing that intrigued me was the 3 or 4 page article about the 2 FFXIII games that are coming out on PS3, exclusively. Now, I'm intrigued because I'm a high level RPG nerd-geek, but these guys are trying to pass it off as "even if you don't like RPGs, you're all going to buy this and this alone is going to save PS3... oh yeah, except for MGS4 which is SOOOOOOOoooooOOOooo ACE, and... like... Oh, just totally ace. It's just like real life and... oh, it's just ace" which is obviously not going to happen. Worst thing is, I think these people actually believe what they are typing. */sigh*

    Meanwhile, back in reality....
Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha. Ha ha ha ha. Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha.

"Ok, now I'll just pause the game, cycle through about 75 menus and switch to specific 'statue camouflage' before cupping this other statues ballbag. Now I'm going to lie on the floor, about 2 feet from a soldier who doesn't see me, cycle through another 75 menus and switch to active camouflage, which makes me blend in with the floor or wall, but that isn't really necessary because the soldier doesn't see me from 2 feet away anyways.

Now I'm going to shoot this guy in the face with my rifle, but his soldier friend next to him doesn't hear the shot or see/hear his friends head explode. Now I'm going to sneak up behind this guy and instead of silently killing him with my knife or knocking him unconscious with a handle blow to the head, I'm going to use it to electrocute him (WTF??) and move on.

Now I'm going to magically pull a metal drum can from my pocket (WTF??) and use it to climb inside and roll into the legs of these 2 sodiers and knock them out (WTF??) then leave this magazine of girls in bikinis on the floor in case a guard walks past, so that he'll see it and then be engrossed for the next 3 days.

Now I'm going to use the already obsolete before it was even launched 6-axis function of the controller and use it to control a small robot that appears and disappears into thin air (WTF??) before laying on my back and using the throw grenades while lying on my back gimmick.

Now I'm going to stand up tall, out here in the open, while bullets zing past, and take pot shots at soldiers until everyone is dead and I can move on to the next objective."

When is my faith in the PS3 going to turn out to be worth it? I actually WANT the PS3 to be good. I've wasted a lot of money on it but have stuck to my guns and told all my laughing friends "Oh, you'll see. The games are coming my friend, the games are COMING". Then I see this video and just feel like smashing the thing up in a fit of disappintment/depression. Where are all the exclusive/good games?

I honestly don't think I can take much more of this

Is this a joke? You have to be kidding me. MGS4 is going to be an amazing game. And the trash can thing...it has always been a "Funny" thing you could do in the metal gear solid games.

No, not a joke. You must be joking, right? You have to be kidding ME.

MGS4 is quite possibly the biggest PS3 let down so far for me.

And a fold-away cardboard box is one thing, a metal drum can is something entirely different. It's either a stealth 'em up which prides itself in it's realism or it isn't. Either way it needs to make it's mind up.

I give it 10 thumbs down, based on that piss poor demo.

It's a video game, they can do whatever they want with it, cardboard box or no. The game isn't supposed to be extremely realistic, we have too many games that try to be like that anyways.

And going through 2 menus to select your camo isn't exactly as difficult as you make it out to be. I view it as having lots of choices as to what you get to do, and how you go about doing things, not as a hassle.

I'm more or less in the same boat, but a tad more optimistic as I actually like most of what's out for PS3. Did you not even try Resistance? #2 is out this coming fall and it looks like it's going to just pwn.

            That, alongside FF13 and LBP.

Also, we don't know what difficulty setting that was on. MGS is renowned for it's notoriously awesome AI (on the higher difficulty settings).

Honestly, that demo had to be done in the easy modes. I dare you to try MGS3 on the European Extreme difficulty and tell me the soldiers are retards.

Well, being as I spent several hundred dollars on my PS3 (same as all of the other PS3 buyers) I'd better damn well love it. Although the Xbox and Wii are getting some games that make me feel like I should have bought them instead, I feel that buying a PS3 will be worth it in the end.

Also, besides FFXIII and Little Big Planet, I'm also looking forward to Home, although there has been no news about how far it has been pushed back this time.

                People are failing to see the pattern;

The same exact things happened with PS1 and PS2. Slow starts, but eventually after a few years on the markets both consoles made themselves known for the beasts they truly were.

PS3 will be no different. The killer apps are on the way, and it's only going to get better, especially with developers like Insomniac working to unleash the CELL's full potential.

But don't take my word for it; just wait until God of War 3 comes out.

                  Re: New MGS4 Video

At the end of the day, gamers don't care whether the "true potential of the Cell is unleashed". The only thing they care about is having good games to play. Super Smash Brothers Brawl is going to release in the US in less than a month and will undoubtedly be regarded as one of the greatest games of all time. And it was done with a dual-layer DVD, an outdated CPU, and an outdated GPU.

Less "this game uses 6 of the Cell's SPEs" and more "Uncharted is an awesome game" please. Thanks.

Aye, that's pretty much what I was getting at. Only it's better articulated here by a normal person without my issues.... and Uncharted is pure pish, BTW

                      Not on your shelf, apparently.

I feel sorry for you if you have to completely disregard the PS3 because no game managed to break major sales in the US so far. Last year was host to some of the best titles ever made on all three platforms, PS3 included. A true gamer cares only about the quality of the titles released, not how many units they sell or how exclusive they are.

And does it really matter that Snake pulls a drum can out of his pocket? He is a clone, waging war against his brother clone who's possessed the body of some old Russian dude through his arm, who rides in a gigantic freakin' bipedal nuclear tank that howls like an animal, with cyborg ninjas, child robotic geniuses, coke-drinking monkeys and bisexual vampires on the side. Realism doesn't automatically make a game good, and MGS is among the very best, and most important, in history.

Also, try not to revive a nearly year-old thread just to bash on the topic. Try to be more constructive in your discussion. This thread is being closed.

                        Re: New MGS4 Video

Well excuse me if I'm the only who's sick of developers not using anywhere close to what the PS3 is capable of and having so many games look the same on both PS3 and 360.

The PS3 can put out a hell of a lot better than what we've seen so far, and I would like to see it.

EDIT: Solid Snake is not a clone, nor is Liquid. All 3 of them (Solid, Solidus and Liquid) are Big Boss' sons.

MOD EDIT: Damn you for posting before I closed the topic. The Sons of Big Boss were "genetically created" (i.e., cloned) using the fictional "Superbaby Method" which allowed one of them to be engineered (Liquid) into the perfect soldier and the perfect image of Big Boss, receiving all the dominant genes. Had they been born like normal humans, Solid Snake wouldn't be aging at a rapid rate. This is happening because of the early methods of cloning in the 1970s.
