  • PS3 wireless

I was so annoyed with my sister hogging my PS2 that I bought a PS3(well I wanted to play Ninja Giaden too) but I'm having some issues with setting up the built-in Wi-fi. I'm way down in the basment at the edge of my house and the router is upstairs in about the middle of the house.

I have linksys Wireless G router and since I was down in a hole I bought a wireless extender(repeater) to boost the signal. I have slight wars with my Wii and it's wi-fi as well but it usually only lasts an hour or two and then it works.

My thing is: I get the PS3 online for anywhere from 5-20 minutes and it cuts out...it shouldn't do this since the signal stregeth from the booster is around 40%(not that good but hey it should work!). The PS3 also fails the connection test when I run it...

I can't even do the updates on FFXI since it's being that annoying...I swear is a miricle I got the system updated, got the PS2 system file and got POL up to date. Any ideas?

BTW: I had my PS2 running off it's own wirelesss G bridge and it stayed connected just fine. I'd hate to have to use it instead of thr built-in...

    Re: PS3 wireless

This is the problem with wireless not every "connection" is the same. 40% signal strength is horrible for a wireless connection, you want atleast 80% for stable connectivity.

You're going to either have to get another repeater, or move the wireless router to the basement.

A last alternitive, is drill a hole up in the floorboards, and run a cat5 up there (what I'd do).

Wireless is great technology, but it's so limited in what it can do it's not even funny. Make you have no "cordless" house phones around that are running on the same frequency (they will cause disturbance, if they are 2.4GHz, which most are). Also, depending on how much the signal has to go though, it could be getting degraded though the walls, and the repeater isn't enough to boost it up.

      Re: PS3 wireless

the thing is that my mom does not like wires running eveywhere and holes in the floor so I'm stuck. Maybe if I was silly and wired it to the same wireless bridge my PS2 was on it'd work better.(also that booster cost $100 and is in the next room over)

The bridge only gave me trouble once or twice down there but I just think it's really silly to use that when I paid for a $500 machine with built-in Wi-fi....

Do you have a long piece of string you could get? The max range on a cat5 is 100feet. You could try taking an estimate rage to the router, and just run a cable up there.

Also, try changing the Wi-Fi channel to somethign else (and make sure your cordless phones are something different), this could fix your problem. You're losing signal someplace.

Could help but I'm also gonna check the repeater because I wasn't sure I set it up right(haven't been since I got it)....in fact I can see 2 access points...both with a not so good signal...(I figure 1 is the repeater and 1 is the router)

as for the wire...my mom does not want to be tripping over them either.

My Wii works 80% of the time...then it gives me troubles...but the PS3 is forever loosing the access point...

Now that you mention it (I've never used a wireless repeater, even though i'm A+ and Net+ (working on CCNA, took the class, studying for the test, gooo programing cisco routers in 4 mins!), it sounds like you don' thave the routing set up correctly. Does your main router have the correct wireless forwarding options to it?

              Re: PS3 wireless

well it's a pretty old linksys and I haven't updated the firmware in forever becuse the last time I did I had to fully reset it(caused me a pain in the).

The booster I got is lynksys's wireless notebook extender...my little borther swears that it did him some good but I was never sure I got it working the way it was suposed to be since...well the Wii and my PS3 are giving me troubles.

As a temp fix I pulled the wireless G bridge off of my PS2 and wired it to the ethernet port on the PS3. This seems to work alot better than the built in wireless...but it's really silly to waste a $100 ethernet bridge on something that's suposed to have it's own Wi-fi XD

                Re: PS3 wireless

I'm not too knowledgable when it comes to WiFi but it is probably a matter of your range or objects in the house interfering with the signal which might be weakened because of the longer range.

My PS3's just a floor above exactly where my router is, so Wireless gives me no problems. As Inu said, 2.4ghz phones could be interfering.

I'm also moving this thread to General Gaming as it has more to do with game system network setup than FFXI setup in particular.

                    Re: PS3 wireless

From my experience, you want whatever you're gaming on to have a solid connection, and so having a dependable CAT-5 cable plugged from your consoles directly to the router is encouraged. Better to have your non-gaming laptops and PCs deal with the whole wireless thing.

                        Re: PS3 wireless

I should have been more specific: you mentioned running a CAT-5 cable through the house. I was thinking more along the lines of moving the router itself to another location entirely, as in, near the consoles and utilize the wireless capabilities of the PCs/laptops instead. Generally a house will have more than one outlet for cable/phone.

                          Re: PS3 wireless

Have you tried shifting the ps3 around in the room? The first thing I'd do is just test it next to the repeater. If it still shows poor connection, that's probably the issue.

On the other hand, you describe 2 networks present, so the repeater superficially seems to work but neither signal was very good. Sounds like interference. Just generally moving the transmitter and receiver around in a trial and error fashion might help.

Can't think of anything else, I'm new to this wifi thingy myself but I've managed to position my antenna to cover the entire house except the stairs just through trial and error.

sorry because of mr. lame's keywrod search at work I have not gotten to this untill now. Desipite my reservations I updated the router's firmware today from version 2 something to version 4. This seems to have solved the problem with the PS3 constantly yelling that it was geeting DCed from the access point. My router is a WRT54g vesrion 1.1 and I foret the moedl of the repeater at the moment.

The signal strgenth is at 60%+(still not good) so I'm still wondering about that repeater. I mean it's just in the room next door and about 100 feet from being below where the router sits....
