People use Paladins to tank at endgame in WoW?

Some do, though most want them to heal. They can't get into instances unless they're Protection or Holy spec, and they can't solo well at all unless they're Ret spec.

Similar to how Priests almost have to spec Shadow to solo with any real speed, but no one really wants a Shadow Priest in an instance. Or a Feral Druid, etc.

        Not that I blame them.

I don't blame them either. It's pretty much come down to Tank, Healer, CC/DD, CC/DD, and CC/DD. Feral druids can tank with the right gear so they fit in, but Shadow Priests don't heal well, they can't tank, and they can't CC.

For the record, most priests in the PvE end game tend to be shadow. It's not just a solo thing. In fact, priests tend to be in more of a damage dealer role with Vampiric Embrace and Vampiric Touch while Paladins and Druids tend to focus more on the healing.

Priests that spec so that they can't heal, forcing other classes to do the healing for them.

              Nice.

And I've seriously never seen that phenomenon outside of extremely selfish priests.

I never really understood it. Rogues can't spec to heal, but Priests can spec to deal damage. Warriors can't spec to heal, but Druids can spec to tank and deal damage all in the same tree while retaining their ability to heal.

I'm a fan of traditional roles. Talent trees aren't a bad idea, but they really need to operate within a specific role. People naturally want to deal damage, and if you give them the choice between healing or dealing damage you're going to lose out on healers. They just need to make them more appealing or rewarding.

Personally I like to jump out from behind trees and hit people with hammers.

Actually, many Priests who spec shadow aren't really being selfish at all. Consider this, if some of your priests spec shadow and get Vampiric Touch, the mana gain allows the Druids, Paladins, and remaining non-shadow Priests to heal for much longer. Plus the Mages and Warlocks in the Shadow Priest's party get more mana to do even more damage. This also filters down to Karazhan and to 5 person dungeons; albeit less effectively in 5 person dungeons. If you need evidence of this, look up in the WoW Armory the Priests in the guild that I belong to, Death and Taxes on Korgath. A few of them are shadow for this reason.

I'm not really that invested in this conversation.

WoW is terrible. It's fun at first and then you get bored. I personally couldn't even level past 27 that I got so bored. You go and kill some NPCs, fun. You go on your first few dungeon-runs, fun. You do that eleventy-billion more times and you've got no life. Quests are terribly repetitive. Professions are like grinding, only instead of a sword, you have a pick axe, and instead of hitting a living thing, you're hitting a rock. You go smelt that together into a useless item that you're never going to use, because it's like 10 levels too shitty. I could go on, but I don't feel like it.

                              FFXI >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> WoW

EDIT: I also remember one time I was in a dungeon, and some really good drop came up. It was a good shield. I needed it, so I clicked "Need" and everyones like, "OMG U DONT KNEED THAT U HAV 2H SWORD." and I said, "I want to train my 1H once in a while too." and then they promptly kicked me out of the party, and a kid was PMing me all night blabbering about how many lvl 60's he had, and I kept telling him to get a fucking life, etc. etc. I hate the people on WoW.

I'm not sure that I'd suggest taking the advice of someone who couldn't even make it to 30 in WoW.
