Re: Ugh. Someone talk me out of it.

Why not try WoW? With so many people playing, you're bound to find a whole bunch of new friends suitable for you.

Try LotR while you're at it, too.

So many people on my LS are able to handle two games or more games at once. @_@ I don't know how they managed to play FFXI and/or WoW and/or Pokemon... I can't even handle FFXI...

WoW is fun. It gets less fun towards the end; although you don't HAVE to join a raiding guild (although a lot of the good stuff can only be gaine via raiding)

Compared to FFXI, the grind is more transparent. You won't notice it until you want to unlock some of the higher level instances or gain rep with certain factions.

I got bored of WoW after I reached the higher levels (raiding severely turns me off)

Try one of the RP servers. They tend to have the most mature playerbase, although due to WoW's subscriber levels, the law of lowest common denominator still applies.

If you try WoW, pick up Burning Crusade and go through one of the starting areas for the new races. The new zones in Burning Crusade are so much better designed than the ones in WoW classic. Unfortunately as a new player you'd still have to go through level 20-60 in the old zones, which while good, aren't as good as the new zones.

Don't Feba, don't. I did a trial a while back just so a friend who loves WoW would stop bothering me, and the trial doesn't let you access any of the things from the expansion packs, including the races. The battle system is as easy as they say (you never have to rest, even your MP is gradually recharged!). Your race determines where you start, there is no changing jobs as far as I can tell, and the emotes are totally idiotic.

But, if you do happen to go down that road some years in the future, I will warn you that my friend told me the Horde tends to have more mature players than the...whatever they call themselves--the other faction. Polls showed more college players than prepubescents chose that faction. And, apart from battles, you do not socialize with the other factions in a peaceful manner. Another thing I didn't like about the game--they predetermine who your friends will be.

It's a free trial. He really has nothing to lose here. Saying "Don't do it" makes virtually no sense.

              Agreed with Murphie.

Apples and oranges, really. Just go into it not comparing it to FFXI, but judging it on it's own merits.

Oh, and to Lilani: You will have to rest eventually. After a point, your Spirit stat can't keep up with your mana/second. Not until you can pick up a few MP/tick equip at the higher levels. Even then, you have to keep an eye on your MP consumption.

Soloing as a mage will verify this. Endless nuking stops very quickly. A mage can burn one, two or three mobs down before eating/drinking. Or herding a few mobs and AoEing them (frost spec is good for that).

I played a Warrior. Very fun and with the right talent build, very versatile as a tank or damage dealer.

Anyways, let the man at least try it, and let him decide himself.

I may be mistaken, but he might have already tried EVE. I can't recall anymore.

I was only talking him out of it because that is what he asked for.

Re: Ugh. Someone talk me out of it.

The problems with WoW I find are the most annoying are the skill trees. One tree will be good for soloing, one will be good for party play, and the other seemingly useless. So if you want to solo the whole game you're set, and if you want to party the whole game you're set, but certain classes will have trouble doing both. On top of that armor sets for the different roles become important as well. It can be a real hassle.

Class imbalances are amazing. You can almost track how the jobs become stronger or weaker within the grind. Paladins from 1-60 are OP but once they hit the outlands suddenly there's armor specifically for them, specifically for healing. Sure, they can take armor geared for Warriors, but they'll be lacking a lot of stats they might need for their casting side.

End game is instance grinding, or PvP grinding. You're pretty much subjecting yourself to the company of morons as you either clear roomfulls of enemies or roomfulls of other players. If they MAKE you pull eight enemies at a time, in a group of five, then they really need to give every tank a better way to hold hate. Even if every single person in the group has crowd control you've still got two enemies there running around uncontrolled. All bosses have a chance to drop an item nobody wants or needs, or was even meant for somebody you have in your party.
