  • The Catalogue of Lost PS3 Exclusives

Saw this article over at Slashdot, it's interesting to say the least.

    http://blog.wired.com/games/2007/07/...lost-excl.html

I think the most interesting thing is what they say at the end, that MGS4 is probably not PS3 exclusive anymore.

Also keep in mind that the "PLAYSTATION 3" logo was dropped from the new MGS4 trailer.

Personally, this is kinda entertaining. The only part about it that I wasn't laughing at was Beautiful Katamari for 360-only.

Re: The Catalogue of Lost PS3 Exclusives

I didn't click on the link, sorry.

But I gotta say I don't think exclusivity matters unless it really affects console sales. And console sales don't matter unless the gap is so big that developers will stop making games for the console you own.

In the MGS case, unless Konami stops making games for the PS3 and focus on other consoles (which I seriously doubt) then releasing a game on several consoles is a good thing, as it means more gamers will have access to the game and that Kojima/Konami will make more money.

Which in return will bring even more titles in the future for us to play.

Edit > I've never played Katamari but I'm sorry for your loss Feba. By the way did the xbox get the other Katamari titles?

        Exclusivity... is what sells consoles.

Without games people want to play, consoles really have nothing.

And no, Katamari and WeKatamari are still PS2 onry, although I think they made one for PSP

The PS3 also lost the exclusive title Devil May Cry 4,

Slashdot sure is a good source on something that's been denied countless times.

Microsoft's done a fantastic job of pulling exclusives away from Sony and Nintendo in the last year. I think their greatest strength at E3 this year will be announcing a few more major exclusives from major developers, since they're definitely beginning to throw the cash around where it counts.

And yeah, Beautiful Katamari was on PSP, and it sucked. Hopefully Namco Bandai still knows how to make Katamari games with the director gone.

I think that the PS3 will suffer from this, but I am pleased, since I have a XBOX360 myself. And I think it is an excellent console in every way.

If Final Fantasy XIII goes to XBOX360, I will seriously be so happy that I will cry. I really want that game, but not sure if PS3 is worth it only because I'm such a damn Final Fantasy dork.

Re: The Catalogue of Lost PS3 Exclusives

MGS4 is unfortunately coming out far too early in the PS3's life span. Hideo Kojima has been interviewed about the system and MGS4 a few times and expressed his fondness of the system quite a bit. He's one of those crazy guys who likes to push things to their limits and give us the best possible presentation.

He feels only PS3 can do that (and he's right by the way) and from what I can tell it doesn't seem like he gives two shits about the cost. (Konami on the other hand likely has an issue with this; Cell and Blu Ray are superior but also cost a hell of a lot more to develop for)

Thing is though Blu Ray's full storage capacity hasn't been reached yet (50 GB) only up to around 25 GB I believe is currently usable (I'm not sure why either, I don't know all the technicalities/intricacies of blu ray) and like every other playstation before it, the most impressive games (at least visually anyway) always come out after a few years of release.

But then again, Kojima is insane. MGS2 came out pretty early in PS2's life and was absolutely mind blowing (like pretty much every other entry in the series save for Acid) so if anyone can pull it off it's him.

I agree by the way, that exclusives for the most part suck. Aside from first party games and anything that is programmed specifically for a console (e.g. you wouldn't want to try any kind of Wii specific game on 360 due to extreme difference in controls and vise versa) there isn't a whole lot of reason to keep games exclusive.

So far my only major gripe is that losing some of those exclusives is really hurting Sony and I for one would really hate to see the company (and PS3 along with it) go under. That would ultimately suck in the end (Fanboys can go to hell) for everyone really since each console offers a unique experience.

Re: The Catalogue of Lost PS3 Exclusives

I like exclusives since I tend to take sides with consoles. I've always detested Xbox 'cause I just feel like Microsoft wants even more money, so they threw something together at first. Now they're an established console, but I still find it a rather disgusting one. Personal opinion, you know?

I'd prefer for titles to stay exclusive, especially ones that have been established exclusives in the past. MGS always at least came out -first- for PS1/2 onry, and then afterwards there'd be a remake, which is okay with me. But for both coming out at the same time...that just affords 360 more fandom, which I personally don't want.

If FFXIII comes out for 360 I disown SE without a second thought. They dishonour my family, and my love for their series by coming out for 360.

Re: The Catalogue of Lost PS3 Exclusives

Isn't MGS4 supposed to be released late this year or early next year? This late in the game development, if it is no going to be released on X360, it's going to be a straight port. Which usually isn't very good for a game.

I'm bum'd by Devil May Cry & Assassin's Creed, but not surprised by GTA IV. I mean we've known for some time it was going to be released on both PS3 & X360s. We know that software titles sell consoles, and unless all consoles are released on the 1st day, he with the head start has a HUGE head start! Why boy a console when you already have one that plays the title you want, no matter how good/bad the hardware is. Something has to stand out for the consumer to spend that kind of money. We need something unique and different to go buy different types of hardware.

Not everybody falls into the category, like so many of us, of collector. Buying multiple systems because we've had them all since we were kids, and now as adults we can afford all these toys. But for the average household it comes down to what Mom & Dad will splurge on. Wii has a build in unique quality, X360 was here first, and PS3 is expensive. Who cares about their hardware? This means nothing to most people. Wii's hardware isn't that great, but they're flying off the shelves (And outta people's hands for that matter.) at an awesome pace. Last time I was in Best Buy, I personally saw 5 Wiis walk out the door, and other people in the Wii isle picking out games for when theirs walked out the door.

I understand that exclusives hurt the industry on a whole, but help specific divisions in a monetary way. But often it's our real only hope to spark innovation. Too many sequels, prequels, or series out there and not a whole lot that's just flat out new. Having something never done before is nice, but having that same game on 1 platform means the development team can focus on how to max out one set of hardware and not 2 or 3 extending production time and costs. Having multiple consoles on the market keeps them competing for your dollar, and in theory prevents crappy games. But 2 or 3 consoles that all have the same games could possibly enter into that realm. Make one game, port to everybody else, and watch the game flop because there are exclusive games worth their salt that we can pick up instead.

Ah, you must be a FF7 Fan, you can always tell them in the mix.
Anyway, back on topic. I've been saying this for awhile, MGS4 will be coming to the 360, I called it about a year ago. Konami knows where their money base is for the MGS franchise, and it's here, In America. Metal Gear Solid showed horrible support on the Playstatioin for it's lifespan in Japan, and we bought more copies of the game because these are the types of games that make it here in America.
Once MGS2: SoL came out, they released it in America first, Kojima wanted to show his fans apperiation for his game.

Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty (Limited Edition) Konami 11/29/01 JP
It wasn't much of a delay, but it was released here first. For Metal Gear Solid 3, it was also released here first, but this time, by a month and a half delay. Yes, I know both of these titles are on the PS2, but here's the killer fact, the PS2 was and is (and continues to outsell the ps3 even to this day), alot cheaper at that time. As big as a MGS freak as I am (my friend and I speed run though the first game in under 2 hours >.>), I'm not placing down money on a PS3 just to play MGS4, I'm sorry, i don't have that kind of cash (And Untill White Knight comes out, I really have no reason to get a PS3, but one game isn't going to sell an almost 800$ system to me (after cables, and tax, and accessories). I just can't afford it, and neither can the mainstream world.

Here's my take on the situation, and I called this about 2 months ago. Sony has paid off both SquareEnix and Konami to "keep" MGS4 and FF13 "exclusive" untill a little while after e3 (and the price drop of the ps3). I feel about 1-2 months after the PS3 price drop (and people go out and buy the console finally), you'll start seeing these ps3 exclusives drop onto the Xbox360, way too late now for the new ps3 owners.

                      =--=--=--=--=--=

On a completely different subject, the creator or bandai I don't remember which, has expressed interest in a Katamari game for the Wii. I don't remember where I read that, but it was intresting, and it could be easily done, you just take away the joystick's on the ps2, and move that to the wiimote and the nunchuck.

No. I don't like FF7, it's over-hyped, over-played, and just not as good as fanboys think it is. I don't like 360, and think of it as crap. So I'd hate to see one of my favorite series given to them.
