Re: The Catalogue of Lost PS3 Exclusives

I kinda see something at play here that I've seen with Nintendo years and years ago. No matter how much others may think they are or want them to - Nintendo does not compete with Sony or MS. They make thier competitors compete with themselves and MS is wise to it because they have a history of doing that, too.

The existance of Wii and its hardware forces PS2 and PSP to remain relevant hardware technology. I think you'll be surprised next week to find that a lot of games will go Multiplatform between PSP and Wii, Wii and PS2 or PSP and PS2. Maybe all three even. There may be more of these than 360 or PS3 games.

With PS2 already established, Wii cemented in the market and PSP finally coming into its own, last gen is not dead nor is it going away any time soon. Its here to stay for years to come. And meanwhile DS is out there doing its own thing demanding its own games. Wii forces the issue of this own games too, but uses lower tech to make development costs attractive and Nintendo knows PS2 and PSP also have that point about them.

A developer can make a game for one or all three of these platforms and stand to make a very good profit, and with a greater install base here, theres more than enough good reasons to, especially with Wii and PS2 being winners on hardware sales.

360 and PS3 are vastly more expensive to make games for, but 360 does have a better price point than PS3, assuring it will have a large install base, thus retaining developer interest. Plus it doesn't hurt that MS foots the server bills for XBL games, devs don't even have to worry about support there.

MS killed Xbox off because they knew they'd be competing with themselves and the switch from Nvida to ATi made things even more complicated already. Its not a matter if Xbox could have lived longer, in the mind of MS it had to die and that was likey a good decision, as ugly as it sounds.

Because now they're not in the trap Sony has laid for themselves. Its a trap Sega and others fell into when trying to compete with Nintendo. Sega shot for a handheld brand, tried to make it cutting edge like the Genesis against Nintendo's simple (or boring) black and green color. But people stuck to Game Boy because what GB had was unique to it, even separate from the NES and SNES later on.

Nintendo always strives to give thier systems thier own identity. They once made the mistake of competing with themselves and they learned from it with Virtual Boy. It was a failure for many other reasons, but the fact that it competed with Game Boy was one of them.

Wii and DS don't compete. They're not the same systems, you might see a few games that make the systems interact, but the style of play in both systems, along with the games they get will be somewhat different.

PS2 and PSP totally compete with each other, but Wii is not competing with them. Wii is merely exploiting the fact that they all share similar tech as a means to keep developers looking at that sweet, lower development cost when consider picking next gen hardware over Wii and the other systems.

They basically rigged it so Sony has themselves by the balls. What's Sony going to do, tell developers not to make games for PS2 and PSP? Would you squeeze your own balls?

Oh dear Lord, why WOULDN'T I? I Love my balls.

But in regards to your post, I agree with you.

The fact that the PS2 is still so successful hurt Sony. Well, not really, but it did.

The XB360 came out, thrust the market into the next generation, and the cards were in Sony's hand. They couldn't just throw the PS3 out there and kill the momentum that the PS2 had, but the pressure was on them to deliver.

Ultimately, I think Sony made the best decision for both gamers and the market, even though they are hurting for it right now. This was probably the only decision that a Big Corporation made for the sake of it's own interests that actually was good for gamers. Them precariously balancing the impact that the PS2 had on consumers while trying to advocate new technology all while they're trying to have 3 different platforms succeed is a very complicated task.

And they have strong competition on 2/3 formats.

As it stands, I'm going to buy a New TV, a PSTwo and probably a CRAP load of games I never got to touch. The Post 32-bit era was a great era for gaming. (I owned a PS2, but I sold it months ago. Now I'm recoiling from that. I mean, they shyt is DIRT cheap and there are a TON of games in the Greatest Hits label.)

IMO, PS3 was released at least a year too early. Sony still hasn't fully implemented the 1080p playback for PS1 and PS2 games. They released a recent patch that upscales the games a bit, but it's still not true HD. In fact, most of the PS2 games that have a native 480p look better in that native resolution as opposed to being upscaled and/or smoothed.

And BBQ is right. Nintendo has never tried to dominate the market. What they've always done is get themselves into a comfortable position where they know they'll keep making money and just run with it. They don't have to compete; they know that there are a lot of people that love their games since they mainly target the family and casual gamers. They're not concerned with say, the hardcore FPS or RPG fans out there. They'll throw them a bone once in a while , but they really don't need to.

I have to admit though, much as I love Nintendo's 1st party games, I think I speak for everyone when I say this; I'm REALLY sick and tired of only getting one major Zelda game per new console. Twilight Pricness was amazing, but now we won't see the next "uber" Zelda for at least 3 years probably. The same applies to most of their other big franchises (where the hell is Mario 64 2? Sunshine was a total joke, and I'm not that big on the new one they have for Wii).

Why don't they do something cool, like remake A Link to the Past (arguably the best Zelda ever and my personal favorite) for Wii? That game had so many unique items and dungeons it would be great to have it rendered in full 3D with the Wiimote to boot.

Also, it's MS and Sony who are at war, with MS stepping on Sony's toes. They're essentially trying to see who can put out the best games of X genre. MS has the advantage now, but I wouldn't count Sony out yet. Sony is packing some potentially serious heat. They just have to wake up, smell the coffee and get their act together.

A good place to start (other than the price drop of PS3; dead horse much) would be their PR. Their conferences @ E3 are always impressive to say the least. Phil Harrison is a great guy. But for once, please, just admit it when you guys screw up. MS has *horrible* PR, but at least their honest about their plans for global conquest >_ >

And nothing short of genocide could hurt Nintendo's PR.

Lastly, if nothing else I'd like to see Capcom get off their asses and remake the old Mega Man games but in full 3D on either PS3 or Wii with fully interactive environments. There's nothing wrong with classic Mega Man, in fact the MM series is still one of the strongest out there. They just need to actually revamp it rather than churning out spin-off after spin-off.

Oh yeah, and would it kill them to release a Mega Man 9 or X9 and finally END those story arcs? I'm soooooo sick of Capcom's BS with the MM series. Battlenetwork and Zero have been the only series so far to actually have endings.

If Nintendo were to remake a Zelda game at this point, it would probably be OOT. Heaven knows they haven't rereleased it enough, but they'd LOVE to abuse all the models they already have from TP i'm sure.

MM2 was the first video game I ever played. Freaking love the series to death, and it still has a lot of potential. The problem is that Capcom has made it stale with lackluster sequels and spin offs.
