Re: The Catalogue of Lost PS3 Exclusives
I kinda see something at play here that I've seen with Nintendo years and years ago. No matter how much others may think they are or want them to - Nintendo does not compete with Sony or MS. They make thier competitors compete with themselves and MS is wise to it because they have a history of doing that, too.
The existance of Wii and its hardware forces PS2 and PSP to remain relevant hardware technology. I think you'll be surprised next week to find that a lot of games will go Multiplatform between PSP and Wii, Wii and PS2 or PSP and PS2. Maybe all three even. There may be more of these than 360 or PS3 games.
With PS2 already established, Wii cemented in the market and PSP finally coming into its own, last gen is not dead nor is it going away any time soon. Its here to stay for years to come. And meanwhile DS is out there doing its own thing demanding its own games. Wii forces the issue of this own games too, but uses lower tech to make development costs attractive and Nintendo knows PS2 and PSP also have that point about them.
A developer can make a game for one or all three of these platforms and stand to make a very good profit, and with a greater install base here, theres more than enough good reasons to, especially with Wii and PS2 being winners on hardware sales.
360 and PS3 are vastly more expensive to make games for, but 360 does have a better price point than PS3, assuring it will have a large install base, thus retaining developer interest. Plus it doesn't hurt that MS foots the server bills for XBL games, devs don't even have to worry about support there.
MS killed Xbox off because they knew they'd be competing with themselves and the switch from Nvida to ATi made things even more complicated already. Its not a matter if Xbox could have lived longer, in the mind of MS it had to die and that was likey a good decision, as ugly as it sounds.
Because now they're not in the trap Sony has laid for themselves. Its a trap Sega and others fell into when trying to compete with Nintendo. Sega shot for a handheld brand, tried to make it cutting edge like the Genesis against Nintendo's simple (or boring) black and green color. But people stuck to Game Boy because what GB had was unique to it, even separate from the NES and SNES later on.
Nintendo always strives to give thier systems thier own identity. They once made the mistake of competing with themselves and they learned from it with Virtual Boy. It was a failure for many other reasons, but the fact that it competed with Game Boy was one of them.
Wii and DS don't compete. They're not the same systems, you might see a few games that make the systems interact, but the style of play in both systems, along with the games they get will be somewhat different.
PS2 and PSP totally compete with each other, but Wii is not competing with them. Wii is merely exploiting the fact that they all share similar tech as a means to keep developers looking at that sweet, lower development cost when consider picking next gen hardware over Wii and the other systems.
They basically rigged it so Sony has themselves by the balls. What's Sony going to do, tell developers not to make games for PS2 and PSP? Would you squeeze your own balls?
