Yoichi Wada can jump up my ass. Xbox 360 has been great so far, save for a few hardware issues and letdowns.

Xbox Live needs to stop bumping off split screen co-op. There are still people in the world that enjoy the physical company of worldy companions.

Re: Yoichi Wada calls the PS3 and 360 pieces of crap.

Say what you will , but of all the people I know in actual life, none of them give half a crap about PS3 or 360. None of them.

And everyone I know in actual life loves the Wii. And that's on the strength of only a handful of games. Wii Sports gets mega mileage already. As dumb as MP8 is, we can all sit around and laugh at the sheer retardedness of playing it together.

I personally could give a poo about what system does best, or who's buying what. I can't even think of more than maybe 2-3 games on all platforms that even raise an eyebrow for me. Most of these" killer apps" seem lukewarm at best. But for whatever reason, I can get 8-10 people, males and females both, at my house playing somebody's Wii games, and everybody has a blast.

As far as that being much fun playing alone, I don't see it. But I haven't seen anything in gaming period that has been very imaginative and truly innovative in years. Everything has been done 2 or 3 times already, to the point where minor innovations seem earth shattering to most gamers.

I have no idea what I'm talking about now. Blame these painkillers the dentist gave me, but I'm rambling. And for feeling nice, I'm sounding kind of pissy.

Motorstorm is a pretty good racing game that's visually and viscerally pleasing, if a bit short on tracks, and it's also great in multiplayer.
Gonna have to better than umpteenth FPS, racers and hideously bugged RPGs to get my money. If you're going to give me the same games, at least give me a new way to play them.

Motorstorm and VF5 are the only PS3 title that ever interested me, but MS is a racer and I know that interest will die in a matter of weeks. VF5 is just another remake of an perfected fighter. I can get a copy of VF4 Evo and not be missing much there.

Re: Yoichi Wada calls the PS3 and 360 pieces of crap.

About the only way any of these three companies would get me to drop large chunk of money on their "next gen" machines is to have The Killer App.

            What's The Killer App?

A substantially better looking FFXI, with very little lag in crowds (say, three parties), and scale up well to Dynamis, while having all the graphic effect bells and whistles turned up to the max.

Otherwise, my PS2 serves me just fine with my current collection of games, plus maybe an occasional infusion of $10-20 bargain bin titles like that Soulcalibur 3 I picked up two months ago.

I remember playing something like this at a store once, it was a demo for force feedback joysticks. Was fun.

Also, Lego Star Wars Collection. Coming this holiday season..

Nintendo can't win on the strength of their traditional market alone. We saw what happens when they try with the GameCube.
this is true, what I meant was that games that most 'core' gamers think of as killer apps aside, there's several highly anticipated games for the other half of nintendo's old market coming too.

having a point and shoot interface means nintendo has a serious leg up on the FPS title wars too if anyone bothers to capitalize on it (hell, shooters on rails are fun as it is with this system)

Color me dubious about the buying enthusiasm of the casual market that Nintendo's trying to cultivate. It could work, but unless they start putting out something less trashy than Mario Party 8 (and yes, MP8 most certainly sucks), the current buying habits from the casual gamers is probably not going to be sustainable.
                Icemage
MP8 is pretty trashy.. it's also the next game in a line of titles that aren't exactly known for being 'zomg I must play this' (kind of like monopoly?)

and, honestly, it's the casual gamers I know who are more excited about wii than I am. (simple titles = fun = bought) wii play, wii sports, wario ware, there's another "wii" title coming later this year, DDR.. etc.

console sales rates already show that the casual market has bought into nintendo's model, since according to so many in this thread, the killer app(s) aren't out yet. unless people think the virtual console sold 8 million copies?

Not to take anything away from Wii Sports since it's a free pack-in game, but it's seriously lacking depth. If anything, it's just a big huge tech demo for the controllers.

I agree the casual market has been very well marketed to by the Wii (probably better than even Nintendo expected ) but there's a reason why casual gamers aren't hardcore.

There are of course games that differ drastically from the pack (i.e. Dance Dance Revolution/Guitar Hero/Karaoke Revolution/SingStar et. al.) but if you look at those games from a potential standpoint, every single one of them has much better potential on Xbox 360 or PS3 due to enormously better online support. Since all of these types of games need their own specialized hardware input devices, the Wiimote is a non-factor for them.

casual gamers aren't hardcore because they don't play *as much* but it doesn't mean they won't spend just as much - this is where titles like wii sports and mario party and wario ware shine: they're playable in 15 minute increments and can be put down at any time without losing progress.

except that the wiimote will make the peripherals for karaoke/guitar cheaper (coming with built in transmission support etc) and I'm not sure I agree about the PS3 or xbox having better online support (yes, nintendo doesn't have a dedicated network and everything is peer to peer at this point) but that's not the *only* architecture wii's networking can support, just the way nintendo has done it for their titles so far. it could just as easily be massive network cliented similar to the way steam works for PC on an app by app basis.

ignoring the fact that an online component would be boring as hell for music games. It would be like combining a laggy FPS match with an online board game. Unless you mean just for episode downloads, which I'm sure could be handled through the Shopping Channel.

Since all of these types of games need their own specialized hardware input devices, the Wiimote is a non-factor for them.
Not true. DDR:Hottest Party uses the Wii Remote and Nunchuk for hand moves

                      but it's seriously lacking depth.
That's the best thing about it. Very little setup, no confusing menus, you point, you click, you play. It's not meant to be an indepth RPG, and really, sports games shouldn't. It's just something you pick up and have fun with.

The fact is, Nintendo is proving that there really is a blue ocean out there with casual gamers, and they're picking them up by the bucketload. Two examples, my uncle, huge fan of great graphics (and usually only likes games with top of the line graphics), has fallen in love with my Wii (ugh, I feel dirty saying that...) because of it's controls and the internet/news/forecast channels. My mom, who hadn't played a video game since the 80s (although she used to play D&D...) has not only picked up and loved Wii Sports and Wii Play, but even bought her own DS to play Brain Age, Big Brain, and Phoenix Wright on.

If you want to make an argument, make it on if Nintendo can attract companies to make amazing games on the wii (if you're the most popular console, the answer is yes), not if people will buy and play them.

Oh, and bashing the Wii on the titles it has now is pointless. Beyond the fact that it's a matter of opinion, everyone overlooked the Wii, until it was released.

Re: Yoichi Wada calls the PS3 and 360 pieces of crap.

Man... sensationalist thread titles and sensationalist articles FTL.

Of course Wada would defend SE's decision to make DQIX for the DS only (which doesn't exclude the chance for remakes/ports later on); this allows them to make the title they want for way less money.

Making 2 next gen titles (Dragon Quest and XIII) would drain way too many resources, but not making another DQ title would be bad too so this is a good way to handle the situation.

Also, he never even implied the systems sucked, not even close, he only stated what most people knew about this "next HD generation" since it all started. Of course both systems feel "over-engineered" since this generation isn't just about getting a new console but about everything else around it, and changes are just beginning.

However this isn't exclusive of just console gaming, it also includes TV channels, Internet, movies and many other things, so of course it's gonna be a bumpy road in the years to come till everyone catches up.

And it seems that's what he stated, nothing else.

Nintendo stated when they first announced the Wii that their target was the casual/non-gamer. They're not going after the hardcore veterans, they want to suck people in with simple, clean fun and it's working pretty well.

I just don't like the majority of Wii games at this point though. They feel *way* too gimmicky, not enough substance. Zelda TP = Art, Rayman Bunnies/Red Steel/MP8 = WTF Garbage. (all my opinion, not hard fact)

Given the sheer selling power of Halo alone I'd say Nintendo's gotta pick up the slack. I'm hoping their fall releases will do just that.

Meanwhile Sony's stuff looks good too. I hope the PS3 finally picks up the pace and gets those badly-needed killer aps out before the damn console dies. (Note: I'd be sad if any of the big 3 went under, but I do favor Sony just a bit)

It's the only reason I don't own a PS3 yet (well, that and the lack of a 1080p HDTV). The games just aren't there yet, but hopefully will be soon. Sony = the sleeping giant IMO. No one gives a rat's ass about it now, but I'm confident it'll come out blazing with the fire of 1000 suns! ^^b /cheer

And then all will be good. Everyone will have what they want, and there'll be no need for stupid fanboyism (e.g X system pwns Y system, or what have you). At least until Star Craft 2 hits the shelves >_ > (oh lawd)

Also, has anyone SEEN Sony's new online world? Holy crap does it ever put Nintendo's silly little "Mii"s to shame. I like how they handle "achievements" too. There was an example in this month's GamePRO. For Lair, there was a dragon trophy in the guy's room. That's pretty bad ass.

So in the meantime, I'll continue to pray that SE will have the good sense to remake Seiken Densetsu 2 and 3 for the PSP with the same graphic tweaks they're giving to FF1 and 2. Failing that, a virtual console release on the Wii would also be acceptable.

Uh, no. You can actually play music/rhythm games quite well online.

                                Case in point:
                                Flash Flash Revolution

Remember that the consoles themselves keep the rhythm. You really think an online version of Guitar Hero III or SingStar where you can jam with your friends across the world won't sell?

True, but simplicity of interface has nothing to do with being on or off the Wii. Look at flOw on the PS3 for instance. Perfectly pick-up-and-play.

The fact is, Nintendo is proving that there really is a blue ocean out there with casual gamers, and they're picking them up by the bucketload. Fair enough, though the DS isn't indicative of the same crowd as the Wii, per se. It's a handheld portable, and thus caters to a completely different market IMO.

If you want to make an argument, make it on if Nintendo can attract companies to make amazing games on the wii (if you're the most popular console, the answer is yes), not if people will buy and play them.

Just because it's selling a lot of hardware does not perforce magically make the titles on it not suck. The real question is "Can Nintendo convince third party developers to develop Wii-exclusive titles by sacrificing the Xbox 360 and PS3 markets".

Remember, the Wii's controls are peculiar to it. You can't port a game like Wii Sports to another platform because the game controls are central to the design. That means there's two categories of games. Games that are Wii-specific, and have to stay exclusive because of design constraints (and thus lose out on additional markets), or games that are multiplatform that don't make extensive use of the Wii-specific controls. In this second case, the Wii almost always loses (as I pointed out earlier), every single time due to lack of hardware power and lower output resolutions.
