  • Brad abandonned Sigil, SoE acquired Vanguard

Well... Brad, who was supposedly the creator of EQ1, apparantly haven't showed up at Sigil office.

    For years.

Leaving the team to fend for themselves during the very last dead line since before the game was released. Brad still continued to appear on FOH and mmorpg.com giving people impression that he's still taking full control of the game, but in fact he wasn't. A lot of my VG friends felt they were lied to, and betrayed by Brad.

And now SOE has annouced that they finally took over Sigil. Keeping 50 people from Sigil (and secretly firing the another 50)

I liked VG. I haven't played for a while now due to personal drama problem but I always thinking about going back to it once things settle down. Now reading about this, I must say I don't know anymore :O Time to look for future MMORPG I guess.

I feel bad for the 50 who were fired, but that's the nature of business in cases like that.

Wait, so SOE has another MMO to screw up?

How are they going to make vanguard worse?

Everything SOE touches tends to go to poopy.

Even The Matrix Online, which was already a complete utter failure before SOE acquired it, surprisingly got worse afterwards.

Killing off Morpheus was probably the most idiotic thing they could have done, too. I mean, he was pretty much the last thing a lot of Matrix fans were playing the game for, and his death essentially guaranteed that Neo would never return as well.

I've only watched Vanguard, not played, but I wasn't extremely moved by what I saw. Of course I only saw a small portion and I've heard great things about the game, so it's a shame that SOE's been given the chance to drive another potentially great title into the ground.

Re: Brad abandonned Sigil, SoE acquired Vanguard

Ever since how *badly* SOE fucked up Galaxies, I have sworn a vendetta against them. I will *never* play another P2P online game they offer or host. Anything they have power over goes shitty.

They thought the 'majority' wanted the changes in the NGE. That's funny as hell, because if the majority wanted it, why did such insane amounts of people quit? In most businesses, when you lose tons of revenue suddenly, it's usually a sign that you fucked up, and you change it back...

But they have this almost petulant child attitude about it and refuse. I can't believe LA even lets them keep it running. It's the laughing stock of the MMO community now.

SOE never handles anything well, they're easily the weakest link in Sony's team.

Meh, while SoE has a spotty track record, apparently EQ2 is doing quite well and has really improved. As for Vanguard... well... yeah....

Re: Brad abandonned Sigil, SoE acquired Vanguard

Damn, I was actually looking forward to buying a computer that could actually run Vanguard.. but I guess I'm gonna have to put that on hold for a while. While I never played Galalxies, I've heard from some friends that they completely f*cked up the game by completely changing the game mechanics.

Either way, I think SoE is just one end of the extreme. They don't listen to the player base and just add what they deem necessary without consulting the players or listening to their pleas. And yet, it a company where to listen to the players ALL the time, then it could be just as bad.

I guess the key would be the middle ground. Listen to players and take suggestions, but implement them in a way that creates balance, while at the same time doesn't screw over part of the player base completely.

Re: Brad abandonned Sigil, SoE acquired Vanguard

The critical points lay in the people in charge. The desicion maker should know what makes a game fun and provide players with that. Brad, from what I read, is a complete opposite. He made the game the way he wants and do not care when majority of people were against him.

A few more interesting read I found.

A little post from the game's music composer

Interview with an anonymous ex-sigil employee (very good read)

It basicly boils down to failure in the core game design stage and managerial resposibilities. Here's a few points I really dig...

                      - Vanguard doesn't have any event scripting for the quest people to use, so they can not really put cool idea into quests. Why was there no script? Because Brad didn't want one.

                      - Vanguard only had 1 Q/A. For 9 months.

                      - At the day of the lay-off, Bill , who was the employees' boss, didn't say a word himself. He let a new guy from SOE said it.
Bill however made a comment, on that scene, that he made enough money from the stock that he was going to buy a house..... What a jerk.

Damn, that was quite a great read, thanks for the link. I would absolutely HATE to be in that person's shoes. Sent an E-mail to go meet in the parking lot and get fired. I would be pissed off beyond belief. I really hope this doesn't happen to me if I become an art and design.. person for a company. To pour hours, days, months and even years into something, only to see it fade away into nothing.

Edit: I also thought the comment on buying a house was extremely inconsiderate and rude.

I'm so glad I lost interest in Vanguard within a week of getting into beta and didn't upgrade my computer for it.

It didn't help that tons of VG fanboys would vehemently squelch any type of negative criticism towards the game prior to its launch. I was in beta at the late stages, and all to frequently heard the usual "Go back to WOW!" mantra, even over legitimate concerns. I only wonder what those "vanbois" did when it turned out their "messiah" Brad McQuaid was a total fraud.
