    Really, this should be illegal.

I dunno about illegal, but I don't see how game developers & publishers can condone this. I mean, Joystiq hits it on the head. What's the point of playing a game you've already seen the ending to?

I can't imagine game makers are.

It's pretty clear now that Gamestop/EB have turned from game sellers to pawn shops. They're making all their profit now off buying back your 50 game library for 20$, then turning around and selling them off at 15$ a pop.

Which is probably good from them, because if they keep doing shit like this, they're gonna have a hard time finding publishers willing to sell through them.

Words can't describe how beyond retarded this is. Honestly, are they even trying anymore to keep publishers? I'd be surprised if Nintendo kept doing business with them if they got wind of this(which they prolly have). Nintendo is serious about its products, especially about one of its famous franchises.

Whoah, that's Lame +10, good thing there aren't any EB/Gamestop stores where I live.

Seriously, Nintendo should just stop selling to EB/GS and just start selling their titles through other retailers and online.

If I said what I wanted to about this I'd have to give myself a warning. Suffice it to say that's an absurdly offensive business practice, both to their suppliers and to their consumers. I hope they get what they deserve for it.

                  /withdraws Pokemon preorder.

Its so sad that so few good mom'n'pop game stores are left. It sad that you have to pass through a wall of conservate BS at Wal-Mart and they may not even be willing to carry the games you want. But this... this is pathetic.

I'll never go to a Gamestop again. This is blatantly trying to coherce consumers into trading in games early so Gamestop can resell them at a higher price. Its almost like subliminal advertising - which IS illegal. Story typically isn't my biggest draw to games, but you don't take a game loved by so many players and spoil it for those that haven't played it.

Imagine if Hollywood studios created dummy review shows that spoiled the ending to a rival studio's movies. That's almost what this is.

I guess I'll be shopping at K-Mart, Target, Best Buy and Circut City now. Means I won't be able to resell my games, but I have used that as a fallback too many times. Now I have a motive to stop using it as a fallback to solve money problems and buy less damn games.

Actually, you might be able to, depending on where you live. There's a place near where I live called vintage stock, they actually give you a decent amount of cash for what you bring in (brought in a box of old VHS tapes, got about 78$ in store credit, 50$ cash), look for something in your area like that. Maybe check the pawn shop or flea market sections of your phone book.

I haven't beaten TP yet, so I'm ... paranoid of clicking the link there.

                      Anyone give me a safe rundown, please? I have Pokemon Diamond preordered there, but if they've turned to asshattery, I'll gladly to revoke it and preorder at Best Buy. Stupid EB didn't have any styluses left anyway. And Best Buy did. >.>;

The article itself only talks about what gamestop's doing, although someone might have spoilers in the comments

If you morally object to the used game trade, you can't really justify selling your used games to anyone, gamestop or not, imo. After all, by providing them with used merchandise, you're enabling the sale of that game to someone else at an inflated price, and effectively giving that game's developer the shaft in the process. It's the same thing as the old arguement about gilbuyers enabling gilsellers and their associated abuses.

Yes, but as opposed to subtly shafting the developer on the consumer and retail side, this is the retail side shafting the consumer and the developer. What this does is lure business in under false pretenses.

                            Buy the game from gamestop
Gamestop ruins the ending before you may have finished it.
You come back and trade it in for what they claim is a good trade-in value.
The value of the trade-ins, in turn, steeply declines once so many games are traded.
But Gamestop would still sell them close to retail value once the trade in value plummets.

I think retailers have come to the grim realization that they're about to be cut out of game sales entirely. We're not far off from the days there will be full digital distribution of games, movie, music, news and even television, we're halfway there now. PC games can already be fully downloaded directly to PCs. And with that distributing, developers would profit greatly and consumers would probably pay less for such content.

How would you feel if you knew you're going the way of the dinosaur?
