  • Grand Theft Auto IV

The guys at Rockstar are keeping info at a minimum, but at least they released a trailer a couple of days ago.

The game's graphics (specially people) look underwhelming for a next gen game, but hopefully it's due to some massive drawing distance and stuff like that.

But then again, no one plays GTA games for the graphics.

Yeah I didn't think the graphics were too bad, of course they could be better though. I haven't played a GTA game since the first one, and don't really plan on it -- not really my type of thing.

friend and I both agree that it's interesting how different the main character is.

While the graphics might be amazing, consider the fact that this looks like it's the REAL new york, and not liberty city, and could very possibly be the Size of NYC, or even all of BosWash, which would make it much larger than San Andreas (and possibly any other video game, short of maybe oblivion... or EVE =p)

I just watched the HD trailers with a group of friends, and it seemed half of them were like "God the graphics suck"...personally, I think they look fine. The draw-distance is definitely amazing, anyways. And if world-size is increased in this new installment like it has through each of the older GTA games, then this world is going to be MASSIVE. Just Cause had a pretty large world, but I wouldn't be surprised if GTA IV is double to triple the size, meaning it could actually take you a good 20 minutes or more to get from one side of the map to the other.

          I think that's really freaking cool... ^^

Now I just need to get myself one of those new 360 elites...

Does anyone know anything about what this game is rumored to have as far as XBox Live goes? Online GTA would rule...

The graphics are amazing. Yes, the game may not be fancy in terms of straight up pushing polygons, but that's not what GTA's about. It looks like they're using the power of the PS3 and Xbox360 to create a world that is seamless. I mean, there looks like there's going to be a ton of little details. I wonder how many people can be on screen at a time though, it would be really cool if say Liberty Times Square had a ton of pedestrians and stuff. Not to mention those shadows...

                So you're a Russian, neat.

Graphics look pretty good, not as good as some current next-gen titles, but still pretty damn good. I've always enjoyed the GTA series, hope this one is as good as III.

Yep, no question about it, I'll be playing GTA IV no matter what.

VC and San Andreas were really entertaining games but I had the most fun with III (and still do once in a while since I haven't uninstalled it yet).

You just can't beat Liberty City's style and I guess the guys at Rockstar knew that from the beginning, so they saved the "IV" for the true next gen sequel.

                        Re: Grand Theft Auto IV

People nitpicking about the game's graphics need to understand that when you make a game with such a large scope such as GTA or even an MMORPG, there are things that have to fall to the wayside to keep things running smoothly.

One of those things is graphics. If you want better graphics, you have to give up the larger size and scope of the game for something smaller, that or stick it with load times to keep those big environments detailed.

Repeated character model and cut-and-paste environments are another way to keep things less taxing on any system's memory. There's a reason parts of Halvung look just like Ifrits Cauldron and why Zilart ruins look so similar, you'd have to make more data to make something totally unique in look, which would make for longer downloads.

Every house you robbed in GTA: San Andreas had the exact same interior. Kinda weird, but when you have an overworld so vast and detailed, you can't have all interiors individualized as well.

If you want a pretty game, there's plenty of them out there, but they're smaller as a result. Look at FFX vs FFXII. FFX was painfully linear and there was no overworld due to all the high detail of the characters and environments, FFXII was huge in comparison but textures were low-res, even on the character models.

Can't have it both ways - big and pretty, something's gotta give.

                          Yes, you so can.

But IV is the first next gen GTA so I'd consider it more like a PS2.5 (Xbox180?) game like most early titles. So, while the not so next gen graphics are understandable (till they get more experience and are able to pull a III to San Andreas kinda upgrade), that doesn't mean you can't expect more from them.

Although... Rockstar has never been known for pretty graphics, and for a GTA game that rarely makes a difference since the gameplay is so solid for the most part.

                            Re: Grand Theft Auto IV

The New York City officials are apparently annoyed by the way their city is portrayed in the next installment of the Grand Theft Auto game. Of course, the game is set in the fictional Liberty City, but it's quite clear which real city it copies, as it contains landmarks such as the Statue of Liberty, Coney Island's Cyclone, and the Brooklyn Bridge. The MetLife Building is renamed "GetaLife".
Vice City from GTA III's follow-up was a nod to Miami, Florida, and Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas was set on turf reminiscent of Las Vegas, Los Angeles, and San Francisco.
"The mayor does not support any video game where you earn points for injuring or killing police officers," New York mayor Michael Bloomberg said in a statement. City council member Peter Vallone, chairman of the Council's Public Safety Committee, noted that setting the game in the "safest city in America would be like setting Halo in Disneyland." The mayor's office also noted that since he took office car theft has halved and the murder rate is down by 28 per cent.
New York police commissioner Raymond Kelly doesn't care where the game is set. "It's despicable to glamorize violence in games like these, regardless of how far-fetched the setting may be," he told the AP.
In the game's trailer, a voice with an Eastern European accent is heard saying: "Life is complicated. I killed people, smuggled people, sold people. Perhaps here, things will be different."
In previous versions of the game, players killed both police officers and prostitutes. Beside the trailer, Rockstar didn’t reveal any information. It’s still unclear if the Eastern European guy who used to kill people is the main character of the game or just a member of a team.
The gameplay is also still a mystery. The previous games of the franchise were focused on a single player experience, but recent installments have dropped enough multiplayer modes to suggest that expanding beyond solo play is an interest of the series' development team.
GTA IV is due to be launched stores in North America on October 16, 2007 and in Europe on October 19, 2007 and it will be available for the PlayStation3 and Xbox 360. No word about a PC version.
A few weeks ago, new details about the game emerged. Starting 2008, Rockstar will introduce exclusive episodic content downloads for Grand Theft Auto IV.
Also in September Microsoft confirmed that the game's publisher Take-Two will provide "exclusive access to two downloadable, epic episodes of Grand Theft Auto IV via Xbox Live, each with hours of entirely new gameplay". Expect them within months after the release of Grand Theft Auto IV.
