Re: Folding@Home Now Available for PS3!

Oh, if anyone wants to compete, i've installed (and am running) F@H on my PC AND my mac (given how rarely I use it, this will most likely be running 16-24hrs a day, the PC will likely be running at LEAST 8 hours a day, although i'll probably have it open in the background 24/7)...and given that i'm looking for a new computer, I will be running three of these at once, soon enough.

Making people compete in the name of science?! Brilliant!

Lol, damn. I know I got 6 PCs I could push to do this, but damn that'll be an expense I unfortunatly can't take. Maybe I could sneak them on a few work computers since it's a requirement now to keep them on 24/7, just drop them to take about 15% of the Processor or something so it stay undetected to the users.

glad to see our team is still growing if only slowly. i hope everyone takes the time to understand what this is all about. cancer has claimed many lives in my family. more than likely will be what i die of. i have an aunt who is only 5 years older than myself who is all but wheelchair bound because of her cancer treatments. all 4 of my grand parents died from cancer, this is my reason to fight back. the little effort it took to install this on my pc's or my ps3 was so minimal. its simple to use simple to turn off and yet can be so rewarding.

yeah i saw that as well thought at first you had borrowed another ps3. but got to checking for some reason my ps3 was semi locked up or not sending information from what it was folding. we had had some severe storms messing with the power, so it must have went off at a bad time lol. i restarted it and got it all rolling again. btw i dont think pcs make that much difference since 1 ps3 = 20 pcs doing this.

lol, yeah. I noticed that looking at the CPU stats.

I mean there are like 170k computers and only getting a total of about 170 Teraflops, and then just about 20k PS3 and 250-350 Teraflops. The PS3 are easily kicking the crap out of the PCs, but with the Teraflops being so low it seems that the computers are more steadily dedicated to the work then a PS3 is.

I mean if the PS3 were staying as dedicated as the PC then 20k should be producing around 750 Teraflops. Just players keep the PS3 off more or are playing games, whatever else that would take the PS3 away from this. Still it's impressive what the PS3 is putting out.

I personally am really impressed with the PS3's processing power. I was surprised to see the movie clips I loaded onto my PS3, the PS3 took the first like 10 sec. and was playing them as thumbnails flawlessly without skipping (even when resizing).

I mean for a system to display like 7 thumbnails scalling the size down plus maintaining the fps even when you are switching between them and they are being resized and these are 720 resolution clips. On top of all that the thumbnails didn't skip or loose fps one bit is a huge feat. I seriously had been considering getting another PS3 just to install other OSs on and really see what that baby can do.

What I've been seeing it do vs. the known specs of the PS3 (since the CBE is still largely an unknown) the specs and what it's doing don't jive. The known specs state that the PS3 shouldn't be doing this stuff yet it does it and it does it flawlessly. Really makes me want to get my hands on what the CBE specs are, to bad all the developers are under NDAs with it.

Re: Folding@Home Now Available for PS3!

you have to consider though, a lot of the computers running FAH full time are like my mac- all but retired, sub 500MHz CPU boxes that are just being put to some feasible use.

Computers are capable of being more powerful, but not on average, and especially considering the FAH client isn't optimized for PCs. Simply, it's easier to optimize when you're making a client for a machine that's going to be practically exactly the same than a machine with a nearly limitless amount of hardware combinations...and that's just Motherboard+RAM+CPU, You get more parts involved, like a graphics card, and...

PS3 isn't a super computer, it's just very good at what it's been made to do. Sort of like comparing a sedan against a crotch rocket in a drag race. Yes, the cycle might win the race, but good luck bringing home your groceries on it.
