Definitely something for PCs and PS3s to do other than just the normal Idle process.
I was doing folding@home last year with my roomate, but then my comp started getting all Dell on me and it became impossible for me to do it. I might revisit the cause tho, because aside from FFXI, I'm usually at class.
LOL!
Got all dell on you, that's funny. I'm going to have to tease my Uncle on the Dell's, he's a lead developer for them and was swearing that a premade PC is better then a build yourself.
Funny with working on fixing a friends PC (his is a Dell), I came to realize the motherboards they used are wierd. I mean such a wierd mismatch of technology, I was really confused on how they thought it to be a good design. It looks more like a decent design that'll at least work but is super cheap so they can make a big profit selling at prices well above the actual worth.
It like they are pulling off what XBox 360 did, made a sub par system called it next-gen when it's really just shy of truely being next-gen. Oh well, not much you can do about that.
BTW, got the Folding@Home installed and joined the team. Oh, and did anyone see the morning news? Well at least in Arizona area they had news about the PS3 & Folding@Home. Gave stats on the PS3 stated that the PS3 had the processing power equivalent to 20 PCs. Stated that the PS3 has already advanced their research a great deal by the short time it's been working.
From this morning report on Fox News, they stated that if the PS3's contributing keep going the way it is the projected like 30 years to finish, would take something like 5 years or less.

lalala, let's not go there. It's uhhh...off topic.
Anywho, yeah, I was reading that news post about it. Apparently PS3s around the world have contributed to more calculations in the last day than PCs have been doing for the project since its inception.
As for the Dells, most every PC manufacturer does that. They build their systems so that it's nigh-impossible to upgrade or do any repairs yourself, that way you have to go to them for the job.

Oh, I've repaired and upgraded most of his system. It's just when it came to that point were the upgraded was starting to surpass the motherboard, It just seemed wierd that Dell would have such a recent Motherboard that couldn't support 512MB for Video RAM.
Then again for him to get any better he had to transfer from AGP to PCIe and DDR to DDRII so most of his issue was kind of expected really >.>
If I did have trouble though I always could call my Uncle Eddie to see if he could solve it. He's mostly got the smarts on the hardware, not so much on the software so program issues I was SOL.

hahaha what the hell. What was his explaination for that?
In regards to the PS2's power, i'm fairly sure this is because the F@H software runs entirely off the PS2's GPU, which can handle operations like this much more efficiently than a CPU. Of course, I might be wrong, but I *do* know F@H is working on making a client that uses an ATi GPU's power, although I haven't heard anything about NVIDIA. Which is sad, since most premade systems I see come with NVIDIAs, or primarily NVIDIA GPUs.
hmm we need more people on our team!!! im only seeing 7 atm and 2 of those are me. im minimee and ps3 lol. its simple to get started and for a good cause. after installed and started just put team number in, on ps 3 its triangle button, then identity, then team #55242.

Since the PS3 default Donor to PS3 have to change it. So hard to say which of those completed under PS3 are who's.
Oh and just you wait minimee, I'll catch up to the WU's you've done.... hopefully
It should be working on WU 7 or 8 by now.

Folding@Home website has the download. Download it and run it, then there should be an option to join a team. Once you got that option then you just type in the number 55242.

Well his logic was mostly that the person making the premades are better at paring the right technology that is most compatible when making the computers. So they are less likely to have wierd hiccups or unexplainable latency problems.
As far as I had read on their site though it seemed that the GPU versions they have there were intended for systems using Nvidia GPUs. Unless I missed something about what they said, don't know have to look again I kind of just thumbed through most of it.
