As I hinted earlier this year, NetDevil has been signed on to develop a massively multiplayer online game with Lego.
I think, if done right, this could very well be the next evolutionary step in massively mulitplayer online games.
"As children around the world continue to spend more time online we are developing new and engaging ways for them to interact with our brand," said Lisbeth Valther Pallesen, Executive Vice President, Community, Education and Direct Division LEGO Group. "The LEGO brand represents construction, creativity and problem solving -- values that compliment the MMOG market. By merging the online world of social interaction with physical play, the LEGO brand is providing new experiences for children, as well as fans. NetDevil's technological capability, openness to work with a large community, and their enthusiasm for the LEGO brand made them a natural partner."
"Playing with LEGO bricks and developing online worlds are both creative activities. To bring them together is deeply professionally satisfying and we look forward to working with the LEGO team," said Scott Brown, President of NetDevil"
What I've heard is that the game could be sort of like Second Life but, you know, a game. The idea, I believe, is that you will be able to construct your own in-game content using the fun and familiar mechanic of building with real world Legos.

I suspect part of the reason NetDevil was selected is because of their amazing work with destructible environments, though I'm sure their enthusiasm for game development also played a large role in the decision.

We'll be meeting with the NetDevil guys, fellow Coloradoans, later this week and I'll make sure to ask all of the right questions.
I can just hear it now:

    "This game is broken."
"Well, yeah, its Legos. Push over anything made of Legos and it breaks."

Wonder if the servers will be made of legos.

Do not mock Lego Technology, it's a proven fact you can build a time machine and/or a warp 2.5 ship with a starting kit.

I enjoy the gameplay of the Lego Star Wars games. If it's like that, I'll enjoy it. Not that I'll likely play it, because 1.) It probably won't be like the Lego Star Wars games, and 2.) I have enough MMO on my plate as it is.

If it's more like Lego Mindstorm(?) instead of Lego Star Wars, I'd be tempted.

Battling or competing with opponents/monsters which are build from pieces adhering to the same rules as players' own pieces would be neat. Have competitions to build structures (bridges, buildings, etc.) or vehicles, with prizes based on speed, ability to handle weight, or aesthetic appeal, and they can count on my money.

If it's a rigid "character" system with which you get exp and level while doing bland quests with dumb stories (e.g. "Go kill 6 red brick rabbits and GenericNPC will give you Little Dagger of smite - Lv.3, and 600 experience points."), and I'll pass.

I'll bet the red brick rabbits would be adorable though.

Hmm if they handled it well you could be able to build all the Lego SW ships and fight against other players, or build cars and race them, etc. with different blocks and sets giving you diferent stats.

You could make pets and stuff and battle Pokemon like or make a house and let other players visit it and stuff. Sadly, due to memory limitations I don't expect much freedom for players to create/save/interact with their creations (if the game actually happens to go live).

The open creation kinda setting could have the potential to become the biggest MMO sandbox if done well though.

I like lego. I don't care if this is aimed at kids, I'll probably try it out. Lego star wars was a lot of silly fun, it's sort of the perfect way to make a Lego based game.

It more or less sounds like a ripoff of Blockland, but I'm interested to see how it turns out. It has the potential to be really fun, but it could also be hella boring.
