  • Re: Lotr Mmorpg

I would give Hunter a shot, but we have a billion in the Kinship already. The awesome thing about being one of a handful of Captains is that when a Halberd drops (Captain only weapon) or heavy armor with a lot of will on it, I pretty much get first pick (and at worst, second or third).

Today the Kinship had a scavenger hunt. We met up in Hobbiton under the Party Tree, and grouped in teams of two. We then were given six riddles which led to six different locations in Middle Earth. At those locations was a member of our Kinship who had a clue. All six clues would then point to a final location where we would go to receive the prize. I had to drop out early, so my team didn't win, but it was still a lot of fun. At first the riddles made absolutely no sense, but then we started to figure them out and it was really cool to realize how well we were getting to know the world.

Anyway, here's a quick shot of everyone gathered together. I turned names on for this particular occasion only.

I just bought it, today. And the DVD drive I need to install it. ...I'm afraid of putting it in. I'm not quite sure what the fuck I'm doing...

        Anyway.

My question is what class to shoot for. Clearly, I like mage type jobs. Lore-Master would be closest, except to me it seems like a blm/bst or smn/blm ... with some whm. It's so unfocused. This is just my impression from reading about it... I haven't turned the game on yet.

I thought of Minstrel, but Bard never struck my fancy in XI, I don't see why it would here.

And Melee isn't really my thing....

minstrel is more WHM than bard from what i've seen. there really is not any magic in this game so if you're looking for a pure caster, loremaster or minstrel is your only choices.

          loremasters are pretty cool though.

          Thanks Yyg!

There are no real "mage" classes. The closest is Loremaster, which has a few "spells" but really they are a crowd control/buffing class.

Minstrel is the main healer of the game. They don't function like a FFXI Bard at all. The only similarity is that they play songs. Their songs buff the party, heal the party, damage the enemy, and remove statuses from party members. They can fight a bit, particularly during the early stages of the game, but later on, you don't have to fight nearly as often.

edit: I'm going to be honest, I'm not so sure about the game anymore. It's fun and all, but I'm nearly 40 now, and I'm not even halfway through my free month of play. I don't know if I want to devote any more money to a game that I can max out without even trying (I only play a couple of hours every night or so). I mean, there are only seven classes. If I can hit the level cap on every one in a few months, what's the point?

Well, Murphie, for me that's actually good. The ability to progress without a half-year/year grind is a plus for me. But I can see how it'd be a minus for others who want to sink longer amounts of time in.

I'm more into LotR for the RP aspects, and just the world in general.

It's FFXI that's driving me insane with how much time I have to dedicate to it to really advance. That's the main reason I haven't levelled on XI in months, but focus more on PSU, where I can do the casual thing and still feel like I'm making decent progress.

For those with more time, or simply who love the harder aspect, then yeah, you're right, that might not be such a good thing.

Well, after looking into it all, I've made two characters. I've got a Lore Master and Champion. I'll likely make a Minstrel as well.

I'm guessing Level caps will rise in time. PSU at launch was capped at 50, and that doesn't take all that long to achieve, even with relatively casual play.

I dunno, the easier levelling works for me. ^_^; But I'm so busy lately, the more devoted MMOs really are too much for me now.

I don't mind a less steep leveling curve (FFXI is pretty much as steep as I've encountered, with games like WoW, DAoC and EQ2 falling on various points of the curve), but I don't like being able to cap exp in less than a month without trying. The folks who are pushing for the cap are fine. Everyone plays differently. But I just feel like I'm gaining levels way too fast. I'm out leveling quests sometimes because I can't get them done fast enough.

It's still very fun, and the lore of the world is really nice. I'm just not sure that it's the game for me.

                  Well, I'm having fun so far. This is a pretty neat little game. ^_^;

My only complaint, is that I wish I'd done my research more first. A friend and I had both bought the game, hoping to play together, but he lives in the UK, and both of us missed the memo that said the servers were region specific. Haha~

                  ...so now... I know no one. And despite asking for kinships in OOC and Advice channels, I've gotten nothing in reply. Everyone's pretty quiet. o.o;

Yes, the EXP is really that easy.

I'd suggest asking around the official forums, Telera. There are a lot of new Kinships popping up every day, and some "established" ones that have been around since Closed Beta or before. So there is a pretty good variety.

So sorry to hear about you and your UK friend. One of you would have to import in order to play together. Which sucks. :/ WoW is like that too.

Well, because of the nice windowed mode, he and I at least chat on MSN while we play, so while not quite as good, it's better than nothing. We can compare and help each other, though indirectly.

Anyway, Aerlyn, which is my little Champion Elf, she's level 11 and well beyond the tutorial. In the Epic quests I think I'm on To Avert a War. Caeryn is my Loremaster, she's still in the Intro area. And my human Hunter, Leiane, is I think lvl 7, and also out of tutorial, wandering about in Bree-Land.

I did manage to get a Kinship on Aerlyn, but even so, I've not made any 'friends' yet. They're all nice enough, just I have a time with making friends in games. It tends to take me a while. Sev knows that. :p I was in SS for a long time before I started talking much to any of the members.

But yeah, Boss, exp is pretty easy. Works for me, I'm just having a blast crafting and exploring. The art and music are beautiful. Now if only Val were with me to torment and duel every other level. :p

Edit: The real reason he and I were really set on playing together is finally getting to play in a game where RP is a major part of the game. We rp on XI w/ Sev there, but it's alot harder to swing and you usually end up just making stuff up.

Also, he says that the EU servers have dedicated RP servers. And to my knowledge, we don't. He says theirs say [RP] beside them...

There is plenty of RP on Landroval even without the official RP designation. But it's true. Codemasters (who run the game in the UK) created RP servers, whereas Turbine (who run the game in the US) didn't.

                                No, I'm on Nimrodel.

It doesn't cost anything extra for extra chars or cross-servering, does it?

I might remake my Champion on Landroval for RP purposes then, if there's plenty of it. Because everytime I ask on Nim, I get silence. I've asked in Bree, on my Human, asked in Ered Luin on my Elf, and I never get a tell or even an answer.

If my friend or I imported, we could play together, though? It doesn't go by IP? Just by disc? o.o That's interesting.. might have to see if one of us can once our respective bank accounts recovers enough.

btw: Your new avatar is scary, Murphie. o.o She looks like she wants to punch me in the head.
