Re: New Final Fantasy MMORPG

Personally I'd love to see it in Final Fantasy VII, VIII, X, or XIII's world.

There aren't enough decent sci-fi MMOs out there, and it really seems most likely to me that it'll be a part of the Fabula Nova Crystallis Project, which hasn't yet expanded to the 360 and is expected to. Perhaps a Cocoon vs. Pulse kinda setup? I'd like to see that happen.

I am curious about the credibility of this article however; Hiromichi Tanaka has stated multiple times that his next project is a PS3/Vista MMORPG, and I personally find it unlikely that Square Enix is currently developing another MMORPG for PS3/360 only. My guess is the 360 has been added to the project and it hasn't yet hit all the sources as yet. We'll probably get everything cleared up later this year at TGS.

Re: New Final Fantasy MMORPG

Honestly, I'm not too concerned what world the new S-E MMORPG is going to be set in. I'd rather it not be VIII or IX's world (I wasn't really crazy about those installments), but if/when they do put out a new MMORPG, even if it is set in one of those 2 worlds, I'm sure I'll check it out. I don't believe for a second that they'll limit it to consoles (that would just be stupid, and would cost them tons of potential revenue). I could see the console/PC version's being exclusive without any cross platform interaction...mainly because I know a lot of peeps that play FFXI on the PC (myself included) are kinda bummed about game being stuck at a PS2 level graphics wise. Having 2 different versions would open them up to make continual graphical improvments to the PC version, unencumbred by the limitations of a console. I mean, the 360 and PS3 look great now, but so did the PS2 5 years ago.

I'd prolly like an MMORPG set in the FFVII universe. Not because I'm a fanboy, but more because I'd like to see a MMORPG with sci-fi elements that isn't broken like Galaxies or The Matrix Online. Personally, I'm psyched about the Star Trek MMORPG that they're working on. It'll prolly be broken, too (nowadays, you put Star Trek on the title and it's like immediate crap) but I don't care, I'll give it a fair shake. I've been addicted to Star Trek since Wrath of Khan came out, but I digress ^^

All I know is, I really really hope that FFXI is going to be around for a while yet. I've been playing for just under a year now, and it would suck if I finally get to 75 and start on endgame to find that the game's getting cancelled 2 weeks later.

Re: New Final Fantasy MMORPG

I think the problem with adapting FFVII, FFVIII or even FFXIII to an MMO style is that they're entirely too centered on humes. Another problem about FFVII and FFVIII and FFX is that there are no real specialized jobs, everything is homoginized. The "classes" there are only there in name (or limit break).

I suppose the same could be said about jobs in FFVI and FFXII to an extent, but FFVI is pretty much the blueprint for every JRPG that has followed it, by which I mean the Esper System. The drawback to FFVI, FFVII. FVIII and even FFXII is also that they rob the potential for a Summoner class. Anyone can summon in those games. FFX/FFX-2 (SPOILER WARNING) the Aeons are die. That's kind of a problem unless you prequel it (end Spoiler warning)

Now FFX and FFXII have no shortage of races, FFIV had a mild amount the rest, not so much. I guess you could boil it down to factions if you wanted, but then, if you're following up the story of an older game, that could be difficult.

FFVIII's ending was somewhat dubious and could be played with. FFVII's world, before and after is too well-defined to screw around with now. As appealing as being a Turk, S.O.L.D.I.E.R, or Avalance member may be... no, just no.

FFIX didn't really have much more than a happily ever after, dunno if you could do much more with it. FF, FFII, FFIII and FFV just aren't compelling enough to go back to.

Invalice is the most storied of FF worlds, extending beyond Final Fantasy in Vagrant Story and appearing in three FF games, its the only world in the series to appear multiple times. Plenty of races and factions to go around here. Bangaa, Nu Mou, Viera, Hume, Moogles and many other races. Factions like Sky pirates, judges, Imperial Soldiers, Hunters, Clans... massive potential here. And theres just deep mature political intrigue in FFXII, not to mention heavy sci-fi and fantasy elements.

If there was one FF would I could totally be content to play as an MMO without going back to the NES/SNES classics, no other Playstation-era FF game is more worthy than FFXII

Re: New Final Fantasy MMORPG

i dont think the ivalice of fft and ffta/ffxii are the same other then by name since they have some solid differences being species.

also wouldn't what world this game is possibly influence how the game style is since the different worlds on ff and there respective games all have a different game system.
you have materia for ff7.
the ff8 GF and (i cant remember the draining magic thingy)
ff9 preset jobs.
fft multijobs that unlock by lvling jobs.
ffx sphere grid.
ffx-2 dress spheres (gear = job)
ffxii licenses.
ff3/5 crystal jobs (obtained from storyline)
ff1 and its class change
ff2 no jobs stats lvl up thing
and ffxi with its lvl 30 advanced job system

i haven't played enough of ff6 to know how it works though

Re: New Final Fantasy MMORPG

Ivalice changes around quite a bit, but FFTA/FFXII seem to be the more definite version of the world. FFXII, similar to Elder Scrolls, feels like an MMO already. It's got a big world, plenty of races, a clan system, etc.

And I agree that this is probably the same PS3/Vista game that was talked about a while ago. It was inevitable they'd bring the game to the 360 as well (and good news for me, as I don't plan to get Vista or PS3 any time soon).

FFVI played host to the largest cast of playable characters and was just re-released on Game Boy Advance yesterday, go check it out ^^

All the jobs were pre-determined. The Esper System is pretty much what the Materia System and and Junction system are both based on, as well as the skill systems in FFIX and FFTA. You'd assign a summon to a particular party member not unlike you would, as you accrued Ability Points, you would learn skills for that summon and once learned, you could assign that summon to someone else while your original character kept the new skills.

But in FFVII and FFVIII, once you removed a material or Guardian Force, that character did not retain the skills granted from them, the materia or GF retained them and granted them to other memebers as they were equipped. But in FFVII you did have the Master Materia to make up for that... if you really liked grinding that hard anyway.

It was confirmed that it's not FFXI-related. It could very well be related to a previous Final Fantasy game, FFXIII, or just be Final Fantasy XIV. Before it could have been anything from a Chrono MMO to a Star Ocean MMO, but now we know for sure that it is a Final Fantasy MMO.

Thank you, BBQKit! Finally, someone else *other than me* realizes that VG was part of the Ivalice world. There were just too many refrences and connections to think they were seperate game worlds (especially now that FFXII refrences *back* to VG a lot, too).

Personally I'd drop Vana'diel in a heartbeat to go to Ivalice (and I'd so be a Viera Dragoon; c'mon now, you can't tell me you didn't see that comming ).

A Chrono Trigger MMORPG would be freakin' sweet. God, I love that game, S-E should totally do that ^^

Re: New Final Fantasy MMORPG

My vote goes to an VIII MMOG that takes place before Squall and Rinoa's time.

Where you can join different Gardens and become a SeeD and be able to get dispatched to missions around the world.

With different GF Junction and Drawing capabilities according to which Garden you choose and GFs you have unlocked to Junction with.

There are many ways to make VIII's world come to life, many nations and conflicts worldwide that require SeeD mercs would be awesome and combine many aspects of current games while remaining in Final Fantasy territory.

It would be so freaking good.

I would honestly prefer not to have an MMO made from one of the previous FF titles. If they are going to make another FF themed MMO, either make it a sequel (in Vanadiel's past or future) or make it on another world altogether.

As much as I enjoyed the console Final Fantasy games, I wouldn't want to see any of them in an MMO context. Other players tend to screw that thing up.

I won't play it if it don't gots Tarutaru.

This whole nonsense about the game not being on PS3 is fairly ridiculous. Up until now, Tanaka's said consistently that the game was in development for PS3/Vista, and has never mentioned 360 (although it's obvious that it would spread to 360 eventually, if not at launch.) It's highly unlikely that Square's decided to just now switch and go with 360/Vista, dropping PS3 support altogether. Most sites are taking it out of proportion anyways, as Tanaka alledgedly said that the game would "possibly be on PS3," not discounting the possibility completely. With Tanaka's love for multiplatform gaming, it'd be shocking if the game wasn't on 360, Vista and PS3.

We'll see.

True, though if they did choose a previous game I'd rather it be FFXII simply because they haven't defined the world as much as they have in other Final Fantasies. For example, you don't even see Rozarria, and the area that the game takes place in is quite small compared to the size of FFXII's world. Plus there's some nice plot threads that could be picked up (
regarding the Occuria specifically
).

However, more realistically it'll either be a completely new universe, or they'll probably stick it into yet another reimagined Ivalice (not FFXII's world).
