    Re: Ff7

I was a long time FF fan from the NES and SNES days. I didn't get a Playstation until FF VIII had just come out. I think I even played FF VIII before FF VII. My impressions of VII might have been colored by that ordering.

    Lows:
    - Starts out slowly, with a weak story line that basically amounted to "Sephiroth was spotted going to such-and-such a place, lets follow him."
    - Materia system was kind of tedious.

    Highs:
    - Cait Sith.
    - Red XIII's backstory in Cosmos Canyon always makes me cry.
    - Getting to hear One Winged Angel during the final boss fight is probably worth playing through the game, even if there was nothing else noteworthy.

Whether or not you consider it "the greatest game ever made," FFVII's importance can't be denied. It brought the RPG to the console mainstream with force, and without it the game industry would be pretty different right now.

        Re: Ff7

If you expect it to be some sort of greatest game on Earth you'll be disappointed. Sure, people obsessed over it, and there's people out there who are in love with certain characters in the game ( Tifa) but that's just their personal craziness, you really can't expect it to reflect much on the game itself.

The Pac-Man example is a bad one, kids can play Pac-Man now and enjoy it, hell, most kids don't get all about the graphics til they're 12 of older anyway.

I played FFVII about four years after its release, I had played FFVIII, FFIX, FFX before hand and then FFVI waaaay back in the day. I can go back and play an older game without any fuss, I do it all the time.

The story was good, but not the epic Greek Tragedy everyone likes to make it out to be. But what was disappointing was it was the beginning of a bad trend in Final Fantasy, the main quest was far too easy. Of the last six single player FF games, only FFVIII and FFXII have been challenging in their main quests. FFVII, FFIX, FFX and FFX-2 we all pushovers.

Now, to be fair, all of them did have a legion of those sidequests and some nice optional boss fights. But therein lies the problem - they were optional. If the Sephiroth as as difficult as the weapons or even his Kingdom Hearts counterpart, it would have felt much more epic.

But as it stands, Kefka and Zeromus would beat Sephiroth silly.

Wait, so you are saying people can't play VII and enjoy it nowadays? Or are you saying that you didn't have to be there to see the Pac-Man phenomena when it happened but even so you can like Pac-Man today? Or... what are you saying again?

                Re: Ff7

FF1 main quest was probably the most challenging. FF12 was so easy if it had auto walk, you could damn near complete the whole game. FF7 had some fun stuff to do on the side. I liked the weapon fights. FF8 had the little card game that was kinda fun. The best thing abou that game was the sequence of events that led up to getting the Pupu card.

FF9 was awful. 10 was cool since it was on ps2. X-2, I think they made that one so nobody would ever ask for a sequal again.

Nope, your comment is just as valid and invalid as the other posters. They are both based on personal opinion and nothing else. I've played through FF7 twice, once straight through the story, the second time spending more time with side stuff. It is a good, enjoyable games but I have played better.

You disagree, but not on any factual basis. You thought it was awesome, I've played better, they are both simply statements to preference.

                    Re: Ff7

If you play FF7 start to finish, you will see what the hype was about, cause even now I doubt that even the latest RPG stories (even from the FF series) can hold a candle to this one.
The story was OK, and the characters were pretty weak, imo. I still don't care at all about Cloud. It's a good game, with a pretty good story and world, but I still believe it is held in such high regard by a lot of people because it was their first, and it's hard to ignore your first Final Fantasy. That doesn't apply to all FF7 fans, but I don't think it's leaps and bounds better than most other FF games. I definitely think the stories of 6, 10, and 12 (11, if you count it, and it's been too long since I've played 4) are better than 7, and the characters can't hold a candle to some of the characters of 6 or 9. I will admit that Sephiroth is one of the better villains, though still not as crazy awesome as Kefka.

And FF9 rocked, fools. At least, up until the final boss, which didn't make any sense... but come on!

That makes sense, because some of them weren't XD Square just renamed Mana games and others after FF so it'd do better.

You owe me your life. I still don't think FF7 lives up to the hype everyone claims it to have... i've almost finished ff7 for a second time to see if i've missed anything "special"...doing all of the mini games and sub quests getting the ultima weapons/materia.

In the end...i went to funcoland and traded it in for God of War lastnite and got Ultimate Alliance for my PS3 and the DBZ game for my Wii.

I agree with what a lot of people mentioned in that FF:VII is huge because it brought RPGs out into the open so to speak. One of the reasons I think it continues to resonate is because of the cutscenes. The game looks rather crappy by today's standards but back then it was the shit. I always thought the storyline was compelling but it seemed lacking a bit. Then again, back then it wasn't too common to kill off a main character like that either.

I liked it but it's not my favorite FF game by any means. I would put VI, IV and X above it.

All killing off Aeris did was piss me off, that first time. I'd taken the time to level her abilities and then the bitch dies on me. Ridiculous!

I took care of that in subsequent sessions by never putting her in the main party if I didn't have to.

Anyway, I have been playing FF games since the beginning. I much prefer the story in 4 and 6 to the one in 7. But I can see where some folks might prefer 7.

Story-wise, I still prefer 8 over 7. I can see why people like Cloud so much though. He's sort of the quintessential hero, always perfect in every attitude and action. But I prefer my heroes to be more "human", failings and all. I can identify with Squall so much more than any other FF's main character. It's kinda scary, actually.
