Ok so i decided to sit down for a few hours and see why there's such a huge fan base for FF7...frankly i don't see it. Yeah its a in depth fun game. But nothing go all gungho FF7 fan boy about. It has good characters, ok story....not much to comment about but it expanded to a movie, another game based on a character, toys, the FF cartoon series started a lil after FF7.

But like i said i'm not really sure what the hype is about with FF7. Am I missing anything?

    Re: Ff7

It's one of the titles to reach a larger audience, considering FF1-6 was never released as widely outside Japan/America (4-6 being america). Something like that.... bear in mind hardly anyone in Europe knew what FF was.

      Re: Ff7

For me, it's mostly the nostalgia of the game. I remember playing when I was younger and really enjoying it. Now, I like the plot, characters, and above all, the music in the game.

You are kinda a few years late to get what it was all about, it's like playing Pacman and saying "I don't know what was the big deal about it".

I liked VIII more though, but VII was great.

The only not so memorable FF for me was IX, I just couldn't get into it.

Took the words out of my mouth.

FF 2, 3, 5 (JP numbering) weren't originally released in US. 7 was great. 1 was great. 4 is my all time favorite. I can remember the opening "movie" for 4 on SNES and thinking it took forever. Now that I look back on it, it was very short.

Just stay away from 9 and X-2. You will thank me for it later.

            Re: Ff7

I think the biggest appeal for fans was the fact that it was the first FF to release on PS1. In addition, it debuted with(at the time) cutting edge graphics, easy to manage battle system(the Materia system has got to be the best yet), and most importantly, it had a contemporary feel. It was the first, most "un-fantasy" like game in the series, which up until then mostly drew it's own specialized subculture. The "Industrial Revolution/Mad Max" feel of FF7 helped to transform many a casual passerby--and even those outright disinterested in FF--into hardcore addicts.
I can speak from experience... I'm one of them.

              Re: Ff7

Final fantasy 7 was the turning point for the series and alot of games of that time. With the advnaced (for the time) mechanics of the PS1 Squaresoft (as they were then) were able to traverse from 2D to 3D polygons. yes now you'd look at it and think why was that groundbreaking, but just think of the concept for a 3 disk long game with 3D animated cutscenes, tonnes of animation via summons, magic, weapons etc, the vast 3D environments of buildings, worldmap and under the ocean, the mini games etc etc (the list goes on) No game till then had that much gameplay, that advanced graphics. each time FF released a new game after that they improved imensly, the same happened with the PS2 and FFX, yes many people may not have liked the storey, but it is one of my favourites and the graphics and gameplay , well superb. Now we come to FFXII which they improved again. FFVII was the game that broke the boundries and set the standard of SE's revolutionary attitude to each new game which is continued today.

                Re: Ff7

FF7 being my first in the series, and first RPG outside super mario rpg, changed video games forever for me. Never had I played a game so in depth with such an incredible story and wonderful characters. So being totally hooked I thought it was just an RPG thing and they were all great treasures I had been blind to in the past. I start picking up everyone I could and unfortunatly every one I picked up was lamer and lamer. Thank god for FF8+ cause most companies can't throw a half decent RPG together that can even begin to compare to that of a FF. If you play FF7 start to finish, you will see what the hype was about, cause even now I doubt that even the latest RPG stories (even from the FF series) can hold a candle to this one.

I agree with that. I can't recall too many RPG's that I've played that can compare to FF7. Then again, it's fair to admit that it has a lot to do with personal preference.

I think if the holy gods of gaming (lol) brought the Kings Quest series by Seirra to PS1,2 or 3 they would blow FF out of the water. They had so many stories and sub stories to the series. Kings Quest was the 1st RPG that i ever played when computers only had floppy drives! my first FF was i think 4 when it was released on Gameboy. I got a game boy pocket for christmas and FF4. Beat FF4 in a few hours so i really didn't appeal to me. Easy game play...gaining the 1st 20-30 lvls were easy becasue of the fight simulator you could do in the begining. then kinda put FF off and later found FF7 for PC and played it was a lil diapointed and then picked up playing my Mechwarrior series.

I really don't count the game boy FF as FF games.

The difference between my comment twards FF7 being unmatched and your comment about Kings quest is that yours is supported by nostalgia and mine is raw fact. Play FF7 to finish you will agree I bet my life on it.

I didn't think FFVII was all that great. And I played it at release. But hey, different strokes, or whatever.

The Shinra HQ is my favourite "dungeon" though out of all the games. I'm a "modern" type of person and love nightscapes/tall buildings, etc. Hence I enjoyed that area very much.

Imagine my excitement at the end of Disk 2 when the story goes back there ....

                              Oh yeh.
