    I stand corrected.
R:FOM doesn't though and I read that Motorstorm won't. So until the flagship titles that really push PS3 start supporting it I still think it's a bit of a non-issue.

Re: Xbox 360 struggiling to push 1080p

I'm a current PS2 user, and plan to be a PS3 user at some point in the future. But I don't see this being a big issue for the Xbox 360. Whatever hardware bells and whistles a system might have, it's always going to come down to the quality of the games. No one ever looked at Halo 2, God of War or Resident Evil 4 and said "Wow, this game is making full use the consoles RAM and looking good doing it!" or "Holy crap, look at the number of polygons this game is drawing!"

As this next generation's console war plays out, I don't think the PS3 is going to kick the 360 to the curb just because it supports higher resolution.

Honestly i think PS3 and 360 are neck and neck in some cases. But PS3 will out run 360 in the long haul.

I understand that, but keep in mind that a lot of 360's big titles are going to PS3 as well, namely Oblivion. The only BIG title, aside from Gears of War, that 360 will get and keep to themselves, is Halo 3. I'm sure there will be others here and there, but I haven't heard too much about MS picking up exclusive contracts with big game developers. Sony is likely to keep the edge they had in the days of PS2 v. XBOX in terms of game selection. Plus, PS3 is getting FFXIII, MGS4, and GT HD. If those don't move units, I don't know what will.
I know its still early to plan on what games will be released, but Sony is starting with one sizable lead.

Sony certainly has the lead with exclusive titles in 2007, but that's how it's always been. Microsoft has almost always relied on one, massive exclusive per year to carry them into the next, while Sony's strength lies in a huge number of third party exclusives. Even Nintendo this year doesn't yet have much announced; they seem to so far be relying on the hype for Metroid, Mario and Smash Bros.

Sony has the same third party strength on its way this year as it has since the first days of the PlayStation's success; Square Enix is prepping Final Fantaysy XIII for release in Japan this year, Konami is readying Metal Gear Solid 4, Capcom is bringing Devil May Cry 4, and Tecmo is supporting PlayStation for the first time since the PS2 launch with Ninja Gaiden Sigma. Sony's first and second parties are among the strongest and most diverse, with Hot Shots Golf 5, Motorstorm, Heavenly Sword, Gran Turismo 5, and a new game from the ICO/Shadow of the Colossus Team is on its way.

I certainly think that, this year, the PS3 has the hardware and software advantage. Anyone discounting it for reasons stated by the media obviously isn't considering the long run.

Re: Xbox 360 struggiling to push 1080p

I think most of the doom and gloom naysayers are reacting to the fact that, as of right now, the launch titles for the PS3 are pretty ho-hum. I really like Resistance: Fall of Man and Marvel : Ultimate Alliance, and they both play wonderfully on my PS3, but I could care less about the sports games regardless of how good they look. The only title I might pick up still is Call of Duty 3, but I'm still working my way (slowly!) through Resistance for PS3 and Twilight Princess for Wii so it might be a while before I pick that title up.

We'll see how things shape up by next Christmas as the library of titles for the PS3 catches up. It should be obvious by then whether Sony's move to Blu-Ray this early in the technology cycle was premature, or brilliant marketing.

EDIT: I don't want to give the wrong idea here and make people think I don't like the PS3 lineup. It's very good for launch titles - comparable (if not better) than the Wii, and better than the XBox 360's launch lineup, which had as its big draws Project Gotham Racing 3(good but not spectacular), Quake 4(entirely forgettable), and Call of Duty 2(really the only good launch title). Compare to the PS3 launch titles here:

Don't know if they're 1080p, but other good looking 3rd party games coming this year are Assassin's Creed, and RE 5.

Very rarely does it seem that launch titles are worth a crap at all. Out of the 10 or so they release, maybe one is worth purchasing. 360 had CoD2, Wii had Zelda, and PS3 had R:FoM (I'm guessing that was a launch release title). As has been said, the coming year will determine who will have the best lineup of games and probably give a decidable, if not ultimate victor, which will likely have a huge impact on the hi def dvd format war.

Re: Xbox 360 struggiling to push 1080p

I certainly agree that the PS3 launch lineup is impressive and comparable to others. There's a very small count of terrible games (only one, really), there's a fantastic game that shouldn't even be classified as launch (Resistance of course) and many more solid titles (Ridge Racer 7 among them), as well as multiplatform titles with the Xbox 360's second-gen lineup. And the fact that the PS3's launch compares to Xbox 360's second generation says something.

If sales are suffering (and there's no indication that that's the case, contrary to what the media says), it's certainly because there are very few games available at the moment. March counts the first large-scale wave of post-launch titles and by summer there will be quite a few high profile, high quality PS3 games out there. And the fact that it's selling this well with only one game that really makes it worth owning in my opinion, I'd love to see how sales go later in the year with games like Heavenly Sword, Warhawk and Ninja Gaiden Sigma out there.

The PS2 had the ability to enhance textures in PS titles.

                    Question:

What about the PS3, does it enhance PS-PS2 titles in any way?

Because even if the launch titles are lacking (PS3) there are many PS2 titles worth buying (like XII and Okami if you didn't buy em when they first came out), so if they were enhanced in any way that would be a big plus for me.

3-5 years down the line when most people are adopting 1080p technology and HD media, the PS3 will have adapted to that change far better, while Microsoft is prepping to release their third console (Blu-ray drive included) for release because they'd rather focus on the now than later when designing hardware
                      QFT

No matter when you buy a Sony console, always expect at least 5 years.

People buying the PS2 for christmas have at least 30 AMAZING games to choose from, and off the top of my head I can name FF12, DMC3, Jack and Daxter 3, Gran Turismo 4, Gran Theft Auto, Resident Evil 4, Metal Gear Solid Any....

And even if I were to get a PS3 for 2007 Christmas, not only would I be able to buy fantastic games, I'd be guaranteed a system that will perform fantastic multimedia funtions for the next couple of technology cycles.

But don't get me started on DX10... I've seen one game running on it, and it looks positively orgasm-inducing.

I'm also looking at a very enticing list of Blu-Ray HD movies to watch in the next few months - courtesy of my PS3.

K, here is a transcript of an interview last night with a rep from HD-DVD.
Little info here and there, him saying 5th Element didn't look good on BD (which I have to disagree with, its not as good as later titles will be, but its funny when he sites stuff like Batman Begins which is on its way to BD). Then he says HDDVD is getting the Star Trek movies exclusively. Which is strange since Paramount is supporting both formats. Anyway, the main site I check out (www.thedigitalbits.com) put in a call to Paramount to confirm the claim.
Anyway, I really think Universal needs to pull out the big guns if they want their horse to have a shot. They need to announce something like Jurassic Park pdq, in order to give some more oomph to HD-DVD's title list.

Personally I would like both HD-DVD and Blueray to fail miserably because of DRM, but that's another issue (and on the bright side, HD-DVD has already been cracked). The whole HD-DVD vs. Blueray battle is the stupidest thing I have seen in a loooong time, at least with VHS vs. DVD there was a clear upgrade... There really isn't this time around.

Between the 360 and PS3, I predict a stalemate of sorts with the Wii beating them both.

Wii: It's like you're really sweeping.

I purposefully left my Nintendo comments out of this discussion, but if Nintendo wants to actually penetrate the market, they'll need to do more than sell 1 blockbuster every 3 months to fans and give newcomers more than just novelty games.

Buy Zelda in December, beat it before January, have to wait till March for Metroid. Beat Metroid that week, have to wait till June to play Starfox. Beat Starfox that week, have to wait till September to play Super Smash Brothers. Never beat SSB, but a Mario comes out in December.

Beat Mario, play SSB until the next big thing hits.

Honestly, how many iterations of Tennis, bowling, running and other physical activities can Nintendo pull out to make it seem like the Wii isn't a one-trick pony?

The only game that interested me was the Orchestra one, and that was only for a bit. Developers will be pushing games on the Xbox360 and the PS3 like they're going out of style.

Nintendo being eagerly adopted when they first come out isn't a big surprise, but one thing about Nintendo is they always stick to their plan.

Both Hell and High Water can come, and Nintendo will stay the course. It's admirable, because people have been roped in for about 15 years now and Nintendo can still turn a profit.

Me, I'm biased because I'm all about pushing technology and having the best lasting guns so that you have ample steam going into the next cycle. The media is forgetting that the PS2 is outselling the 360, and that momentum is shifting to the PS3. Other people have posted about how fantastical this year is going to be for BDROM and the PS3.

I'm genuinely frothing at the mouth. Now if Verizon stops lagging on bringing that fiber into people's homes, then the 360 just might have a snowball's chance.

Actually I think the wild card here is the Xbox 360 Zephyr. I see no way for Microsoft to spin telling their 10 million installed users that they have to now shell out another $300+ (putting their total cost of ownership higher than a PS3!) for an inferior product to the PS3. They're looking at a PR disaster if they do release a new one, but they're looking at a significant hardware gap if they don't.

It's kind of funny if you look at it the right way. Microsoft played ALL their cards right. They got their system to the market first, they're in 2nd generation game titles when everyone else is still dealing with launch titles, and now they're on the cusp of throwing it all away.

I'm mostly with Wishmaster's opinion on the Wii even though I own one. It feels very gimmicky - as cool as the Wiimote is, it's actually very limited in what you can do with it because doing anything besides just hitting buttons is very tiring after a couple of hours. Even though the unit is light, constantly moving it around is a major chore (if you don't own one - think of clapping your hands for an hour. Sound exhausting? That's sort of what it's like to wave the Wiimote around for an hour).
