  • Off Topic : World Of Warcraft

I'm sorry to ask about a completely different game here. I got very few bits of info on WoW, made my way over to their official game site to try and sign up so I could use their forums, but in the process, thre is an area which asks you to type in a validation key as part of the process of signing up there, which is really very annoying indeed before I have even bought the game!
So I can't even post any questions at all about that game there until I have a full copy of the game! How stupid is this?!

I wanted to use their technical support area too, because I have downloaded a trial version from their site and I'm having a problem with the downloading process!

Anyway, since I can't think of anywhere else to post, I thought I would come here instead. Well WoW has the same few elements to FFXl at least. It's another MMORPG, and I presume there may be a levelling system too.

If I can just ask.... is there anyone here who has ever played WoW?
I've read that it has a PVP system, but I wish to know if it is primarily a PVP, or do you get to battle allsorts of different monsters like in FFX?

If anyone knows anywhere else I could post for help on that game, then it would be of great help!

P.S. - FFXl Rocks! Good old reliablke FFXl! May the world of Vana 'diel continue to reign for months to come! YAYYY!

From what I understand, and in watching a friend play some, PvP is a big part of the game on most servers, but it also has a lot of instancing against major enemies and big endgame fights.

I played for a bit. The game is fast. Very fast. If you like fast action without having to wait for groups, this is a good game to pick up.

There are two types of servers. PVE and PVP. PVE is just like FFXI servers. You can fight mobs and NMs ect but not other players. In the PVP servers it essentially works the same way, except there are contested zones where you fight other players.

There are two factions, Horde and Alliance. Each faction has its own races and each has a specialized job. For instance, there is a paladin job but I think you have to have an alliance character to use it. One interesting note. Horde and Alliance players can't communicate normally with each other. If you say something to a member of the other faction it basically shows up for them as gibberish.

The job system is locked. What you pick is what you pick. No subs or anything like that. They are much more flexible about multiple characters though.

This is my basic understanding of it from ex-ls mates. I may be off on specifics.

The WoW forum anyone can view, but only paid subscriber can post.

Wow has 4 types of server,

            regular PVE, non FFA pvp
regular PVP, ffa pvp in contested zone
            RP PVE
            RP PVP

The PvE side is very end-game instance base. The first 1-59 level is downright fun, but when u get to 60, and u don't like spending 4-5 hours a day in an instance, it doesn't do much.

You can still pvp in PvE server through battlegrounds and duels.

It's more fastpace than FFXI, and you can solo your way from lvl 1-60.

Meaning you odn't have to spend hours looking for a group to level up. You will need a group to run the dungeons though.

Re: Off Topic : World Of Warcraft

OK, here's what I know of it. 2 of my good friends have played WoW as long as it's been around. One of them installed it on my PC and I played it for a week. Here is what I learned.

My friend first coached me to join an RP PvP server. Not much RP, mostly PvP.

I picked a Horde race, Tauren, a bull guy. Apart from what was said about both factions having an exclusive job, race also affects what jobs you can have. I picked Druid, which apparently only Taurens and Night Elves can be. I got to level 30 in a week.

It was fast. If you want a quest, quest-givers have an icon to alert you as such. When you finish the quest, another icon shows up over the quest-giver to remind you to get your reward. Everything gave xp; quests, killing mobs, farting downwind.

I found the PvP to mostly be an interference to me. I'd be leveling and get a request for a one-on-one dual. My friend put my name in line for a big round of capture the flag. I was told I sucked at it, to which I responded "This is my first PvP, I've been playing for 2 days, Friend..." Then all of a sudden, I was "doing quite well then." It really wasn't a lot of fun either way.

Anyway, I could turn into a bear after a while, then a freaking sea-lion, and later a plain old land lion. I had a million spells, crafting was constant and easy, and buying a mount was about a zillion dollars. (Cliffnotes version here of course).

The biggest change for me (besides jumping for no real reason) was that you could shake aggro like a ragdoll. My friend was getting angry at me for "being too scared." I didn't realize you only had to run 5 feet to make things chill out and walk away.

It was okay, all in all. I'm spoiled because of FFXI, but if that had never existed, WoW would have been quite fun. But, loving FFXI like I do, WoW felt frantic in pace, seeing as I could accomplish so many things so quickly. In all fairness, WoWers probably feel like progressing in FFXI is like watching tree sap overtake an insect.

Just as PVP = player versus player, (which I learnt from another game I play) so what does
                PVE and
                FFA
                stand for?

I'm guessing that the PVE side means that you battle monsters, so I'm guessing "Player Versus Enemy" or something like that.

I'm not really into the whole PVP thing as a whole. I'd rather do battle with monsters. I just find it much more fun. Plus, you probably get drops from them, like in FFXl so that you can collect things and sell them to make gold. (or whatever they call it in WoW)

So If I could spend time on a server where I'm not always having to battle other players, that would suit me down to the ground. I know that FFXl has that team thing where you get into two big groups of players and battle against each other, (Ballista - is that the one?) but at least the game doesn't force you into it if you didn't want to. I'm just hoping it would be like that for WoW too.

It's funny though, because even though I haven't had a single chance to do Ballista yet, I think I would sometime like to give it a try, cause it sounds like fun. But as I said.... it's not really something I would like to get into as a very big part of the game. That's the beauty with FFXl.

Re: Off Topic : World Of Warcraft

PvE stands for Player vs Enviroment.

It's a pretty easy-going game. You'll run into some problems here and there, but you work past them. The biggest problem I found is that Battlegrounds PvP has completely ruined the economy and is dominated by horde anywhere you don't find twinks.

Battlegrounds are special PvP areas that you can access even on non-PvP servers. They're cross-realm arenas so you can meet new players there from different servers.

Twinks are the bane of any normal player's existence. You'll find them mostly in the 10-19, and 20-29 brackets, but you can still see a few beyond that, and a lot in the level 60 BGs. They're super-equipped players with end-game enchants that could easily compete in higher brackets.

You don't even need to compete in the Battlegrounds, though, so you don't have to worry about it. Other than that the only other issue is people who like to leave half way through an instance.

Re: Off Topic : World Of Warcraft

Okay, just a few other questions.

                    Firstly......
Originally, I didn't know there was another game section for video games. I guess that's why I started my post in "General Discussions" yesterday. But I've just had a search around for the correct section for this post now, and found it.
I just didn't realise it at first, so I'm sorry.

I don't really visit that area much though, so I'm going to have a look at some of the posts there afterwards.

                    Secondly.....
2-3 of you said that WoW was a fast paced game.
I'm not really sure what is meant by fast paced. Could someone perhaps give me an example of what happens to make WoW fast paced. i.e. what are a few of the things that hapens?

                    Thirdly....
Do you get to choose which server you start on, or is it like FFXl where you just get plonked on a random server with no option of choosing which one you start on?

                    Okay, fourth and lastly......
I think I would like to try out WoW for a while, but I downloaded the free trial version so that I could just test it out before I knew whether or not I liked the game, so I had to use my credit card before downloading, and now I'm stuck with a game I can't play because of an update problem I am having.

I still need to try and get some kind of technical support help on this game, and I'm paying for something for which I haven't even started on yet, which is rather silly!

Is my only option to buy the game fully packaged so that I can use a valiadtion key when it arrives, thus being able to use thier official forums, (which I think is a completely stupid way of being able to sign up to any forums!) or is there any other forums I could use to get tech support on this game?
Anyone know an answer to this please?
