Re: More PS3 problems
My take on it all: Maybe in five years when BluRay tech is cheaper, the common public (outside of the gaming/technerd realm) will care. But as is, right now, people don't like paying $20 for DVD, much less whatever jacked up amount a BluRay disc will cost. $1k for a player? Hah, working in retail I can tell you this holiday season, people are *not* spending. They are holding tight to that money for some reason no one's quite worked out just yet.
And really, I don't care about those 'Producer Interviews' and what not on DVDs. No one watches those, and I don't need images in my movies so sharp that they cut my retinas, so I fail to see the point in it entirely. The only purpose to it would be in gaming, for movies DVD works just fine. I get this sneaking suspicion that it will end up like UMD. A massive flop in home video, a decent advance for gaming.
My one really major concern though, that trumps all the tech issues I have with it, is the pricetag. If this does well enough, the *next* generation of consoles will start pushing $1,000. And at that point, everyone in their right mind is going to just switch to PC. I love Sony to death, I defend the PSP from every griefer I can find, but I cannot support Sony here, I just can't. I really don't give a damn if they're 'losing money at this price.' So wait a few years until the tech you want to use is cheaper, that or find a way to be cutting edge without being expensive. Nintendo has done it. Sony has done it in the past. But I cannot support their gate-breaching the 1k mark for gaming consoles. As much of a gamer as I am, the day that happens, I'm finished. I'll play whatever I have of the 'older gen' until it falls apart and then I'll move on with life.
