Hell yeah it's a big difference.
Sure, if the console was that expensive, and they made the games just a little bit cheaper, more people might buy it, but The games are the exact same price (actually,. I heard they were between £50-60!!! that's pound, sterling) because of the blu-ray.
Anyway, paying £500 for a console and THEN spending an extra £100 of a few games you like, is really bad.
I got my premium 360 and 4 brand new games for £30 LESS than the premium PS3 alone.

Sounds like you live in the UK. The price differential here in the US is equivalent to two games, not four.

I don't know what the price differential on games over there is, but there's no way they should be costing £50-60 when they'll be $50-60US over here on the other side of the ocean. The current conversion rate is £1 = $1.88US, which would put your rumored relative price between $94-$113.

Getting a 360 for less than a PS3 is awesome. Oh wait I forgot PS3 is a Blue Ray player. How much does a Blue Ray Player cost on its on?? Anyone?? My roommate is getting a PS3 and trading his Xbox 360 in this spring. He would have kept the 360 if Halo 3 would have not been pushed back a few times.

I am ashamed that I play Gears of War now since that person who doesn't know how to use punctuation is an Xbox fanboi.

          Re: More PS3 problems

Current "typical" price of a Blu-Ray disc player is $1000 US. I've seen a couple of models sometimes go on sale for around $900 but it's rare.

            Re: More PS3 problems

Higher end Blu-Ray players can end up hitting almost $2,000 US, I believe. I feel that that right there makes PS3 a deal, and like Icemage mentioned...spending $600 for the system, when you'll spend over $1000 easily on games isn't that bad. Compare it to the PS2 or whatever you have now, how many games do you own? Multiply that by $49.99, I know I have over the $199.99 I spent on my PS2. It's the same case with the PS3.

I really hope this Blu-Ray stuff doesn't flop on Sony like betamax or mini-cd's...hopefully it'll work out and they won't lose too much money.

Thanks to Roguewolf for the sig. :D

              Re: More PS3 problems

The price kinda hurts, but Sony is selling consoles at a loss and just the Blu-ray player is worth the price tag.

In my case I'm gonna pay around 40% more just for the console, and games will cost me at least 30% more because of import taxes and delivery (and I'm still gonna buy them).

One thing is certain though, next generation gaming isn't for the unemployed, with all the games and fees you could easily spend $200 USD a month just on gaming. And that isn't even considering a good HD set and other stuff like that.

engineering masterpeice I don't know about, but certainly, it's a dang efficent subsidiary.

PS3 in terms of prices, really does meld at great lengths to it's 500/600 price tag.

I can understand why it costs what it does from a component and hardware perspective. I'm completely cool with why it costs what it does. However, in the end, fancy as it may be... it's a video game console. It may be the most technologically advanced video game console available, but that's still it's primary function. It may be lightyears beyond the 360 and Wii, but those are the platforms it will be compared to. So, until they come out with enough software to make the ps3 truly worthwhile, it's not worth the difference to me. A crappy game is a crappy game, regardless of how lifelike it looks. I think when it comes down to it, there are more gamers that agree with that then disagree with it. The ps3 won't fail. It won't go the way of the Dreamcast, but I think they won't really start selling well (post release-day) until after they establish the library or cut the price a bit.

                    Re: More PS3 problems

People don't mention it much, but the reason the PS2 trounced the Xbox and GameCube wasn't just market share of units sold; it was because of the depth of the game titles available. There's literally a game for every flavor of gamer on the PS2. The Xbox and GameCube titles were both hamstrung by the fact that they had limited coverage in the sorts of games available (the Xbox library is heavily tilted for action, the GameCube ranks are filled with youth/family and party games)

The new console war looks to be more interesting. The Xbox 360 has market share (for now), and a solid service in XBox Live. The PS3 has superior hardware, and a number of PlayStation-specific franchises that will anchor its available lineup. The Wii has a lot of appeal for non-traditional gamers, which gives it a market that neither of the other two consoles can touch.

With respect to shoddy games, well, those exist on every platform. The Xbox 360 is somewhat ahead of the curve here, as it is just now receiving its second-generation games like Gears of War, but give it a year and I think the PS3 and Wii titles will quickly follow suit and match the production quality.

As with the previous generation of consoles, I think the outcome of this three-cornered console war will be determined by the games themselves, not the price of the hardware or games. Whichever platform offers the titles that appeals to the most gamers will win the most market share.

Yeah, 1st cycle launch games tend to stink it up across the board. I remember the PS2 had a craptastic launch lineup too. Anyone remember X-Squad or Summoner? I'm sure after a cycle or two the PS3 lineup will be tremendous. It's just not strong enough to warrant $600 on launch day.

Launch titles for the PS3 aren't terribly exciting, but there's good stuff coming before Christmas. The Wii has Twilight Princess coming out of the gates, which should give it a hefty shot in the arm sales-wise (since Nintendo has craftily chosen to delay the release of the GameCube version until the Wii has had a chance to ride on the sails of Twilight Princess).

                            Re: More PS3 problems

I really agree with Eticket here, the PS3 is primarily a video game console. Right now I have a PS2 and I use that as a DVD player for movies. Unless this blue ray thingy is going to replace normal DVDs much like DVDs replaced videocassets, I have no real use for it. I would rather wait for the price to come down (waaayyy down)

As for the backwards compatability issues, I'd like to point out that the PS2 is not backwards compatable with all PS games, some of the major and somewhat major games like Valkyrie Profile and supposedly the fourth disk of FF8 do not play on some PS2s. I've never had an issue with them myself, but I have read on the boards that alot of people where having problems with those games in particular.

I wouldn't say the launch lineup is bad just yet, some of the best games I have played were completely overshadowed by other games, Ico, while short, was a very good game. Draken was not a PS2 launch title, but it is still amoung my all time favorites despite being almost nonexistant in stores.

The main reasons I'm hanging back from getting a PS3 though are:

                            1) I am NOT happy about this whole, "leasing the game from Sony" bit. I'll have to see how it works because I've been hearing conflicting reports on how the PS3 works, some say you download games onto it and some say you don't, just things like that. But given Sony's past performance, I'm already skeptical of them and I'm wondering how much it'll cost me to "renew" my lease on my games.

                            2) The difference in games between the PS and the PS2 were rather large to me. PS games while inferior in graphics, typically had 70+ hours worth of gameplay on them, and had a very indepth feel to the storyline.

PS2 games though, have very good graphics, but the average adventure game on it has about 8 hours worth of gameplay, while there are the odd PS2 games that have 40+ hours of gameplay, they seem to be in the minority and have come from some of my favorite game developers from the PS. (star ocean III comes to mind, but even here I think I liked SO II more)

Toss in there the fact that most of the new games I've seen advertised have been for scantily clad overly buxom babes in bikini armor, which isn't exactly bad, but I don't want that in every single game I see, it feels like the game quality that I like has gone down.

Lately when I see a new game advertised in stores, I can't help but think about one Xbox commercial for a volleyball game where the guys were staring at a screen, and their heads were moving up and down, then you see the screen and it's got a couple of scantily clad chesty girls jumping up and down.

Honestly, I don't want to have to look really hard to find a game that I think sounds interesting, it's what has driven me from the majority of the PC game market, and it's starting to feel that way with PS2 games now.

I don't mind a good shoot 'em up game, but alot of the games that I see carried by the stores here are more action based (racing, fighting, shooting)

I like the games that have an actual storyline and go beyond opening up on your enemies with a machine gun.

So myself, I'm being drawn to the Wii, I thought the Zelda: Ocarina of Time was a good game, and I'm looking forward to the new on coming out based on that.

I'll be watching how the PS3 does and the quality of games that comes out for it though, but I will not be getting on right off the bat.

You have the right to remain silent, anything you say can and will be misqouted and then used against you.

I don't have a big ego, it just has a large mouth.

Hey have you ever played a Bioware game?!
They have the best stories I've ever seen in a game. They made Star Wars: KoTOR I and II and Jade Empire.
Just wait for next year on the 360. Fable 2, possible Jade Empire 2, Mass Effect (you want a story? Just check it out ) there are a few other RPG games that I haven't gotten around to checking up, but they all sound good.
