  • MMORPG's like FFXI?

Which MMORPG's do you think is most like Final Fantasy XI? You can put free downloadable 2D or 3D ones or other kinds that are bought at stores or have monthly fees that are similar to FFXI in various ways. Explain how it is similar.

errr no I don't think there's any other game like FFXI. Not the same feel anyway. If you're talking about the addiction and grinding tho, I guess EQ and EQ2 comes close.

FFXI is pretty unique in relation to most MMOs I've played. I mean, I guess they share a lot of common elements, but FFXI has a particular look and feel all it's own. People that play it seem to either love love love it, or really just dislike it. So it seems to really polarize people. I dunno.

Well, I could tell you that FFXI and WoW are two opposites of the spectrum.

Have you played WoW, Mog? I mean, I'm not disagreeing with you necessarily, but it's easier to say "X is the opposite of Y" if you have experience with both. :p

Honestly, FFXI's job system alone really allows it to stand out from all of the other MMOs out there. Also, it's vaguely Asian feel causes it to feel a bit different from most of the traditionally medieval fantasy type MMOs out there (EQ, EQ2, WoW, DAoC, etc.)

I played WoW for a month or so hardcore. The moment I step back to FFXI, I felt like I was playing a slow motion game in monotone. Not saying whichever is better, but their color saturation and speed are that difference.

I haven't. I'm just going by what other people said from their experiences.

                Re: MMORPG's like FFXI?

The first MMO style game that I ever played was Guild Wars. When I first started playing FFXI, I thougt the same way Jei did. I was like, "WTF this game is practically turned based in speed." And I thought that either my video card couldn't handle the game or I had the graphics turned way down. But it's just set up to be more time oriented instead of reaction oriented. I'll admit, the weapon and armor skins for G.W. blow ffxi's out of the water, but the people and playing experience make up for it. It's seems that there is a certain lvl of maturity that comes along with playing ffxi. And the fact the G.W. has a lvl cap at 20 ( I reached that about 10 times...seriously, at least 10 times) made the choice obvious.

I'd say FFXI and WoW are like cousins: in the same family, but not as alike as a brother/sister would be. I bet the Mana MMO ends up feeling like FFXI's younger, more handsome brother....

                  ...just like my brother.

Edit: Haha, I so posted in the wrong thread. In any case, I have to agree with the general concensus, FFXI has a unique feel to it. That doesn't necessarily make it better, but it certainly is different.

FFXI is a lot more involved than a lot of the other games, that's for sure. Almost everything in this game requres a lot of time to complete. And a general rule of thumb:

The more people you need to complete a mission, the longer it's going to take.

                        Re: MMORPG's like FFXI?

MMO's you really can't relate to eachother. There are some differences in all that make them stand out a bit more then others and changes the focus of the game to be good at them.

EQ has a large focus on equipment and augmentations, without the good equipment it's practically impossible to get any decent damage your HP will be low and MP is low. Not only that but also had factions and special programs were you can be "guides" or Role Play as an NPC character for their Dynamic missions (Person role playing the NPC is there just to add randomness and color to the mission for the PC's that are doing it).

Lineage / Lineage II has a large focus around PVP and Seiges. The Seiges are quite a rush storming a castle of an opposing PC group that owns it and taking control, not to mention the ability to raise pets such as dragons to fly around that world (Seamless world so there are almost no zones (only exception is the special dungeons).

WoW from the time I played seemed a much more fast paced at leveling, not much I can think of that made it stand out uniquely much of it's content was pretty standard MMO stuff (Monster Missions/Assult Missions, Special quest, etc...)

Anarchy Online is very geared towards factions and augmenting. Many augmentations in order to get them on you required some thinking of how to shuffle around your other augments so you could reach the required stats for those special augments.

FFXI the biggest thing it has going that no other MMO has is the skillchain, magic bursts, exp chains, blue mage abilities, corsair's gambling, and job system. Outside of that the older MMOs like EQ have already done much of the stuff you see FFXI doing.

There was a time period were EQ use to have Wars going on, something a little more complex then FFXI's Besiege but wasn't as well planned for player's level ranges and actually provided gaps for low levels to get large exp way to easily.

Otherwise FFXI's Assult Mission can be related to EQ's Monster Missions. FFXI's Missions and Quests are not much different then quests from EQ. FFXI's Dynamis/Limbus are not much different then EQ's raids, and FFXI's HNMs are not much different the Big mobs in EQs. Even the Merit system of FFXI has growing resemblances to EQ's Advanced Abilities system.

Many of these same resemblances I mentioned between FFXI and EQ you can generally find in one form or another in the other MMOs as well. EQ has already shown too that their AA system wasn't the end of leveling with there most recent update allowing players to max at lv. 75 now. So similar potential of the same happening in FFXI is still there. One thing that's for sure is that industries often follow themselves, if one guy does something it's likely another will try to introduce something similar (Won't be exact same thing, but similar thing flavored to their MMO).
