        Hmm about what eticket109 wrote:

1)Market saturation: That is true but it seems there's always room for new MMOGs, if a game like WoW has so many subscriptions that means there's still many more gamers left who will give MMOGs a chance.
Even if STO only got 300,000 subscriptions that would a good enough start. And if they make it right they can be successful with just a small part of WoW's population.

        2) Franchise popularity and exposure: This is what I think will be a double edged sword. Since most ST fans are all adults now, meaning they can easily afford an account or two without much worries, that's a big plus because ST will appeal to an older audience.

The minus is that if the game isn't well made those same adults wont have the patience to wait until the game starts being fun (or maybe it's just me) so they would drop it fast, with ST you can't really rely on hipe to keep the game going because ST is very specific about what makes it Star Trek, so a WoW kinda approach would kill the game in my opinion.
ST fans are more set in their ways than say Star Wars fans, and look at what happened with Galaxies. The game started good with a Role Playing kinda aproach and then tried to go WoW. If ST goes down the same path is gonna be very sad.

        About good ST games:

ST: Armada - Great light strategy game, the second game was kind bleh though.
ST Voyager Elite Force 1 and 2- Really dated graphics but the FPS game did get the ST feeling right.
Bridge Commander - Seemed like a good idea but it kinda felt too limited, maybe the MMOG will expand on that same vision for ships and crew.

              Re: Star Trek Online

Count me in the camp of the doubtful. I doubt the ability of the game designers on this project to produce something that closely resembles the mix of combat and mission-based objectives of the show and movies in a massively multiplayer environment.

              (1) As we know, getting people to cooperate with regularity well enough to complete an objective like a "typical" Star Trek episode (in any of the series, take your pick) is all but impossible.

              (2) Generally speaking, Star Trek characters never really made serious progression in skills or abilities. If you look closely at the show, pretty much every character sort of "comes standard" with their skill set, and relies on them without having to resort to new skills (and on the rare occasions where they use some new skills in an episode, they're never used again, which was important to maintain the non-linear timeline of most of the episodes, with the exception of the DS9 storyline). No character progression is a turn-off, but giving players progession deviates from the flavor of the franchise, which is also a turn-off. Lose-lose.

              (3) If PvP space combat is possible, I'd wager that you'd be seeing nothing but combat 24/7:

Captain: "The Klingon outpost on Remius VII is requesting assistance against an unknown alien lifeform. We need to rendezvous with the rest of our task force there and offer our help. Set course for Remius VII, warp factor 5."

Navigator: "Captain! We have multiple decloaks in immediate range! They have weapons lit!"

Captain: "Shields up! Engage! Fire at will!"

              <5 minutes later>

              Navigator: "All enemies destroyed."

              Captain: "Excellent. Set course."

Navigator: " We can't sir. Our engines were damaged during the battle."

Engineer: "Engineering to the bridge. She canna take enny more Captain! It's all we can do to keep life support running!"

Captain: "Well, I guess we won't be making our rendezvous after all..."

What would be hard to do is well... combat in the ship and everything. I would think a ship would be like a guild, and it would be run by a faction of some sort. You would be raised to higher ranks in the ship as you do quest and what not. But, I wonder how it will work.
If you fight in a ship with a crew that is other people everyone would have to do something. On deck they are controlling the ship and fighting. In the engine room you repair the damage done and make sure like life support does not shut down. And everyone on the ship does everything like that so its like a fight but i dont know how it would work...
Then when you get to go onto planets and explore, take planet, make treaties and everything. maybe have ships and people fight for planets...
I don't know its just really hard to think of how this would work. But for now we can all yell "beam me up scotty!" and maybe hope for the best.

So what exactly are trekkies by the way, are those the guys that go around cosplaying in starfleet uniforms and stuff?

What kinda sucks is that players wont be able to get the starship I wanted (although maybe later on?) but I guess that wont matter if the game sucks (gotta think positive lol).

                              [geek]

'Trekkie' can be used to describe anything from the most basic fan to the most obsessed, it really just depends on who you ask.

Originally, the term 'Trekkie' was used as just a general term for the show's fans. As time went on and the conventions kicked up, the term became associated more and more with the cosplay side of the fans and the most fanatical of the group. Technically, the term still applied to all of the fans but when someone thinks of 'Trekkie' their first thought is of a costumed guy in klingon make up or with pointy ears.

As time went on, some of the more conventional fans adopted the use of the term 'Trekker' in order to differentiate themselves from the typical 'Trekkie'. Roddenberry himself never acknowledged the term 'Trekker' though and continued to refer to all Star Trek fans as 'Trekkies'. There is still some derision among fans between the 'Trekkie' and 'Trekker' groups.

There is actually a documentary titled "Trekkies" that goes into a lot of the terminology and culture of the fans and the different camps. It's a pretty funny movie overall, especially a lot of the segments on the truly hardcore fans.

Now that's interesting, where I live people has no idea what Star Trek is so I don't know that kinda stuff is. I guess I'm more on the Trekker side.

I'm not the kind of guy who would go to a Star Trek convention to make one of those

"...and in season x episode z, your character pressed a key on the tricorder that was not supposed to do this, but to do that, it's the end of the world!! What were you thinking!?"

kinda questions or know everything that happened in every episode, but I would definitely build a starship model (never have, but I would ).

I don't even have any of the movies either, guess I should buy some movies or TNG/DS9 seasons to train my Geek-fu.
