Star Trek Online

Beta is supposed to start sometime next year, but the game itself is at least year and a half away.

I think I'll still be playing XI by that time but IF STOnline is made well enough I might take a vacation from XI... Although I seriously doubt it'll be a better game than XI (specially after the Matrix Online fiasco) I'm hoping for the best.

I'm a TNG/DS9 kinda guy so the game will be set in the right period of time for me.

Any thoughts? Does anyone like ST at all here?

Captains log, 1....2...9...78. The ship is suddenly being attacked by n00b klingons and we are about to open fire.

In any case, this looks pretty cool. I'd really like to get the chance to be the captain/co-captain of a large ship and get a crew. (however, with my luck, I'll end up being a doctor. )

I'm kinda dissapointed players wont get Sovereign and Galaxy class ships though. For me the Sovereign is the greatest ship ever created.

I guess I'll have to settle for an Akira.

Captain Omni uses Jem'hadar Tackle.
The Romulan ship takes 10000 damage.
The Romulan ship was defeated by Captain Omni.
Captain Omni's ship takes 10000 damage.
Captain Omni was defeated by physics.

Yeah, I'm being very cautious about getting my hopes up with a game like this one. Damn MxO left me traumatized. >.<

Wow... If that is made right... it would be awsome. Be all like photon torpedos on the borg ship! Borg ship fires back! Enterprises sheilds are down! The gallery looks like the graphics will be nice, they just need to make the game play good lol.

It's an intriguing concept but I don't think it will fly (no pun intended). Its got two very major things going against it right now.

1) Market saturation: Every licensed property out there seems to be attached to an MMO and there are only so many of us gamers to go around. This is of course heightened by the fact that WoW still holds so much of the player base. I would expect WoW to cool down a bit in the next year but not enough to make a sizable dent. Most of the other current MMOs have a population base that is rather loyal to the particular MMO. Along with that, Sci-Fi based MMOs have had a bad track record of late, save for EVE, which is kind of a niche game.

2) Franchise popularity and exposure: Let's face it, Star Trek has been on a downward path since about mid-DS9 (if not before). TNG was the last big breakout series of the bunch. Each of the following shows had it's core following but never had strong mainstream sucess. All of that adds up to the first time a currently produced ST series has not been on the air since the premiere of TNG. Then there are the movies. Most people will agree that the last few TNG movies (esp. Insurrection) were horrible. A DS9/TNG movie may be redeemable but I strongly doubt we will ever see a Voyager or Enterprise era movie. Star Trek has its core fans, some of the most loyal across all media, but there is not a strong enough base there to carry an MMO. Add that into the lack of much casual interest and I just can't see it succeeding.

there was a TNG adventure game created waay back for the PC, the name is escaping me atm...
