The music too. Sometimes, it just sounds so epic. I mean even when I'm flying around scanning anomolies. It sounded so dramatic. I noted that when me and my friend were running a episode together.

What level are you Kailea? I'm LC9 now, trying for Commander tonight. Probably can't make it with my limited play time. Oh well. There's always Friday. I want my Heavy Escort Akira/Steamrunner class now! haha.

I am only KC.... 3?...or is it 4... lol I forgot already, been playing Bioshock 2, will be back on STO when I finish it. (Cyrus@Cyrusnagisa btw)

      Where's my pimp hat? XD

      Good LORD I need a faster ship. I was fighting this Borg cube at the end of the tutorial, which was rotating .. Every time I knocked out a shield quadrant it would rotate away from me faster than I could fly, so I could never get a torpedo in on it. >_<;

Thanks to Omniblast, I'm Dak of the U.S.S. Mountain Dew. I have no idea what I'm doing, but I'm doing it so whatev. It's been fun so far, and I think I just finished the tutorial.

            Re: Star Trek Online

I got to play for about an hour tonight. Finished one little mission and the first leg of a larger one. Each took about 30 minutes. The second one was a huge space battle, which I did with two other newbies who warped in for the same mission at the same time and essentially auto-grouped. Fun times. Seems way to accessible and easy to jump in/out of to be an MMO. Woot for gaining your first level while getting to mix up a few different activities rather than bunny-whacking for an hour.

Haha, you guys are welcomed. Glad both of you are enjoying yourselves playing.
I've been trying to keep up with my friends. Right now hitting Commander 7 tonight and probably going for 8 or 9. Maybe Captain tomorrow or Thursday. We'll see. Good storylines so far. Can't spoil it for you guys hehe.

Let me know you guys need help with anything. I'll be happy to help with any episodes or instances. The only one I have trouble with still is "Crystalline Catastrophe" man that entity is a bitch. Too hard now in my opinion. Maybe I just need to stick a bunch of Beam Arrays on and just circle strafe instead.

                Re: Star Trek Online

Right now, I have hella missions to complete and they're all seeming more alike. I can't tell what I should prepare more for, ground or space combat, but I haven't been in a ground mission that was even remotely difficult. Space missions aren't that difficult either, but they tend to drag out. Sometimes it seems like enemies will multiply as I approach them, which I've witnessed first hand with Birds of Prey, but I've been in situations where cruisers will appear out of nowhere aware and hammer the entire team into oblivion.

I feared the long-term ramifications of losing a starship, but after my first death I realized the only penalty is waiting to respawn.

There's so much to change and customize that I'm having trouble keeping track of it. I haven't promoted any of my crew, and I'm unsure of what skills are better than others. Right now, it seems like everybody has the same ship. I remember reading about how depending on what class you are you'll have a distinctly different ship. When does that happen?

You can change a little bit of the ship every depending on which ship you are in, even if you are in a Light Cruiser. Just go to a starbase and look for the guy in the Shipyard area that will allow you to modify how the ship looks. I think the most it costs is 1000 for modifying the bridge. I didn't do much modification to my Heavy Cruiser yet, I just stuck with the Akira class look.

You can promote your Bridge Officers to any rank below you, meaning if you are just a Lieutenant, you can't promote them yet, but once you hit Lieutenant Commander, you can promote them to Lieutenant. I can only really suggest 2 major skills you need on ground, in space it will depend on your play style. You can always earn more Bridge Officer points. (I've reset my Chief Engineer's skills 3 times already, I sank a lot of skill points into them already, but whatever, I can always earn more.) I suggest Medical Tricorder, & Shield Recharge. Ground combat seems to get more difficult later on, probably because you need to spend some time to upgrade your BO's & equipment. I think it's time for me to upgrade their skills since I've been slacking on trying to put more skills into ground myself. There's a later episode where you are moving from ground combat to space combat, and back to ground combat, etc. a few times. It was a cool episode. It delt with a race I havn't seen since ST: TNG. The one episode where data was stuck in the 19th centuary and that race was harvesting humans. My friends and I did that one last night and sealed their subspace ruptures with a gravaton pulse and some containment fields. (it was fun setting that up too.) That species was immune to physical attacks, so energy based weapons worked best on them.

Here's a link to some Bridge Officer Abilities and what ranks they get it.

That wiki is pretty helpful for those starting out as well.

This person's blog also has some pretty good charts on there, mainly the Ship Progression chart and the Galaxy map. Suricata's Artwork Blog

Also, if you are in a deep space encounter and it seems like the spawn point is heavily camped, it's to prevent people from joining in at a certain instance to prevent them from farming that instance and just getting the objective completed without doing the work. I think they are doing that incorrectly and it will be fixed in a future patch. Thank goodness for no death penalties.

If you need any more help in game feel free to contact me, I'm usually on from 8pm to 11pm.

I kept running into that. I'd warp in and immediately get the "Good job!" window, then have to putz around for a while waiting for new spawns.

That can be annoying. Worse is when a whole fleet spawns around you.

That all said though, I've been having a pretty good time so far. I'm just now getting the hang of doing space combat "right," getting the enemy broadside with both phaser banks and coming around for the kill. Flying one direction and shooting at a 90 degree angle was a little hard to get my head around. Did I already mention I can't wait to get out of this pokey-ass tub of a ship?

Oh. I figured out what you mean when you say enemies would multiply when you approach them.

It's because they use 1 ship to bait you, and the rest of that fleet is CLOAKED. Klingons and Romulans have cloaking technology that the Federation doesn't have.

haha. It does make sense, and they uncloak as soon as you get close enough and swarm you.

Make sure you have Sensor Scrambling. (it's a Lieutenent Skill though.) It's a AOE effect that jams enemies sensors and targeting so they will target other targets, such as their own fleet members.

Man, just reading you guys talk about STO makes me want to try it out, but I still have so much time devoted to playing FFXI that I just don't think I can do it right now. Please keep updating this thread so I can keep living vicariously through your characters.

Haha, I seem to find ships sound better when they are named after streets, cities and states.
                              My mains are called
                              U.S.S. California - Light Cruiser
                              U.S.S. Los Angeles - Escort
                              U.S.S. Rosemead - Heavy Escort

Try it. Take any city, state, street name, and put USS in front of it, and they sound pretty cool.

I'm not sure about Countries i.e. U.S.S. America.

hmm. Maybe I'll name my next ship U.S.S. China
                              hahaha.

I've also seen some canon ships as well. USS Dauntless. Few others probably could have belonged from the Star Trek Universe.

USS New York <- sounded pretty cool too.
                              USS Pennsylvania <- nice
