Well, reviving a thread that shall be relevant this week and next until launch of 2/2/2010.
Has anyone played in the Closed Beta yet or will partake on the Open Beta starting Tuesday 1/12/10?

I've been in Closed Beta this past week and it's been pretty addictive. Damn Klingons and Orions.
Found a cool Phase Cannon which allowed my aft weapons to attack the foward targets. Gonna miss that when they wipe CB data today.

Made Lieutenent Grade 7 only. Tried Klingons for a bit, a little fun. They start off at Lt. Grade 6 but when you get into space your already Lt. Grade 7

I was looking at the amount of posts and I said "I don't ever remember seeing a STO topic!" Its a old topic, no wonder I don't remember haha.

The way the game is made sounds pretty cool and I might look into it around the time of release. I meant to look at actual gameplay footage, but I think I've only seen the trailers of the game.

This is one of the games I definitely want to try out at least but I'll have to wait since the winter is always a little tight on money for me. lol.

I really hope I can try it out since I've been a lifelong fan. I grew up watching the reruns of the original and then I watched all of tv shows and movies. lol.

Stars Wars Knights of the Republic Online

I originally wanted to try and Aion and Champions online but what I've heard about both games since launch has sort of dissauded me from trying them.

I cant wait to try this out, I have my OB key from reserving the game, so I wil get to try it, but I cant find where I can download CB yet.... its not listed -.- I know it starts tomorrow, but I figured they would let us download the game early. *shrugs*

Well it's been started and ongoing for the past few days from Head Start with a few bumps and bruises to Full Launch.

Anyone else play?

I wrote a review about it, and havn't posted it anywhere yet. Thinking about adding some more details about it before posting.

I really want to get those awesome screen shots that the Devs make for their wallpaper, but havn't found any pretty nebulas to pilot my ship through.

Want to try this, but can't bring myself to play multiple MMOs. Already got FFXI and Aion going on, time won't allow me to add a third to my list.

I will try to make this as fanboyless as I can...but I like Star Trek in general sooo.....


I do play, was in open beta/head start and now retail.

I have stopped playing FFXI for this, and I will give my one and only answer as to why. STO is much more casual friendly, and with my current standing with work/class, STO fits in my schedule 100% better then FFXI ever will.

The game is still a bit rough, but what MMO is at launch? Everything is pretty much what it should be Trek wise, although some things had to be added/changed to make it work in the MMO world. (personal shields/Feds using other weapons besides their own tech)

You start out as an ensign and sent over to another ship to help with their Borg problem. But then you become "captain" (even though you are still ranked Ensign rank1 a.k.a lv1) when all the senior officers on your ship are killed by Borg.

You can pretty muck solo most of the early level missions, because if you can not fill your party with other players, they are filled with the CPU controlled away team members of your bridge and/or generic security officers.

Ship battle is fun (IMO) but ground combat could use a little more work. That and there are odd restrictions in space battle, like only being able tot fire one Torpedo at a time, even if you have more then that equipped.

Character creation is robust, and the new uniforms are nice, along with the ability to customize their colors, this does leave people to make "non cannon looking" uniforms though, but its not that huge of a deal.

Visuals are stunning and detailed, but there are some things the devs said would be in the game, that are currently not, like the Genesis system (was to create random systems for players to discover/explore and name themselves. As of yet, this is not know if it will be added later as endgame content, or if they just could not produce the system, and scrapped the idea all together.

Over all the game does need more work, and I think it could have used another month in Beta, but after a month or two, it should be a game that any Star Trek fan should at least give the 30 day trail a go.

I've been playing a lot of Star Trek Online as well. Taskmage, if you need a trial key, just ask. I can pm one to you. (unless you really really want it in your hands I can mail that to you as well. I just have to do it on the weekend.)

It is pretty fun and good for casual play. Since I cannot devote 4+ hours to doing dynamis or anything of that sort, it's a lot easier to get into and get out of quickly.

The main way of camping a boss or something of that sort would be to go through Fleet Actions where you and a bunch of other people have to go either eliminate a huge amount of enemies or a singular enemy i.e. The Crystalline Entity. You get rewarded based on your performance inside that instance of space.

On the groups of mass enemies, where there is a large fleet to eliminate, I've scored on the top end a few times and ended up getting a blue (rare) item.

Ranks are obtained through every 10 levels, level 1-10 = Lieutenent, level 11-20 = Lieutenent Commander, level 21-30 = Commander, level 31-40 = Captain, level 41-50 = Admiral.

I'm currently Lieutenent Commander Grade 7 (so level 17) and taking my time slowly to play through it and read the storyline. Just had to deal with the Undine (Species 8472) infiltrating the Romulan Star Empire, unfortunately due to a fault of my own for following orders. There were previous episodes where I traveled through time as well. A bit odd with the time travel, but following that storyline it made sense. (this was regarding the Klingon and their ridges on their foreheads and how they came to be.)

There also seems to be quite a bit of pvp here. Whether in space or on the ground. I've been finding ground pvp to be quite difficult against similar leveled Klingons, while Space pvp is more balanced. (won some in space, lost some in space. On the ground it was like win once out of 15 battles. Been doing the Salvage and Hold pvp (small))

I'm flying a tactical right now, you can customize it so as long as your in the category you can customize it to look however you want, but generally Cruisers (tanks), Science (Support), and Tactical (dps) have a general look for that Tier of ship.

I'll probably hit Commander sometime this week and upgrade to a Heavy Escort ship (Akira, Steamrunner class)
