    Re: MMOG Chart

As expected Matrix Online doesnt even show on the radar.

    ...

Is it still going or got cancelled already?

PS I'm glad WoW is so popular, if you ask me they are like those magnet filters that draw the metal-heavy trash out of the transporter band, so we don't get most of it

I have heard people suggesting that Blizzard may not be being completely honest about subscription numbers. Their releases are worded in such a way that they could even continue to count people they've banned and who have canceled. I always take their releases when they reach so many gazillion players with a grain of salt.

Well for WoW to be that much more popular then any other MMO they have to offer something that no other MMO ever has. So I doubt that a most of their player base is the type who would consider any other MMO anyway so it's not like they're relieving other games of that many undesirable players.

          Re: MMOG Chart

When I played WoW I encountered a lot of people who had never played MMOs before (and likely never would again). It just happens to appeal to a broader demographic than other MMOs becuase it's so easy to get started with and because you can solo from 1-60 (I certainly never grouped with anyone else except in instances).

FFXI still has a respectable spot on the MMO market. 4% is more than most companies on there can boast, and things are still moving along just fine. Heck, EQ2 and DDO both have less, and they are much newer games. I'm pretty happy about that.

Dang, last time I looked at that chart it was Lineage II, then Lineage, then WoW, then FFXI. Obviously something has changed....

No kidding, FFXI isn't very global friendly, just for ToAU I had to wait for more than a month to get a copy where I live.

But then again I'm not sure SE wants this game to be overpopular, there are many things they could've done to make the game easier to get, to try etc. so there might be something else going on.

I'm still surprised they welcomed NA and EU players.

                Stop page claiming.

I'm sure SE would be delighted if this game had the kind of marketshare that WoW does. That's more money in their pockets, which is the only reason they are doing this in the first place.

But then why aren't they making it easier for players to get the game?

Unless I'm missing something their distribution method is very limited. Since you can't just download the game and pay for the keys via credit card you have to buy the game from a retail store. If you live outside the main countries you gotta import and that takes a while.

I work, so I have no troubles paying, but it cost me around $75 USD getting this last expansion after import taxes and all that. However I don't think many people are willing to pay that much just for an expansion when they can just download another full game for that amount.

                    Re: MMOG Chart

Well, the same goes for WoW, and they don't allow you to just download the game (unless they've changed that since I played), and they have the largest marketshare out there.

You don't have to live in one of the regions SE targets to get or play FFXI, so while I see why that might not pick up a casual gamer, it's not deterring anyone who actually wants to play.

That's kind of harsh. Of course money is important to keep the company alive, but I doubt they're all living the high life. Blizzard on the other hand makes me wonder where all the money is going. There really isn't much that they offer worth the monthly fee, yet with the continuous cash flow they aren't offering any more. The new expansion promises they'll take advantage of all the ideas used in other successful games that they missed the first time around.

It really is just niche and difficulty. I know a lot of people claim they have a tight schedule so they play WoW, but they play it just as long as any other player. Most people would rather forego any group etiquette and hack and slash all day.

It's not really intended to be harsh. It's just the basic rule of business. SE wants to make money. FFXI makes them money, so they keep it going. If it stopped making them money, they would discontinue the game.

I'm with you though on wondering where the heck the money goes for Blizzard.

                        For instance:

Is probably why they've held onto their subscriber base after 30 days. Sometimes, partying is a royal pain.

I'm still one to believe real art isn't inspired by money, which is why there's a vast difference between FFXI and WoW.

Well of course it's about money, all business are, but that doesn't mean every decision they make is based on that.

SE just isn't making it any easier for new (or old like me) players outside the main countries, Blizzard can afford to do that, but I'm not sure SE should.

I think so too, about why WoW is so popular.
