  • Revolution's real name

It was a codename after all. Nintendo's just announced the new identity of the console previously known as Revolution - it's called Nintendo Wii.

Yes, we're not quite sure we believe it either, but it's there for all to see at revolution.nintendo.com - complete with a message explaining Nintendo's thought process, which you can read below.

"While the code-name 'Revolution' expressed our direction, Wii represents the answer. Wii will break down that wall that separates video game players from everybody else," says Nintendo.

"Wii will put people more in touch with their games ... and each other. But you're probably asking: What does the name mean? Wii sounds like 'we', which emphasises this console is for everyone. Wii can easily be remembered by people around the world, no matter what language they speak. No confusion. No need to abbreviate. Just Wii.

"Wii has a distinctive 'ii' spelling that symbolises both the unique controllers and the image of people gathering to play. And Wii, as a name and a console, brings something revolutionary to the world of video games that sets it apart from the crowd.

"So that's Wii. But now Nintendo needs you. Because, it's not really about you or me. It's about Wii. And together, Wii will change everything."

So then. Nintendo Wii. About which we'll hear a great deal more at E3.

While many think/assume/estimate that the Nintendo Revolution (or actually, Wii now) will be weaker compared to its rivals X360 and PS3, I for one am really looking forward to it's release. The online capability seems really promising and the uniqueness of it attracts the gamer in me. :]

Nintendo officially ditched its long-used codename for its next generation machine Thursday, revealing Wii as the final name for the product.

Players will use a remote control like device to play games on the Wii.Goodbye Revolution. Hello Wii.Pronounced like "we" (or "whee," I suppose), the name is meant to emphasize that "this console is for everyone," Nintendo said in a flash video which introduced the name change.

"The other systems have an extension of their current names; ours is a new leap to something different," Perrin Kaplan, Vice President of Marketing and Corporate Affairs for Nintendo of America, told me. "A lot of thought went into the name."

      A lot of thought?!?!?!

I think we will get used to Wii, regardless of if we can control Wii from far away whilest we wee? Aie, oui oui!!!

        Ok.

        I'm done.

        Honest.

You'll only find those amusing if urine the mood for bad puns.

And no one complains about Apple's trendynessism. iTunes, iStore, etc etc. People didn't question the integ. either. We just accepted it for what it is. Same thing with what we feel about Wii. And come on! That whole thing on http://revolution.nintendo.com was very clever.

Clever and very tounge-in-cheek. It's evident that they are pompous batards at Nintendo who use their tenure to get away with murder. But, I know for a fact that there will be a lot of people who don't care about the name once Zelda comes out.

Everyone and their dog supports Nintendo cause of Zelda. Now if only Phantom Hourglass would hurry up and come out ._.

I'm very not looking forward to the weird remote control. But, somewhere I saw on a picture, where the Nintendo Wii's remote control was plugged in in a "normal" controller(Looked like a N64 one). That would be different. But jeez.. I already tried holding my DvD Player remote in a way I could find comfortable enough to play games.

            Double Post Edited:
I can't imagine it, lol. The only things i'd play like that is Pacman and Tetris.

The one thing i like about the Wii (...) is the whole "renting" or buying older system games. I've been regreting the day I told my parents to give my SNES to goodwill and they took Super Mario RPG with it. 'twas my first RPG and I miss it so.

                      Is that a challenge?
"Stop playing with your Wii and do your homework!"
You have to lock your door so you can play with your Wii w/o being disturbed.

                      I'll stop now....
I think they're kinda blowing smoke with the whole "Wii will unite people, yada yada yada." Its a video game console, not the answer to world piece. But as was said, once the first Zelda hits, I'll shut my mouth and play along. After all, I think the Zelda series could potentially create world piece, or at the very least solve world hunger.

I just downloaded SMRPG and I cried when I was reminded how dated it is. I mean, I couldn't even jump to avoid attacks. The recent games on GBA and the DS have me spoiled >.>

SMRPG was ahead of it's time.

                            I knoes!!!! I R N00b.

As seen on http://www.thegamerag.com/archives/2...revol.php#more, a very satiricle video games news site:

04.27.06 - Nintendo has announced that the codenamed Revolution - their next-gen console - will now be officially known as F.U.

"We really feel that F.U. says a lot about the direction we've taken as a company in regards to customer perception," said Reggie Fils-Aime, chief marketing officer of Nintendo. "The Revolution controller, our stance on HD and graphics and now the new name are all a part of our commitment to the video game community."

Revolution was the codename of the next-gen system and a lot of people thought that they would stick with it since it says so much about the ideas behind it. Michael Goulardi is a freelance journalist who agrees.

"It's actually quite astonishing that they changed the name. Revolution was a perfect name and it was also kind of cool. I guess someone at Nintendo didn't care about the Revolution name cool-factor and just said 'F.U.'"

Nintendo is known for it's interesting take on the business of video games and, according Fils-Aime, the video game community is in for something big.

"We've handed them a big home console market. We've handed them a big portable market and now, we're handing them a big F.U."
