  • Japan goes FFXII mad - is this a record?

Reading through various articles I was surprised to find this statistic on FFXII, I have check through 3 other sources and stillc an't beleive my ears.

Firstly SE had to release FFXII on a weekend as apparently the government requested this to prevent masses of people phoning in sick just so they can cue up to buy the game, apaprently all major film and game releases this is the case.

    Now for some figures....

FFXII came out in Japan in march and in just 1 month the game has sold 1,764,266 copies!!!!! and that is just in Japan!!! is this a record or did other games in the series better this?

As far as I know, FINAL FANTASY XII is Japan's 2nd fastest selling PS2 game ever, coming in right behind Dragon Quest VIII by a few hundred thousand copies. For reference, FINAL FANTASY X sold about 1.3 million copies in its first two weeks, and X-2 sold about 1.6 million.

It's definitely the most successful FINAL FANTASY title Japan has seen in quite some time, but it would seem that the current Nintendo DS craze going on in Japan is preventing it from staying at the top of the charts. If you look at the latest Famitsu sales recordings, the DS dominates with 6 titles in the top 10 (including both Brain Training games at the top of the chart, and Animal Crossing: Wild World still at number 3.) Guilty Gear XX SLASH comes in at 4th, and FINAL FANTASY XII coming in at #6. The DS Lite, the DS and the PSP are all outselling the PS2 as it reaches the end of its lifetime in the focus of Sony, but games like FFXII will keep sales strong even after the PS3 launches, as Sony themselves have pledged to support the platform through at least 2007.

Also, please use the search function in the future.
