That's the global findings on *all* F2P games; it could very well be that Planet Side 2 is an exception (my buddy says there's a lot of ppl still playing it) but generally speaking, they have very high drop out rates. As I posed in the comments on TRD's video, I suspect it has to do with lack of attachment.
Basically, because you didn't pay for it, you don't feel any sort of real attachment to it, therefor no biggie if you give up on it. It may sound silly, but it's not and it fits in with human psychology. We have a natural aversion about losing things, and since you didn't pay any money, you're not losing anything. Therefor, with a game you buy, if it sucks/you give up on it, there's usually some form of buyer's remorse that may force you to stick it out a bit more than you normally would.
