Aside from having assassins, the games have nothing in common. Assassin's Creed is an an assassin-themed action games. Dishonored, Deus Ex and Hitman are steath assassin games and with Hitman Absolution, its started thinking a lot more like DX, Dishonored and Thief do.

Just because Corvo didn't talk doesn't mean there wasn't anything to him, either, there was a lot to find within the narrative and lore lying about. I very much preferred that they played him as someone you learned about as you played than have him be all emo-screamo and wanting revenge. Given games like Bioshock, Half-Life and Portal all use this approach to great and memorable effect and games like Assassin's Creed and Mass Effect's plots seem to veer into psychobabble, having a protagonist that doesn't talk is still often a card in a game's favor.

I'm not out to "relate" to the main character so much as be the main character.

As for achievements, I prefer the games that come up with their own internal achievement systems so I'm actually rewarded with things and not just epeen. Fallout gives me EXP bonuses for performing actions it deems achievement-worthy. Phantasy Star Portable/Zero drops items on me for reaching certain goals. Giving me points or trophies for finishing a level like i was supposed to is stupid unless the achievements are something I'm really interested in trying anyway.

Can we throw Splinter Cell Conviction in there too?

I've never been that big of a fan of the "be the main character" crap with the exception of Mass Effect, but I can see how some people like it.

I enjoyed AC3 more because of the cast/plot, and the game's own unique approach to stealth (a lot of stealth games these days seem to have borderline retarded AI however - adding supernatural powers into the mix is just jank).

Deus Ex is a perfect example of this. The game that I liked and was better off with overall was Syndicate.

Yeah, because all of the great arcade games that kept people popping quarters into the machine were based off "getting to the end of the game and beating it", not trying to get a high score.

In fact, humans in general are fans of completion, not the feeling of accomplishment that points and other artificial rewards grant.

Video games started on a pay-to-play model, and there's a good chance that the bulk of the industry will wind up there. Also, it will be on iOS. I thought everyone knew this. We aren't losing the games-as-storytelling anytime soon, it's going to be far more like music-- starts off simplistic but still addictive and moving, then people get more complicated and start making these huge wonky opi, but the mass market stuff gets back to (albeit more complicated, and richer for the benefit of those wonky opi) short digestable bits. But there is still orchestral music, and always will be.

I spent way too much money playing TMNT at the arcades, that's for sure.

Although I was able to finish Ghouls and Ghosts (2 times in a row for the true ending) with a single coin to compensate.

                  For me it was Pacman.

Now, if they provide in-game rewards that's a completely different story. Like "Finish in hard mode to unlock another character", or "Do this challenge to unlock this item/cutscene/thing in game", now that's something I can actually enjoy.
inFamous 2 reads your trophies list from inFamous 1 and gives you extra perks and options if you beat the first game in certain ways or did certain things. You can also earn those perks from just completing inFamous 2 on a second playthrough, but it gives them to you early. I'd say that's a pretty cool use of trophies.

My primary use of trophies and achievements is as milemarkers to remember what I've accomplished, as well as what other people have. I get a friend request over PSN roughly once every two days or so; I use the trophies list to weed out liars and losers.

                    ---

As for what I'm playing right now, it's all Persona 4 Golden on Vita, with just a shred of Dishonored on PS3 added into the mix.

                    Also @Malacite:
Please stay on-topic about what you're playing. If you've got stuff to say about the Wii U, take it to one of the Wii U threads unless you're actually playing something on Wii U.

Personally I couldn't care less about achievements. It's not like I'm dependant on those things to earn a living or anything so I don't get why some people treat them as serious business.

If I don't get points on my virtual dick then I'm not going to lose sleep over it because I play games for fun. If I do get points on my virtual dick then hurray I guess?

As long as they don't bother my gaming then I don't find myself bothered by them.

I finished Zombie U and now dug into my retro stash, I am currently playing Vay for the Sega CD, so far pretty nice old school RPG

Just finished the Omega DLC for Mass Effect 3. One of Aria's biotic attacks is beastly. But the new Reaper-ish enemy is underwhelming.

                            Playing FireFall Beta right now.

Really fun game, very polished for a f2p game. I'm leveling Engineer right now but might give Recon (sniper) and Assault a try later on. It plays without connection lag and is very responsive in either 3rd or 1st person (I play 1st person). It still has some bugs but nothing critical at the moment, and there's still quite a lot of content that isn't available. Events are pretty fun and people seems to enjoy playing even the "healer" class so you see some spontaneous teamwork happening all over the place. Also worth mentioning are the Chosen (main enemies), those damn cheaters can be pretty tough and attack relentlessly so you need at least a few people to take stations back.

Pretty good first day and I still have sat and sun.

PS > Because of how the Chosen behave the game map changes by the hour. Sometimes you are even blocked from getting a quest done unless you take back the region so you can see some very nice fights going at time. Also, I didn't mention the RPG elements of the game. And the game looks good, just wish there were more customization options for your character (like body types) but we may expect those through the store eventually.
