Remakes in general or the remake of Double Dragon specifically?

In general, yes. Unless you'd making a really terrible remake.

I mean, I don't see Nintendo making a totally new game out of Ocarina of Time 3D. Its pretty much what it was before and the gameplay was still got - its just the graphics hadn't aged well, so they updated that part to the standard set by the original art concepts.

You can take some liberties with the original Resident Evil for the purposes of scaring old players again and even new players, even add content, but if another RE remake came within spitting distance of RE5 or 6 there'd he hell to pay.

Double Dragon Neon literally is what it was like in the 80s. Given retro-inspired and retro-driven sequels and remakes are what WayForward always does you have to be a real asshat to drag them over the coals unless they really went off the rails. Perhaps this was the case with BloodRayne since she really wasn't retro to start with or build for a Castlevania-style game, but Adventure Time emulating Zelda II: Link's Awakening? Sign me up.

One look at Mighty Switch Force and lots of people want them to get on a Megaman game. They would probably do it better than Capcom could.

No, but from what I understand the remake of the original Final Fantasy changed up parts of their battle system significantly. I disagree with your generalizations because I see plenty of remakes being approached in both ways.

I got Double Dragon Neon for free via PlayStation+ so I have some input to add to this discussion.

The full game is pretty good, at least in terms of gameplay. There is a huge difficulty cliff, but most everything is "fair" once you figure out what you're supposed to be doing. One thing that the game doesn't really go out of its way to tell you is that you can switch your skill loadouts at any time by pausing, which means you can load up on defense right before a segment where you can't hit anything and are expecting to take some damage, or can instant-swap to a screen-clearing reset power if there's a whole load of missiles or something that's otherwise about to hit you.

The game has a TON of kitschy 80's callbacks, from the horrifically amusing power metal anthem soundtrack, to one scene where you literally walk out of a space airlock and exclaim "This is hard vacuum, better hold your breath!" and proceed to take a huge breath (of what... I have no idea... lol). Never mind that if it were hard vacuum he'd be frozen in a few minutes and the blood vessels in his eyes would have exploded, but screw science because FARK YAR METAL GUITAR RIFF!...

Yeah, it's that sort of game. Either you get it, or you don't.

I just completed Broken sword, The shadow of the templars. It's a little shorter than I remembered but it definately bought back some memories. Even though it was short I didn't feel cheated. Now onto number II The smoking mirror. I wish there were more games like this, What genre does this type of game fit? I remember I used to refer to them as point and click.

You're talking about an incredibly dated RPG, though. That was back when Final Fantasy was taking its cues directly from Wizardry and DnD. The Wonderswan/GBA versions changed the three magic dots to actual MP - the encounter rate and overall difficulty are largely the same. The encounter rate is actually rather obscene in the added content, to boot If you want to see how it literally was Wii Virtual Console still has that covered. I doubt anyone would bother to finish it.

How the game plays and spells work is still fairly similar, though.

Double Dragon has additions, upgrades to power up the moves, cash and materials to collect to pay for it. Its pretty much doing the same kind of thing while not changing up the gameplay experience that dramatically.

Anyway, I've seen very few companies take to making games like WayForward does. These are people with a real passion for making retro games. I'm actually quite a bit disappointed at Silent Hill fans for how horrible they're being to WayForward over their upcoming Vita game. Its a dungeon crawler, so what? If Persona 4 can be a fighter and Sonic can have a racing game then Silent Hill can have a good ol' top-down multiplayer dungeon hack where you fight pyramid heads.

Found this blog on Screw Attack, he pretty much tears the Double Dragon review to shreds:

Finishing up my second complete playthrough of Mass Effect 2 and 3, only this time I threw in the DLC expansions I held out on buying the first time around. First time, I didn't get "Arrival" and "Leviathan". Kind of rushed through the first playthroughs. It's how I tend to play. Once through kind of blindly, the second time more thoroughly. It's a huge waste of times to run through the Normandy after each and every mission in 3, but did it this time around since the characters give some insight and thoughts on the missions each time.

Really love that about the 2 games though (can't play 1). It's one of those casts of characters I almost uniformly feel good about. Even the ones I was pretty lukewarm about at first, like Zaeed and Jack. Zaeed did kind of grow on me...a little. And Jack was just so much more likeable during her involvement in the Grissom Academy mission, which is one of my favorite missions of the game. Part of why I replayed from the beginning was it that it's just fun to me to meet these characters over and over again. It's always like that when I feel good about a cast of characters, like I do with Final Fantasy IX, Dragon Quest VIII, or Chrono Trigger. I have a couple of favorites (Garrus, Tali, Mordin, EDI, and Grunt especially), but generally I like to make room to use all of them...

                        ...

...Except of course for James, who I still feel is kind of just there to say generic things down in the shuttle bay.

But playing both games from start to finish feels like a month-long commitment. And that's if you play a decent amount daily. So after I finish the last 2 missions of Mass Effect 3, going to finally start on Sleeping Dogs. Also, I never got to play Sonic Adventure 2, so I'm looking forward to it being released on PSN in October.

I totally did not prepare for the White Rider in SMT Nocturne. I was doing the optional Amala dungeons and made it down to the third kalpa, triggering the even where the Four Horsemen appear to announce they will be hunting you down across the entire world before taking off on their horses.

White Rider likes to show up outside of every city save point you can teleport to through the Amala Network and there's only a 50% chance you can walk away from the prompt that triggers the encounter. So I have to work a fusion up to deal with the jerk, preferably someone immune to the Expel attacks and with Stone Gaze so I can petrify his summoned allies for the whole fight and he can't one-shot anyone with God's Judgement.

So yeah, good times with my lack of planning ahead.

                          ------

SMT IV's 2nd trailer debuts sometime Monday in Japan pre-TGS.

Bioware has officially announced Dragon Age III: Inquisition and had this to say:

[Our fans] haven't held back, so we’re not either. With [this game], we want to give fans what they’re asking for -- a great story with choices that matter, a massive world to explore, deep customization and combat that is both tactical and visceral.
I'm taking this to mean they gave it to Obsidian.
