First of all, the player's expectations are always for a flawless piece of software. They'd have better luck finding Atlantis. Second, when it's all said and done, intentions mean very little. Things change. Third, players with expectations about somebody else's intentions are setting themselves up for disappointment. Expectations tend to do this regardless of what they're for.

Fourth and finally, you can't compare a dangerous mechanical flaw with a bug in a video game. Nobody dies when they can't complete the Thieves' Guild quest line. They just restart that 100+ hour save file and try it again.

Players wont die but are way more likely to skip DLCs and rent future games of that particular developer instead of buying them, if they play them at all.

So in this case, Bethesda needs to fix the game in order to keep people playing and paying for DLCs. And proof of that is that the moment they stop developing content for a game they stop fixing bugs and move on to other projects. Oblivion, F3 and New Vegas are all good examples of this.

So no, while I love Beth's games I don't buy they are fixing things "for free" out of the goodness of their heart even for one millisecond. <_<

I don't think his point was the severity of the flaw, but the "generosity" behind the fix.

Considering Oblivion and Fallout 3's gag was to "patch" the game by DLC and then move on, I appreciate that most of the updates have consisted of actually fixing the game and adding a little something new as an extra before sticking out their hand for more money on DLC within days of releasing the game. I can at least say Dawnguard was a good time and Hearthfire didnt feel like a soulless cash grab.

I don't care how polished your game is, the way DLC is being handled by most developers is absolutely revolting. I think the only people really getting it right are the indies putting games out on 3DS, iOS, Android and PC platforms like Steam and GoG

Just as an example, in response to a few of Mighty Switch Force's problems on 3DS, WayForward actually ironed them out and gave their customers several new levels in the update patch at no cost. All this before they started work on the HD version for the Wii U.

Renegade Kid just launched the PC version of Mutant Mudds with new content and 3DS users will get the new levels in the weeks to come for free. I believe this was also the case for VVVVVV after the 3DS version released. 5th Cell and Pop Cap continue to make such updates to Scribblenauts Remix and Plants Vs. Zombies on iOS at no extra cost.

Were I to hazard a guess here, Nintendo and the PC storefronts the connected games come out on aren't home to these bullshit authentication fees Sony and MS charge. So yeah, Skyrim's updates and additions do strike me as a little generous. Seems more altruistic to me that having on-disc DLC and not explaining the real reason for doing on-disc DLC. If its on the disc, I want access to what I've paid for, but at the same time I've come to understand why Capcom and EA pull that kind of shit and its seems Sony and MS are indeed to blame.

Fez can't even get a patch because the creator can't afford the authentication fees MS requires. Sony will only waive such fees if indies agree to make games exclusive to them, which often isn't in the best interest of the indie considering they have to sign away ownership of the created IP as well. For what problems Nintendo's process does cause = chiefly their silly download size limit for WiiWare (something Wii U and 3DS remedy, though its weird a new platform is required) - the cost of updating your game doesn't appear to be one of them.

No one's gotten it perfect yet, but I think Nintendo, Apple and Steam might be ahead of the game here. Steam is looking at dropping authentication fees altogether and helped Bethesda build that community that helps improve Skyrim. Then again, Bethesda and Valve encourage the modding community rather than discourage it like EA and Activision do.

As Armando and Raydeus correctly point out above, the point I am debating with you is your assertion that Bethesda is somehow being kindly and generous in going back and fixing the (many) broken things about Skyrim. At least attempt to be intellectually honest and understand that fixing things to a functional standard is an ethical obligation.

The only element of the Skyrim patches that I would agree falls under the aegis of generosity is the addition of killcams (which probably did not take a ton of time or resources to add in, anyway).

              Kill cams
              Horse combat
Greater Transparancy underwater - wasn't needed, but a nice touch all the same.

Considering how broken kill cams were in Fallout 3, that they go off without a hitch much as they do is pretty nice.

Though I would appreciate a fix where my "critical" kill cam shots miss just be misses rather than dramatic misses. Reminds me too much of when RNG's EES could miss in FFXI.

Armored Kill's OK - I thought it'd be better, but that might be because I'm playing on 360 and not PC so nowhere near the # of players you need for these huge maps.

Also DICE needs to do something about all the AA - I can't stand it, every god damn game I get into it's like my team is utterly retarded while the other side is loaded to the brim with AA weapons/vehicles. Can't stay in the damn AC-130 for more than a minute if that...

While I agree with the recent changes to extend the range and altitude of the Stinger & Igla (and taking away Helicopter Gunner Flares), what the fuck compelled them to give an Anti-Air option to Tank Destroyers and Mobile Artillery? Seriously, there is too much fucking anti-air available in armored kill. On top of practically everyone running Engineer almost exclusively, the majority of the vehicles are now capable of shooting down aircraft. This is beyond stupid, you may as well just remove aircraft altogether at this point because against a competent team, you won't be in the air for very long.

                    Sweet.

I just wish they would reprint both of Raidou's games.

An HD collection would be too awesome, but considering they didn't bother with P3 and 4 the chances of that happening are virtually to zero as well.

Pretty much everything else has seen a reprint or reissue except Devil Summoner.

Then again, Devil Summoner and SCEA have an interesting on-again/off-again relationship.

In Japan, ports of the original Devil Summoner were approved for PSX and PSP, even an a re-release of Soul Hackers and a reprint with extras got past Sony Japan. But Devil Summoner was denied by SCEA for lacking new content - because, you know, those of us in the West get really snippy about a game we never played not having new content. Then it was Denied again for western release on PSP, just before Atlus lost the source code for the original Saturn version it was ported from.

Soul Hackers, even with its later version receiving new content, was denied for the same reason, twice by SCEA. Not enough new content.

So now Atlus has updated Soul Hackers with new content for the 3DS and added voice over. At its core, its still really the Saturn version with a higher sprite count and probably would have been panned again by SCEA for the same bullshit reasons as before, so Atlus is going to Nintendo, who doesn't really say no to RPGs on its handhelds (though the Wii is another story).

So if you need a reason why your PS3 can't have nice things like Soul Hackers, there ya go. I think Atlus Japan and USA decided to pass on another round of bullshit. SMT: Nocturne probably only got a break in the US because it was the updated Maniax version Japan got later on. Digital Devil Saga was totally new, along with subsequent entries of Persona and Devil Summoner, so SCEA had no bullshit excuses to pull.

Or maybe someone was just got food poisoning on the days the newer Devil Summoner games were presented and a sub greenlighted them for authentication> Given how the people at Atlus USA are in terms of humor, i would not put it past them to make such an event happen. They invite the approval guy down to Anaheim for lunch and then he gets sick the next day. I think Aram or even Onion of Mystery would totally do that.

                      --------------------------

I hadn't really been keeping up with DOA5's progress, but I did actually rather like DOA Dimensions on the 3DS for its in-depth tutorials and hysterical attempts to give the full series a cinematic narrative. DOA5 seems to have done away with the 13 year old Dreamcast character models entirely. The boobs are still ridiculously huge, the narrative attempts still hysterically bad, but I like the level of realism the characters now have otherwise. Even the clothing looks and moves naturally. The arenas are looking waaaaay over the top this time, too.

I like the new MMA character, Mila. She's cute and her look actually not overtly sexist (again, the breasts notwitstanding, but she's fairly modest standing next to Tina).

Just tried out Double Dragon Neon and then checked out the awful IGN review, written by a kid that likely never set foot inside an arcade in his life because how he recounts the arcade experience is laughable at best. Apparently, in the 80s and 90s arcade gamers were designed with the malicious intent of being incredibly artificially difficult and Double Dragon made its name on being such a game.

Er, no. Double Dragon made its name on the fact it was one of the earliest co-op games in existence, that it was fun to punch stuff and also one of the first games that let you pick up weapons that enemies had been using rather than them just vanish with the enemy upon defeat. It also had great music The artificial difficulty would be like the fifth bullet point. That said, Double Dragon does try to keep things as faithful as possible while giving the player some breathing room. There are generous amounts of health items and 1-Ups in the stages and you can upgrade your moves, which is new but tried and true as modern games go.

The gameplay is stiff, but that's because its Double Dragon. The point of a remake is to show newer gamers how the experience was, not water it down to the point that the people that used to love it don't recognize it anymore. Double Dragon never was the greatest thing ever, but it has a place in our history worthy of note and appreciation. The review was written by the sort of wimp that likely would run away crying from Super Meat Boy and Dark Souls and thinks we should be ashamed of what games used to be and occasionally could be again.

Its a decent game with an awesome OST - and I should point out like Mighty Switch Force the soundtrack is being given away for free . If it comes out on Wii U down the road, I might grab it there, but for now my VC Game Boy version on 3DS is fine and does the job.

I just want to briefly decry Blizzard for being lazy fuckwits who can't balance their games. It doesn't end with Diablo 3, oh no...

Instead of trying to actually balance the unit (as it was a bit strong I'll reluctantly admit - I feel the costs just needed to be raised) they have instead given in to all the bleeding heart crybabies pissing & moaning that the Terran Warhound is OP and have removed it from the HotS beta entirely. Best fucking Mech unit ever and it got axed because Protoss players wouldn't stop QQ over their damage, instead of trying to incorporate new strategies to deal with it (Terran mech is horribly vulnerable to air and Immortals still do pretty well against them despite Haywire doing full damage to their shields as a multi-hit spell; they fixed that too, apparently, even though they aren't adding haywire to any other units).

Fuck you Blizzard, and fuck the Terran haters god damn. So sick of everyone pissing & moaning that Terran is inherently OP and has some magical bullshit win rate as though they never lose when the statistics do favor them at the pro level but only slightly...

Not every damn player has the kind of skills that MMA and MKP do for fuck sake.
