Final Verdict: It could have been a lot better. I enjoyed the plot & the cast, but the god awful combat (worst in the series by far), retarded inventory system, ridiculous puzzles (even on easy setting) and perhaps most offensive of all that God damned RED LIGHT OF DEATH that chases you in the Other World segments just combine together to damn near ruin the game. The other weird thing is, there are 2 (and only 2, wtf? Usally it's a lot more than that) critical decisions that are made very early into the game that pretty well determine what ending you get, barring a few other factors & your final morality choice. Surprisingly though, I managed to get the Forgiveness & Execution Endings which I *think* require you to be mostly good though they may be the "bad" endings as one is called "truth & justice" which sounds like the real good ending, based on the story.
See, one of the stupid things they did this time around that only adds to make combat even shittier (monsters are already way too powerful and take too many hits even on normal - FUCK hard mode) is you can beat them up until they are incapacitated, at which point you can either gain morality by sparring them (they WILL get up shortly if you do) or finish them off lowering your score. The few actual dialogue options you get in this game (again, there's usually at least 5 in these games or the equivalent in other forms of decision making IIRC) have a much larger impact over all, but by the time I was done I'd killed quite a lot of monsters. Largely because there are a number of areas you need to explore, and well it's rather hard to do that when your ass is hounded by enemies.
One of the sidequests, "The Bank" pretty well requires you kill them and it spawns horde after horde. It's a shame, because everything else is very well done (still have no clue about that mysterious mail man though WTF is his deal?) but the shitty combat, the red death, and the annoying puzzles serve to drag down what could have been a great game - it still wouldn't be at SH2's level, but a good 2nd.
Any idea if Amazon is giving Armored Core V Release-Date Delivery? I've heard some people have gotten emails regarding the matter but I never received one, nor see the option. :<
I just don't think I can get excited about Diablo III when I can put games like that in my pocket now or get them even cheaper on PC in Torchlight II, which is also coming to XBLA in time.
3DS has Heroes of Ruin in a few months, which is looking really nice, has online play, voice chat, and fairly nice levels of character customization. There's also the Monster Hunter games between PSP and 3DS as well as PSO2, which has been confirmed to get a Vita version (i.e. I can now give a damn about PSO2 and Vita a little more) as well as Warrior's Lair.
I just feel like the world as moved on from playing this kind of game only on PC. If Blizzard gets around to a console version of Diablo III I might be driven to care, as it might also require them to eschew dippy shit like online-only DRM and the AH. Even so, I can take other games in this genre with me and play them anywhere. I guess you could say Monster Hunter and Phantasy Star spoiled me on the idea of being able to take portable grindfests with me anywhere. Its actually rather amazing how much more you get done with those games when you're not tethered to playing them at home.
Decided to give Sonic Triple Trouble a shot off Nintendo eShop since its the first of three Game Gear offerings on the service. Dragon Crystal looked... well, it looked like ass even for its time. Shinobi I'm passing on since there's a 3DS Shinobi.
I never had a Game Gear and when I did get my hands on one, I only ever got to play Columns on it. Not that that's a bad thing, mind you, it was a good game.
Sonic's surprisingly good for what it had to work with at the time, but I'm more impressed with how the emulation is set up. What Nintendo offers up is fine, but Sega kicked it up a notch to where you can get its original resolution, a fairly nice "Normal" option and widescreen. The "original" also puts a portion of the Game Gear on the screen and kicks the 3D feature on, similar to the Game Boy emulator. You also have the option for optimal performance or original with all the slow-down you'd expect. There's even an option to turn LCD blur on if one desires such a thing. You can remap buttons, too. It also maintains the save states Nintendo has dubbed "restore points" so you don't have to worry about the saving your progress as these games did or did not allow you to do.
Here's hoping we see a few more in the weeks to come.
Kinda wish I had gotten Blaster Master or Punch-Out! instead (its the Mr. Dream version) instead, but I can wait a bit on those since I'm getting 3D Classic Kid Icarus this week with Uprising.
I have a GG and Sonic TT is one of the few I am missing, I have Sonic 1/2/choas, but need the others on GG/SMS
Knee deep into Tales of Graces, loving it, also picked up Armored Core V and Resident Evil ORC, loving both as well..... good lord with all this, I honestly could care less about FFXIV right now ;p
