  • Re: What games are you currently playing?

Sony forces the online pass across the board now where multiplayer is concerned. It won't be long before the go for single-player content, too. It amazes me that Sony and EA have the audacity to pretend they embrace digital distribution, but really just fear it and use online functionality to force retail success for what little ground it gains them.

MS doesn't do it because they have Live. Nintendo doesn't do it because of a think called dignity. Nintendo might not have 100% faith in their IPs doing well in the west, but I'd rather not have a game than have a game with the online pass.

Funny how that works. I won't be having Kingdoms of Amalur, but I will be having Xenoblade. Additionally, Skyrim's still got stuff I haven't seen and expansions on the way.

My ps3 is upstairs in my room, and my wireless router si downstairs. When there are updates available, my PS3 lets me know they are available and ready for download, but when I start to download, it freezes up at like 10% completion... Any idea on how to fix this or make it better besides taking it downstairs and plugging it directly in to the router?

No, they do not. The launch 20GB model does not have built in Wifi.

mmm locks up at 10%? might need a wireless repeater to help boost that signal, other then that, yeah plug it in directly.

                1) Get a better router

                2) Wire the damn thing.

Seriously, my PS3 gets a 99% signal strength in wireless mode and yet still only carries half the speed compared to when I plug it in. I don't know if that's just bad design by Sony or what, but it's pretty telling IMO.

no it is the nature of wireless all together, I don't like it myself, all my systems are wired.

So apparently there's another rumor coming out of one of Kotaku's sources that the new Xbox will have a feature that locks out used games.

Doesn't seem terribly likely to me, but if that's true then... WTF.

If any console took that stance, no retailer would stock it. Period.

And right now not even Sony or MS have the digital distribution structure to justify it, practically never having digital releases to go with retail for consoles - PSP does it, 3DS may do it soon and Nintendo's looking into it for Wii U. Big publishers love to tout those first week numbers too much and retail is still the only place they get the instant gratification they like. They don't like downloads they can't track.

I never said it was likely or smart, just that it's another rumor that's flying around.

I sincerely hope it isn't true, though there's definitely a case to be made for it.

MS doesn't pull the paranoid online pass crap because they have Live. Then there's the fact MS' updates seem to run opposite of Sony's. Sony began to limit USB drive functions, MS added more. Sony has a one-account system, MS has personal profiles. Sony prevents you from sharing content, MS at least lets that content be shared on the home console. Sony forced installs, MS made them optional.

Sony backpedals so hard it makes Nintendo start to look progressive and bold. If fact, aside from the "no class action" thing, pretty much every platform moves in a progressive direction aside from Sony and EA. Well, if you can call Origin a platform. I don't.

Yeah, the moment Kutaragi-san stepped down Sony started going backwards.

Well, the rest of Sony already was backwards. His departure just gave them the excuse to be even more backward.

                                Slow down, Tex.

Sony's DRM isn't any worse than Microsoft's, it's just different. It's better in some ways, worse in others, but right about now, they're roughly equal. Sony lets you authorize two PS3s per piece of DLC. Microsoft lets you authorize only one, but temporarily clears any unit you are currently logged in on with the account that purchased the content. With Sony's setup, you can own two PS3s, stay offline or online, and play and operate both consoles simultaneously. With Microsoft's, you can only play the one console offline, but you can have one more console active online. On the other hand, you can own five 360s and play any of them while logged into XBL, as long as none of them are on at the same time (since you can only log in from one console at a time).
