  • Re: What games are you currently playing?

Dark Souls is pretty open, its just very intent and successful at killing you. The only barriers to exploration are the mist barriers that imply a boss, but once out of the prison I pretty much had three different directions I could plausibly go in. Its not advisable to head down to Blighttown first thing, but if you want to go about it that way, you can for all the hell you'll have to endure for that choice.

But what you're really saying is the story doesn't appeal to your personality. Its expository writing, sure, but aside from the opening cinematic its pretty much just layers and not forced. Its not like its FFXIII where they constantly spout gibberish you don't even begin to understand until about 30 hours in, if that.

So the Toatha Dehoen (or whatever its spelled) are basically the dark elf version of the Thalmor from TES, out to kill all mortals before they can have a god of their own. You are the chosen one to save the other races. Par for course in high fantasy so far. Now on to the layers. I don't know much about RK Salvatore, its a bit too flowery, but its not really a stretch for me.

At least for all the gibberish and Bioware-ish cutscenes there's a world open enough for exploration rather than a blatant set of rails with story flavoring.

      Currently playing:
      League of Legends
Star Wars: The Old Republic (sort of, that game sucks and I haven't logged in in over 2 weeks)
Battlefield 3 (super amazing, despite all the flaws, it's still really fun 80 hours later)
The King of Fighters XIII (training to play at NorCal Regionals and Evo 2012)

      Looking forward to:
      Soul Calibur V
Kingdoms of Amalur (I just found out about this yesterday, it looks sweet. Gonna try the demo this week, I think)

I was just sitting here and never really realized the how detailed the Shadow of the Colossus theme for the PS3 XMB was.

Now I can tell you about that time I saw a deer in it.

Seriously, it just pops up from time to time and comes in at different angles.

The demo for Kingdoms of Amalur is pretty sweet - it feels like everything Fable should have been.

I have defected to the Xbox side of things. I just realized I was bored with PS3 and also kinda tired of being the only one in my circle of friends that had a PS3.

Oh, and that whole thing where half ... who am I kidding... most PS3 games aren't in 1080p? That too.

I I picked up Skyrim for familarity - man, it looks so much better now - and Lost Odyssey. I did give up a lot of downloadable games, but I figure I'm gonna get a used PSP or a Go later in the year to at least have my PSP/PSX games back.

It is sad I didn't finish FFXIII.... but I came to the conclusion I seriously didn't want to anyway. FFXIII-2 demo ruined it for me by being ten times better. I'll just Youtube the rest of the cutscenes and pretend I finished it.

There's only one cutscene in FFXIII that's worth watching anyway, right before the end of the game. Otherwise, I'm not really sure why you bothered to swap consoles; the content is more or less identical across the board, minus a handful of exceptions (exclusives, plus a small number of titles that are better on one or the other). I suspect FFXIII-2 on Xbox 360, if you do end up getting it on that platform, will still suffer from being on the platform the way FFXIII did.

Skyrim is undoubtedly better on Xbox 360, however (mostly because Bethesda did lead programming on that console and couldn't create a decent port if their collective lives depended on it). The only reason Oblivion on PS3 works as well as it does is because it WASN'T ported by Bethesda.

Key reason: Every time I get a multiplayer game on PS3, I quickly come to regret it.

But here's a more detailed list:

                  It's where my friends are.
It's where the fighter community is.
People actually use headsets and wired ones at that.
                  They actually talk, too.
                  Super Meat Boy
                  More indie games.
Patches come sooner to 360, DLC in general as well.
                  Most games scale to 1080p
                  It doesn't have Home.

That's about the size of it. And oh god does Skyrim look better.

I refuse to play FF on Xbox, just out of (a silly) principal

Also Blu Ray ftw - F disc swapping. Generally if something is multiplatorm, I'll get it for 360 - especially shooters (I regret getting BF3 for PS3 now somewhat but I still say it looks and handles better on PS3 over 360. The community's just not there though) unless there's a compelling reason to get it for PS3, or if it's just one of those franchises I like better on PS over Xbox (DMC, FF, MGS etc.).

                    • Re: What games are you currently playing?

It really sucks Sony didn't do what they could've with PS3 and Blu-ray capabilities in order to cut costs. But considering it was the first affordable Blu-ray player I let it slide at the time.

                      Examples:
                      1) Blu-ray = Uncompressed
This is a major advantage for the PS3 since you can evade compression. And no matter how much compression defenders say Uncompressed will always be superior in every single way as long as transfer rates and RAM amount are sufficient. Unfortunately PS3 BD data transfer rates suck very much, being a first gen-ish reader and all. But even though it didn't as big an impact as the PS2 did with the DVD at least Blu-ray is here to stay for some time.

                      2) Cell
Don't need to say much about it. Unfortunately such a puny ram/vram pretty much negated Cell's awesomeness. /facepalm

                      3) Backwards compatible
                      /YAY. Unfortunately... slim.

                      4) Etc.

Hopefully the PS4 will not only be backwards compatible but also have a much faster Blu-ray reader and way more ram. If it doesn't then Sony can GTFO the console business.

PS > And please, Sony, do not under any circumstances add Regional restrictions to the PS4. The past has proven they accomplish nothing and the lack of restrictions meant at least 1000 USD of Japanese PS3 game sales just from this otaku wannabe alone.

The original PS3, as Kutaragi wanted it to be, would have cost consumers another $300 at retail. No one was going to pay that, no matter how amazing the games might have been.

What killed the PS3 and made it downsize to the Slim was the economic crisis. The PS3 was just at the wrong place at the wrong time. Also, while a faster blu-ray would've been too expensive at the time, 1GB ram wouldn't have cost even 50 bucks more.

And if the PS3 hadn't been rushed the way it was when investors panicked about the Xbox's early release it would've done much better. But they screwed up what could've been a proper successor to the PS2 legacy.

Now this next gen, it seems it will be the same again, but with Nintendo in Microsoft's place. Sony said they are still sticking with their "10-year plan"

Whoah, Sony shows a slight hint of a common sense for once.

There is no point whatsoever on releasing a new PS system in the next couple of years. And if Sony plays their cards right it could simply take the Wii's place as the most affordable console in the market. Not to mention outside of needing more memory the PS3 hardware is in a very good position to endure the blunt force of a Nintendo/Xbox next gen release.

That's the thing about the PlayStation, it usually gets much better as time passes and developers start taking advantage of Kutaragi-san's vision. It happened twice before and recent PS3 games show the same tendency. But the same cannot be said of Nintendo since they bet on already outdated hardware (albeit cheap) tech for their consoles. And Xbox is just too PC-ish to endure more than a few years of age.

Too bad they removed backwards compatibility, it would've given the console a few extra years of longevity for a very marginal extra cost.

That's bullshit and you know it. The higher price point, much larger install base for Xbox (and more importantly, Xbox Live) and multi-platform games being developed for 360 first and then shoddily ported to PS3 was what hurt it for so long.
