  • Re: What games are you currently playing?

I was sort of interested in the Red Zone edition, but after hearing about the butchering I lost any interest I had in the game.

The way they released it doesn't make much sense to me. But then again it wasn't Grasshopper developing it anyway.

got my arcade stuff up and running.... kind of, so me and my nephew played Captain America, X-Men, and Mega Man Power Battle 2

Other then that, I have dabbled in Left 4 Dead 1/2 and Killzone 3 (yes with move and the gun thingy)

It lets people who never played the Wii version get a chance to experience what is a pretty good game, if nothing else. That might not mean much to you since you've already played the Wii version of NMH1 and NMH2, but considering how few copies of the games were sold overall on the Wii, that's not really that many people that are like you (I'd say me too, but I never got a chance to play NMH2).
I don't think it being on Wii was a symptom of its sales, particularly given between PS3 and 360, Shadows of the Damned sold even less combined than either installment of NMH separately on the Wii.

Also, trophies are, if anything, anti-NMH. NMH is a gamer's game, not a "modern" gamer's game.

I'm also disappointed they included them in Ico/SotC Collection as the totally spoil the mood. Sony really needs to let me turn trophy notifications off specifically rather than just universal notifications off.

I might want to know if my friends are online, but I don't need little trophy notices breaking my immersion in a game who's presentation thrives on being absolutely seamless.

I don't think that's fair, really. Gaming companies have always done whatever benefits their bottom line (and to whatever extent artistic vision can be accomodated, that as well). In the grand scheme of things, NMH on PS3 isn't really a terrible thing compared to a lot of the corporate douchebaggery we've seen of late (Ubisoft's always-online DRM, Capcom's loltastic $5 DLC characters, Freemium games out the yin-yang, etc.).
Again, this content is already fully available in the Wii Versions, the character strip-teases aside. None of it was necessary for this port.

All add-on content is a load of shit. Proper expansions are one thing. If this were Lost and Damned/Undead Nightmare sort of stuff I'd be fine with that. This is just a cheap cash grab and nothing more and some developers are starting to realize their customers are well aware of this.

Hell, one of the companies that started this nonsense is starting to back away. I was very happy to hear ESV: Skyrim will not be doing a repeat of horse armor and Knights of the Nine and instead favoring developing something more like Bloodmoon of Shivering Isles expansions instead.

Because, really, all the Fallout 3 add-ons ever did was cover up the bug and errors of the previous add-on and added very little in the way of content for a the asking price.

But NMH was done years ago, why even do add-on DLC? Its just a complete scam and I don't think its something Suda would have wanted for his games given he has a pretty traditional view of them. I lost a bit of respect for Tak Fuji and his choices with this port.

Say what? Are we talking about the same game here? NMH even lampoons itself with the high score "leaderboard" updating your progress after every story mission. How are trophies in any way shape or form out of flavor with this motif?

You're going to have to have to do a better job at explaining what you think the distinction is between a "gamer's game" and a "modern game" is.

I'm not talking about the throwaway add-on features (which really are throw-away). I'm talking about people who either don't own a Wii or do and never bought the original game. Is that a large cross-section of people? I don't know. But complaining about a new console release having more content rings pretty hollow when there are people who never experienced that content in the first place, due to either a lack of opportunity or visibility.

Gamer's game: One that includes a motivation to play intrinsic to the game itself.

Modern game: Played because everybody else plays it.

Not fact, but my best guess.

Picked up Deus Ex: Human Revolution as early as I could.

Its pretty much everything you'd want from the original DX, but everything is also tremendously improved, and Normal is actually pretty hard. If I have one complaint it would be death comes too swift that and I still feel like I didn't have enough time before work today to play it. Still haven't gotten to do any augmentations yet.

I got the Augmented Edition which comes with an hardcover artbook and "making of" disc that also has a motion comic based on the DC comics stuff.

Also picked got my Devil Survivor. Oddly the music volume is quieter in this version, I guess to accomodate for the voice acting this time around.

I've only met like 3 people ever who won't touch a game if there aren't trophies/achievements.

Also, I would like to rescind my earlier praise for Heroes 6. Fuck you Ubisoft, fuck you hard. I basically had to pay for the game in full, because even though it's a pre-order on their website, you can't just drop a $5 deposit like with EB. They don't ship physical copies anymore, so it's digital download only for PC games which of course are non-refundable...

And all because they royally fucked up and failed to hand out any beta keys at all to all my local shops. I called every single retailer that's going to carry it and they all told me they never got the keys for the people pre-ordering, nor did they ever get any explanation out of Ubisoft.

So now I'm stuck with a game that, after fiddling with it a bit more, I actually rather dislike overall. Some of the changes are great, like cutting down the strategic resources to just Gold, Ore Wood & Gems (removing Mercury, Gems & Sulfur).

But the heroes are all generic, the Dynasties shit over-complicates things, the skill system is RETARDED (will elaborate on this point more in a bit) but most offensive of all, to me, was what they did to the Necromancer faction. They went and fucked with the one thing that has been sacred throughout the entire series.

Now, instead of raising additional troops post-combat, they've basically changed Necromancy to a partial-action that your Hero can execute during combat when one of your units is active. You gain Necromancy Points from killing enemy creatures which you can use more or less as the old Raise Dead spell, only it uses up all your points at once and the overall effect is just plain shit compared to the old raise dead spell itself. They also severely nerfed Liches & Vampires, arguably the backbones of any undead army in a heroes game.

Vampires now only drain 20% of the damage they deal instead of 100, and can be retaliated against when attacking. Liches have lost their AoE from their ranged attack, and have instead been given some useless fucking ability that allows your other troops to heal themselves when attacking the marked target (I say useless because the Lich itself doesn't benefit and it only lasts for 1 turn. Liches still deal considerable ranged damage so it's a rather shitty tradeoff)

So in short, they nerfed my favorite faction completely to shit. Adding insult to injury is the poorly implemented Blood & Tears system in tandem with the new Skill System that functions very much like Diablo II's skill trees - only every hero has access to the same skills and they are all the same.

This is one of the few things that they got right in V that made it stand out - in V each of the seconary skills changed depending on your faction, giving desperately needed variety to the series. They even removed the mage guilds and instead you learn your spells by spending your hard earned ability points when you level up.

... there's just so much wrong with the game, I am beyond pissed that I ended up having to pay full price for something I really don't want when I should have only had to drop $5 (which I could have promptly cancelled and put towards a different game).

TL;DR - Ubisoft just made my boycott list alongside Capcom. Fucking frogs.

Wow, DX:HR doesn't really skimp on these quests. They're multi-tiered, full of worthwhile bonuses for doing them and a lot of them seem just as substantial as the main story missions so far.

I'm on a no-kill run so far, which seems only possible after the tutorial section. There are a sufficient number of non-lethal options so far.

I'm also working on a no-kill run on Give Me Deus Ex difficulty. You're absolutely right about the number and depth of the side quests. This game is unbelievably good so far.

I did a quick experiment on easy difficulty for about 10 minutes trying to get past the intro with no kills, and it can be done, but it's very tedious and you can't save during the intro. It's likely to be nearly impossible on Give Me Deus Ex difficulty. There's too many guys and you just have no tools to avoid detection, no radar, and no ability to take any of them down non-lethally. If that ruins my Pacifist trophy I'll have to play through again on easy (not that this is necessarily a bad thing).

Aside from the side quests, the hacking minigame is so much fun it's scary. I spent a few hours last night sneaking around and hacking every single thing in the Detroit police station that I could access (basically every door and terminal except the ones in the Atrium where there are a dozen policemen waiting to gun you down if you even look like you're going to hack something).

I've discovered four non-lethal weapons thus far: tranquilizer rifle, stun gun, P.E.P. shockwave gun, and concussion grenades. I started with the tranquilizer rifle, but the stun gun is pretty amazing because of its instant-KO ability and also its temporary stun power against machines.

Regenerating health is a non-issue. There are too many other factors, besides health and its regeneration, that determine how long you'll live or how quickly you'll die.

Coddling players is still coddling players. It was created for people with low self esteem that don't continue playing gamws where they can die if they die to much (meaning it probably wasn't a game for them in the first place) Death may come more quickly with regenerating heath, but its should come far, far more quickly than it does in most games (looking at you CoD, CoDeneye).

I'm OK with how Deus Ex: Human Revolution handles it, for example, because death comes really, really fast and that reinforces how vuMany things can kill you in a sort of Demon's Souls fast way.

But I'm sorry, you can't shrug off a shotgon blast. For all this obsession with realism you'd think the last thing they'd do is add perks a shotgun at point blank would be a dealcloser and strafing with an AK47 would be wildly innaccurate, but thanks to regenning health and perks this is often not the case.

And furthermore, there are other ways to soften the blow. Just stepping outside of CoD for a moment, you have games like Donkey Kong Country Returns and Catherine which are incredibly generous with checkpoints and retries/lives to the point death should be something you just laugh off and not get so frustrated with.

And they offer options for lesser-skilled players, but they're smart enough not to give those players the same rewards as those who are skilled enough to meet the standard challenge. Those that do Catherine on Easy get the joy of completing the store, but are denied the endgame content - Bable. Same thing with DKCR - You can Super Guide your way through all the hard levels if you want, but you are denied the completion rewards for each level when you do and, as such, will never see the final, hidden world in the game.

They could have just taken he "tough shit" approach, I guess, and they mostly still did, but they didn't leave the other players out in the cold either. If you can't beat Catherine on Easy (and some people found that too hard, so they made and even easier setting, good job there, Japan), I'd say its just the wrong game for you.

I'm not good at racing games. Solution? I don't play them all that much. I don't ask the makers of GT5 to accomodate me for my inability to play them as well as other people do.

Well, in Halo's defense, you are a super-soldier who's suit is also packed with Biofoam for emergency self-medication of fairly serious injuries. And Sangheili are just naturally bad ass.

As far as CoD goes... eh. It's silly, but you gotta remember CoD is also very arcade in it's nature. Honestly I don't see how regenerating health is any more ridiculous (much less so honestly) than running around with infinite stamina, jumping off buildings all the while dual-wielding shotguns ....

At least you probably won't ever be able to knife people from 15+ feet away ever again. Commando is for all intents & purposes, never coming back.
