  • Re: What games are you currently playing?

Yeah the throwing knife is pretty wonky, but I still love it. Oh dear sweet GOD how I love stabbing people on MW2...

Traditionally I prefer to play a Sniper role in FPS, which is one of the reasons I miss Battlefield since the series has monstrously large maps giving snipers plenty of good camps. But so far Sniping just seems to suck balls in MW2 and I'm attributing a lot of the bullshit I experience in general to lag. It's almost enough to make me want to buy the game for PS3 instead (I'm only renting it atm) since I've yet to experience lag of any kind on PS3 with any game.

I don't know by what magic fairy dust Sony pulled out of their ass, but man PS3 > 360 no contest when it comes to lag. Well, MAG might just break that theory with the 256 player games but we'll see - from what I hear the beta is holding up nicely.

Back to MW2... yeah I love the knife. I'm rather pissed off though, because my pistol of choice is the Desert Eagle (another gun that probably isn't as strong as it ought to be, especially given the in-game model uses .50 AE rounds) because I just plain love 'em. But that means going for a pretty long ass time without the tactical knife is which is critical to a good knife build.

    The Riot Shield is also proving to be absolutely invaluable; I can just leave it on my back and I can take a lot more punishment than normally from the rear. Or I can do the bastard technique (which I've yet to perfect but I'm slowly getting better at it) of charging people with the shield running full speed and then throwing my knife. Or if I've lost it/don't want to chance it I'll just bash 'em with the shield twice. I'm not sure if I can bash them with the shield and still have time to stab or then throw my knife, seems too risky. I wasn't aware you could lunge with the damn thing though O.O;

My biggest dilemma atm (other than no tactical knife) is trying to figure out the best combination of perks. Marathon is kind of a no-brainer since I like to be constantly mobile. However, Ninja is also pretty damned tempting since it takes me off heartbeat sensors and with Pro reduces sounds by 3/4.

I'm using Lightweight at the moment largely for the challenge to unlock Pro for the bonus 5000 XP, but soon as that's done I'm switching to Hardline - at least until I get Cold Blooded.

The final slot is yet another headache; I'm not sure if Commando Pro is worth giving up for something like say Scrambler. For one thing, Scrambler will actually give away my position (sort of) and being able to shank someone from 5 feet away is crazy. I'm just not sure if there are any really good alternatives.

I really am starting to dig Knives too much...

I think Commando Pro is far too effective to be replaced, I don't know the amount of times I have actually rotated and stabbed someone because of it.

I tried out Marathon, but after about two games I missed my Sleight Of Hand Pro too much (I died at least twice due to standard reloading time and many times due to slower switch to Iron Sights) and swapped it back. Have either of you leveled Sleight Of Hand at all? The faster reload on assault rifles is crazy, especially at IV/V/VI... and the faster aiming is icing on a Delicious Cake.

I also tried out Bling... is it really worth it? Having FMJ and ACOG together was kinda nice, but as with Marathon I felt the pain without Sleight Of Hand.

As for knives... I have Throwing Knife unlocked but as I barely use even standard grenades I doubt I'll use it at all. As for the Mr. Stabby.... There's a reason why my profile is 'TimmyTheKnife' o.O I love knifing and getting knifed.

Edit: OH! I got Lv.30 (finally) and unlocked the Stinger.... I loooove it! I've also started to use the TAR-21, unlocking attachments for it etc. I'm kinda 50-50 between it and the M4A1, but it's kinda unfair atm as my M4A1 is pretty well maxed out but I'm just starting getting more marksman experience with the TAR-21.

Yeah and... this Penny Arcade strip. I'm adding an additional 'Grenade Launcher users are necrophiliacs'

Cold-Blooded and Ninja are great for staying undetected. Cold-Blooded is almost essential for sniping and counter-sniping. Ninja is good for nomadic players.

Bling can be great, and sometimes not, but it depends on what weapons you're using. For LMGs and shotguns, bling will allow you to equip the grip plus whatever else you would normally equip. For SMGs, you can equip the faster firing plus whatever else. For sniper rifles, thermal scope and silencer.

I never thought of riot shield + throwing knife. I think I'll go try that.

I couldn't get more than seven kills with the knife/shield combination. The throwing knife is pitifully inaccurate, and I'm not really sure where it's killing power comes from when you have to lob it like a grenade.

Also, I was off in my earlier analysis of the throwing knife. It does NOT bounce. Vidoes like these are only possible because of, what I'm guessing are, private custom servers on the PC.

The throwing knife is actually rather slow, has very poor distance, and will not bounce like that. You may be able to bank it off a wall, but I haven't tried that yet.

Regardless, it's still hella fun tossing a knife at a guy while he's reloading.

So, I've gotten better with the throwing knife. It's pretty good with the shield, but I've really started to notice that when I'm anywhere near the host of the match I lag. It's gotten to the point where after my first action against them, usually lunging with the shield, I'm frozen and only get glimpses of what's going on. The lunging attack does no damage, and if I do manage to get a second one off, it doesn't do any damage either. If I hit the host with a throwing knife, it doesn't do anything either. It only seems to be this bad when you're standing near them, but it really sucks. At one point I chased the host and hit them with my shield three times before I was shot from behind. Who knows how many times I would have actually hit that guy before he realized I was behind him?

Since I'm pointing out problems, I might as well continue. The maps were created by schizophrenic digital art majors. They completely removed any kind of skill or effort from this game when they allowed the players to not only see the location of the person who killed them, but spawn two meters away from them as well. Play in Hardcore mode, you say? Sure, I think I'd love to spend an entire game searching for campers, or camping and seeing absolutely nobody.

The only reason this game is so popular is because it's easy and requires absolutely no thought. The same thing goes for rap music, getting drunk, buying American cars, majoring in 'sports medicine', and Family Guy.

I don't have anything nice to say about Bad Company or DICE. They really disappointed me when they dropped support for BF2142. I guess they wanted to focus more on the console market, but they've thrown their name in the hat with a lot of other competitors. On the PC, they had a decent niche carved out.

So they nerf universal in-game chat for MW2, but they reveal the location of your killers anyway? I'm all for solutions to spawn camping, but this is a pretty dumb solution. Let the player pick his spawn point with acceptable bounds on a per map basis, don't just let them spawn next to the assailant. I can partly see why people were resorting to the lance glitch now. They could kill you, you could spawn near them and they could lance glitch to get you a second time.

Its no small wonder I've just given up on FPS multiplayer titles, its like they'll never get it right.

                      • Re: What games are you currently playing?

The kill cam is pretty cool, but honest to God it should either be a perk you have to pick, a death-streak (even better) or reserved solely for the last kill of the match.

I like MW2's gameplay for the most part, but Christ on a fucking bun all everyone does is camp and/or Akimbo the 1887 shotgun - a horrendously broken weapon. Imagine the stupid little hand cannons pirates used to use... now imagine them being able to frag someone from 20+ feet away and you have the 1887. It's completely retarded how far away people can blow you away with them.

The camping really needs to stop though. With the exception of players like myself who like to run around and knife people (or run and gun) everyone seems to just pick the most random little spot and camp, waiting to 1-shot people as they run by. It's really stupid and the fail-tastic Radar doesn't help either. I swear the only time I ever see an enemy on it is right before getting shot, and I don't see all that many people with Cold-Blooded.

More over, at least 85% of my deaths are from lucky/opportunistic bullshit. I can be running around with my tactical knife along with the Cold Blooded perk about to get the jump on somebody and 1 of 3 things will happen.

                        1) One of his team mates spots me and blows me away (this happens at a rather alarming frequency and from the most absurd vantage points)

                        2) Said jack ass will magically realize I'm either right behind them or about to enter the room they're in and quickly get in position to ambush me. This also happens far, far too frequently and I call bull crap. No heart beat sensor and yet they know I'm coming and pop me at the precise moment. Okay buddy...

                        3) Lag/Bizarre misses. Oh god WTF with the lag. I've seen people get away with so much crap that should have rightly gotten them killed. People knifing me through the front of the riot shield, lucky as all hell semtex throws... one guy even caught me after I flash banged him and snuck up on him with my knife. And I'm frequently finding myself mid-lunge and dieing, only to have the kill cam show that the shots were way off. SO HOW WAS I HIT THEN?!

I really don't know if the problem lies with the 360's horrible net code for most shooters, or if's console shooters in general but I'm getting sick of it.

I also recently discovered that when equipping the Riot Shield it slows you down to 80% normal speed... so I'm opting out for a Sniper Rifle instead since on some maps you get cammo for having it and 100% mobility. Why Snipers get full mobility is beyond me but w/e, it's not my game.

Eh it's OK. The story was pretty cliche, but at least it was also fairly lengthy and most of the cast (Rush started to get on my nerves after a while...) was likeable. What I loved most was the Battle System and the Music. Man the music is really, really freaking good in that game.

                            But the Union System was a great idea on SE's part. There are still some things they could tweak, but I'd like to see them try TLR's forumla again in a new game. The other stuff that seemed neat but didn't work out so well was;

                            - No leveling. I didn't really care for that aspect, with your stats just going up seemingly at random. Also if your Battle Rank goes up too fast it can make fights (especially bosses) much harder, despite the game encouraging you to do so. I made this mistake and had a very rough go of it soon after.

                            - Little control over skills learned. From time to time your guys will ask you what they should learn, but only the leaders do this and you have to advise them towards what path you want them to take rather than invest in specific skills. Not the end of the world, but I wasn't crazy about it either. For instance I made David a mystic fighter when it turns out his mystic side is rather weak despite being able to learn some unique mystic skills ><

                            - Equipment. OK, I can see why they chose to just have NPC's upgrade themselves, but it's still annoying. I'd rather have full control over everyone's gear then going out and hunting randomly for items and even after collecting the right things, hoping one my guys will ask me for the stuff/take it and upgrade.

And that's my nitpicking of the game. Despite those flaws, I enjoyed the game thoroughly although I didn't beat it lol. I rented it and returned it nearly a weak late lol as the game was surprisingly (and refreshingly) long.

So, I was wrong about the knife again. You CAN throw it that far, but it doesn't seem to be consistent.

Kicked it into Prestige mode, and now I wish I hadn't, but oh well. Got my throwing knife back, and I've been whooping ass pretty hard lately. Before Prestige, I managed to earn my own chopper gunner three times in a single day. That's a 300% increase from zero.
