eh to me any system, hand held or console older then a PS2, is fare game to the emulation monster that is my PC, so many great games I would have never played, if not for emulation, and fan translation patches.

Right now I am trying out Naughty Bear, borrowed it from work, also still playing Resistance FoM on PS3

Tried out the Valkryia Chronicles 2 demo for PSP, as it was up on PSN last night. Looks like a turn-based strategy game I might actually play and finish. I'm always good about getting halfway through such games and quitting.

Looks like another great game Sega won't do shit to market. All the marketing Sega and Sammy seem to put money into are Sonic, Yakuza and Blazblue.

Next game Sega won't market well:

Phantasy Star Portable 2.

And its a shame, because of all the Universe games, its actually the best one just based on what I played of the Japanese demo months ago. It makes the console/PC versions and the PSP version look like shit. Shame they don't bring back the mags, though, because I never use my Partner machines.

I don't like emulators unless they're legit - as in made by the company that made the games originally.

I can understand the piracy part, but I really don't get the emulator part.

Not a fan of finishing other people's work, basically. Emulators I've used in the past are just too finicky for my liking. Too much tweaking. Or maybe my PCs have just sucked.

That was back before we had virtual consoles, now I'm just content to wait for a legit version to emerge so I can support it, you know, rather than steal it.

I'm wondering how many layers of bullshit I'm going to have to sit through to hear you explain this statement. What I do know is that most people that are running homebrewed emulators on their PCs, iPhones and PSPs are not doing so to legitimately buy games.

I might be reading to much into it... lol but technically the emulators are not illegal (unless you are using a bios for a system you do not own, for the emulators that use a bios file anyway) It's the ROMs that are illegal if you do not have the original copy.

Heck GameStop and other store where even selling that one emulator for a while because it used its own custom PSX bios. (I forgot it's name -.-)

You do realize of course, BBQ, that ROM images don't just magically appear, right? They come from real copies of the game.

Which means two things:
One, that people have a way of connecting their own copies of games to their computers and dumping the image
Two, that the game has physical copies that people can buy

This is sort of like "most torrents have copyrighted contents" = "TORRENTS ARE ILLEGAL". It's just plain wrong.

Which is often scapegoated into the "backup" excuse. Yes, they ripped the game into ROM form, I know this. It still enables stealing once posted or made available to torrent.

That's not what people that rationalize ROMs say. They cite the lack of a retail or even used presence of a game as a reason to download the ROM and play it on an emulator. "The company does not care about my money or consumer demand, so I'm just going to help myself to what they neglect."

They don't care that a company like Nintendo of America's hands are tied when it comes to getting a Virtual Console release for Earthbound, they don't go on Amazon looking for it - they just steal it. And when they've made that compromise a number of times, eventually stealing games that are indeed available in retail is no problem for them.

At the end of the day, emulators are made to play pirated copies of games. They have no meaning other wise. Even without the bullets, the gun has a meaning and people feel threatened if you point it at them. If I see an emulator running on your PC, but no games on your shelves, what am I supposed to think? That you're Honest Abe?

If you want to toss out the "sampling" rationale or any other such nonsense, feel free.

Emulation in and of itself is not theft. Emulators are a tool. Whatever people choose to do with them, well, that's up to them.

At the end of the day, emulators are used to play games.

Anecdote: I use emulators to play General Chaos. I have both a Genesis and a copy of the game at my parents house. I play it on emulator because I don't live it home. Am I stealing?

A person with a gun isn't doing anything illegal. A person that goes to the shooting range isn't doing anything illegal. A person that shoots another person is doing something illegal. The gun is a tool.

If that's your reasoning, try harder.

Of all the systems you've just listed, most of them - with the possible exceptions of Game Gear, Saturn and 32X - most of them have games either in the digital marketplace (Wii VC, PSN, XBLA, Steam, iPhone Apps) or have seen rerelease in collections. Dreamcast games are making their way to PSN and XBLA.

I'm not playing PC Engine games on my Wii through magic. Hell, Neo Geo games are the most obscure of all and they're on Virtual Console and about to come to PSN. Sorry, its not the 1990s anymore, its 2010.

And lets not forget remakes. What was once old can be made new again.

Emulation in and of itself is not theft. Emulators are a tool. Whatever people choose to do with them, well, that's up to them.

And what are you going to do with an emulator without ROMs?

Go on, tell me. I'm anxious to know.

Are you going to code your own games to run on it? OK, fair enough.

Personally, I get tired of the sanctimonious bs that people spout when you bring up roms. Get over yourself, no one is an angel. There isn't a single adult person that can look in the mirror and honestly say they've never done anything illegal....yet they sure know how to stand on their soapboxes.
