Recently finished The Swapper on Vita. Pretty interesting puzzle platformer with a unique cloning game mechanic.

      Currently playing:

Finally broke my years-long Activision boycott to play some games I actually care about and want to support.

Destiny (PS4): I like this game, but don't love it. Shooting feels good, upgrades come reasonably fast, loot is good supply, boss fights are very fun. However, the main hub Tower feels awfully sterile, the storyline is poorly constructed, and the PvP is hit or miss.

Diablo 3 (PS4): Vastly improved from the PC version. Inventory management is a little more cumbersome than strictly necessary, but it's at least easy to organize and simple to mark stuff for salvage later. The loot is mostly fun, though I dislike the overly huge emphasis on weapon damage on weapons. There are only a certain number of ways an item can roll to be considered "usable", and those permutations all involve having a bonus to your primary stat and/or vitality, unless the item itself has some truly amazing rare/unique qualifier.

Still in shrink-wrap: The Last of Us Remastered and Wolfenstein: The New Order.

I was pretty sure I'm the only person on these forums still playing WoW - we had a thread about it a while back but people haven't touched it in forever so I assumed they all stopped playing.

Still playing WoW very casually, because the school semester is taking up the bulk of my time. I managed to play for about an hour yesterday before classes. Working on my Rogue (level 81 now) for the Quintessential Quintet and I need to bust it out before the patch because when the pre-Mists patch hit, none of those "reach max level on x characters" achievements worked until you actually hit 90. So I'm assuming they're going to bump up to 100 and then I'm going to have 19 levels instead of 9 to get on that character to flag the achievement and I don't want that. So I've been playing my Rogue every spare chance I get. Hoping to finish all of my reading today/tomorrow so I can spend some time with her on Sunday. Cata levels are pretty easy to get through though.

Haven't touched another game in months. Lack of funds - and desire, really - have enforced that decision.

So the return to vana'diel campaign is going, and there are very heavy discounts on both the regular and ultimate collections... which is insanely tempting, but Destiny is just kicking into full gear now with PvP and Raid events lined up until next month >_<

Still, part of me really wants to pop back on for the sake of nostalgia and to try the new jobs.

In the time since quitting to fill the void(after using GameFly to catch on like 6 years' worth of games I missed due to XI, lol), I now play competitive fighting games. Mostly Street Fighter IV and BlazBlue, I do a lot of local tournaments and fly out to Vegas for EVO every year; I also stream a lot of the Chicago area tournaments and this past year got to be one of the channels for UFGT(a major tournament in Chicago). Was pretty cool, had a few thousand people watching, got to interview the creator of Mortal Kombat on my stream and so on.

Currently trying to get through the giant punk rock festival for the next 3 days with all my limbs and back intact so I can start grinding on Dynasty Warriors Gundam Reborn.

Lack of desire is actually what kills my returns to WoW funnily enough (that and the invasion of the free Lv90''s when I was playing making the game a nightmare). That and the combat in newer MMOs is something I find a lot more fun in general now. Tera, GW2, Wildstar and ES have some very fun combat systems working in real time where you need to be actively dodging and blocking moves, and moving around. Contrast WoW, FFXI, SWTOR, Rift, ArcheAge etc and you are pretty much always static unless you need to move out of the fire.

I do like FFXIV's take on what is getting to be a pretty outdated combat system now, since you do have to be mobile and ready to react to things. That said, my main peeve about FFXIV has to be that class roles are too rigid, and the game forces you to be mobile, but two classes crash in effectiveness as soon as you go mobile. As much as I hated the talent tree system in a lot of MMOs (due to it giving no real choice thanks to there always being one single bes cookie cutter build), at least it allowed some role flexibility.

Honestly killing talent trees was the best thing to happen to WoW. You can actually pick up the abilities you want to use, and not take what you have to use, and maybe have one or two points to put into some filler ability. All of the talents that are pretty much compulsory for your spec are all passives, or get built into the ability itself when you switch into the spec.

I agree about the talent tree. It's also just so much simpler to manage.

I managed to get my little Rogueling to 85 this weekend. Fuck man Cataclysm goes by so fast and then I'm going to have to go to the slow drudgery that is the Mists leveling experience, and heirlooms only go up to 85.

PTR went up last week so I figure I have at least three weeks (from last Tuesday) to level, then again, what do I know? They never give out the patch dates, which sucks because I need to plan my life around these things dammit.

Yeah I love my Mage and my Rogue. I'm just finding it tricky to justify another MMO subscription though even if WoW has always been one of the cheap ones. With the frequency of content updates for FFXIV, it is really hard to justify plopping down another sub with all of the good free MMOs out there. It's less me being cheap, and more that MMO devs know that players can afford to be picky, and need to give yu a justification to subscribe.

I always highlight Tera and Rift as free to play done right and they are. Both give very nice bonuses for subbing. Free mounts, generous XP boosts, and cool vanity items, but they don't restrict what content you can do just for being free to play. As for F2P without sub options: The Secret World has really cool vanity items, and very fun bonus missions. Warframe is updated often and lets you just buy weapons and frames if you don't want to wait on the RNG. Mabnohgi is a fun little game and runs on most systems.

Don't get me wrong, I like WoW, I really do. It's just compared to the competitors, a subscription to WoW just seems less and less like good value for money to me. Obviously it's hard to put an exact value on enjoyment, so if you enjoy WoW, more power to you. I say go for it.

Couldn't agree more on the criticism of the class structure - I hate the current incarnation of the armory system. At least in 1.23 we could actually use traits from other classes. The over-simplified 3-class archetype they use for the DF is just crap, plus I still don't understand why BRD's LB is healing like wtf?! How about an actual support category, and let BRD have that (or even better each job having it's own individual LBs but they probably don't want to do that). I would much rather they just scrap the whole fucking thing, take XI's and improve on it because XI *still* has the best system of any game save FFT. For all it's flaws it at least has a masterfully designed job system.

There is some good news though, Yoshida was asked about making any changes and while he said there's nothing dramatic on the way (he didn't rule out the possibility though for the future!) the level cap increase with the expansion won't follow the norm - so I'm thinking we're going to see more abilities than we're used to, maybe even Job Traits if we're lucky. Details will be given to us at fan fest.

The one thing I do miss about FFXI was the subjob system, that shit was fucking beast.

But I always wanted an ability that would let you combine the two-hours of your main and subjob. RDM/BLM? Manaspell! PLD/NIN? InvinciGaukre! lol Put it on a 3 day cooldown or something so it's not OP as fuck and let people go to town on the super hard shit like AV back before, like when he was unbeatable.

I'd just like to see it revamped for XIV, because in XIV you don't have the crappy skill system holding you back - You'd still be limited in terms of subjob level, but at least if you ran something like SAM/BLM you could still magic burst at full power relative to your level off your own skill chains.

Speaking of which I really do miss SC + MB

As dated and simplistic as XI's combat was, it still feels strangely more in-depth than XIV's. I swear XIV is even MORE Auto-pilot mind-numbing than XI.

I'm having more fun than I feel like I should be with the 3DS Mii Plaza games. I finally completed Find Mii. Monster Manor is currently my favorite title. I'm liking Flower Town more than I thought I would. (It's basically Pokémon without the battle parts, which is . . . acceptable.)

I meant in terms of the variety of abilities and traits, not to mention job design - I'd take XI's SMN over XIV"s any day (minus perp cost). ACN would have been the perfect base model for RDM if they hadn't made it a pet class. YP was asked about this too, as there's a huge thread ranting about how crappy SMN & BRD were designed in ARR but he simply said that he feels too heavy a focus on pets would go against the casual nature of the game and be too micro-intensive.

You know, because screw having one of the most iconic classes of the series play the way it should, or that we have just 1 job out of the bunch that requires a good chunk of micro-management of a pet. I would love it if they'd just scrap ACN and start all over. Make that bar that appears when you call a summon part of your default hotbar commands and then have extra commands unique to each summon pop up. Let RDM & SCH share their own base class like they should have from the beginning.

As for what I'm playing now? Destiny just launched it's 1st Raid today and I can't wait to jump in - gotta head to the gym at some point today as well though
